Strange Torque steer problem

Featured Replies

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this:

Ive got a Fabia RS.. revoed to about 185bhp+300lb/ft (plus mods;))

ive also got eibach springs and dampers that have been on the car for a year.

Recently, the car has started suffering from torque steer-like symptoms. that it never had before, even on the motorway, in 6th, if you accellerate, the car will begin to pull over to the left.. the more throttle, the more it pulls... usually accompianed by a judder on the steering wheel (depending on speed)

at first i thought it was the dogbone mount, as it seemed to be a bit weak... ive changed it and its made no difference.

i also had a full 4wa alignment done on the car.. and apart from the toe (which was corrected) there wasnt much else wrong.

the bushes have all been visually inspected and seem ok too.

anyone know what it could be? im running out of cheap ideas :o

thanx

"So much torque it twisted the chassis"

Tyre Pressures.

Tyre type - tread pattern, have you bought new ones lately?

Hey...too few big mac's...it was always there, now your lighter in a malteeser way it pulls more...

ok well how else was I aquaplaning at 40mph last night in 2nd :D Oh yeah dry track day tyres....oops, don't half make some spray mind.

Maybe tracking Col in all honesty. Brunters is evil for yanking at your wheels...might be worth a shot ;)

Failing that let somebody else drive it? Torque steer..hang on you got power steering, hold onto the wheel man :D

You may have a dodgy joint in your shaft big boy.

Colin has had,

Tyre pressures checked

Wheels swapped around

A new CV joint

Lower engine mount replaced

Four wheel alignment

All work carried out by a profesional.

Tracking was done and corrected with 4WA.

i had to swap front/back wheels over as front passenger side was rather fooked.. and problem was there before trackday.

pressures have all been checked and messed with..

thing is its not torque steer as such, as it doesnt pull on the wheel.

Hmm - puts a different angle to 'had him in the twisties ;) '

Seriously though - how much was yours running again Lummox ?

Last rolling roaded at 200 bhp and 340lbft, that was before 160 intake and green filter though.

Have you had brakes checked.I'm a "mechanical goon know nothing" but from experience know,as will most, pulling one way or the other equals brakes rubbing and judder equals warped disks.just what springs to mind, like i said i know nowt about mechanics :o

Brakes are also new :)

Upper engine mount?? Allowing engine to twist??

My son had this problem in a big way with his 205 1.9GTI. Everything appeared to be OK but the problem was eventually traced to worn bushes in the front suspension.

I'm always amazed it didnt have a FMIC on that though, would imagine the heatsoak would be terrible. Ah well :D - I cant afford FMIC yet anyway :(

This is what i am thinking... altho the bushes look ok on inspection, and shouldnt be worn in under 2 years..

It would explain the vaugeness and general sloppy handling when chucking it about tho.

problem i have, is bushes is a big job to do, and ill have to pay for it to be done... so would like to be sure :(

Wasnt available over a year ago. And the Fabia wasnt as popular as it hadnt been out long so companies werent ready to make a prototype.

Bushes are cracked on mine too - was an advisory on last MOT. Seriously should be thinking of replacing them whilst the car is up in the air...

Always a good mod anyway. Tightens up the front end quite nicely.

I can only assume that the amount of torque you are running is having an effect on the Fabia's odd length drive shafts i.e. more power through the shorter shaft. Can't think of anything else.

Could be it - surprised it would be this noticable though ?

Dont think it is due to the odd length driveshafts... as its only just sort of developed... ive had revo for well over a year and its always been fine until recently.

no longer 2ft high!!! now soo low i've broken my sump :o

must remember to raise it a bit

bengie - you gonna fit a metal sumpguard? Somehow I have a feeling you might prefer that in the long run over putting the height up again :D

Col, checked your wheel bearings? Mine had "variable geometry" in that the wheel base was moving as the wheel had front to rear movement.

Also, wishbone bushes may need replacing, that will have an impact.
