LED bulbs in the fogs

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried putting LED's in the fogs on the Octy III? I haven't received my car yet, and I'm not even sure what bulb type it is. But I will most definitely try it when I get the car. I presume it will need resistors though, to avoid error warnings...

For me the main benefits of LED's are their aesthetics.

LED's in the fog lights are therefore a little pointless as here in the UK you are not allowed to drive with fog lights on unless it is foggy.

I'm guessing that since all the major manufacturers choose to use incandescent bulbs instead of LED's for the front fogs they are better in foggy conditions?

A yellow tint is better in foggy conditions. Despite this, and the fact that I think fog lights rarely have a practical function, I want to substitute the incandescent bulbs with LED's. Furthermore, it's legal to use your fogs in daytime conditions with your headlights off in Norway. I presume that's the case in the UK as well as this is a EU regulative.

Anyway... It appears that no one have tried this swap, but maybe someone can answer yes or no to whether it's possible to drive with the daytime running lights (cars with bi-xenon and LED) with the fogs on in the new Octy? Furthermore, what bulb type is it in the fogs? H11?

No, it's illegal to use fog lights at all here unless visibility is less that 100yards. (Pretty sure it's 100 yards.... Anyway it needs to be pretty bad)

I stand corrected if I'm wrong.

As far as I know it's only legal to use fog lamps with reduced intensity (not full intensity) as DRL . In EU that is. Could be different in Norway as you say.

I checked the latest owners manual for the MkIII Octavia and it makes no mention of any of the bulb types?

Unlike the MkII manual which usefully listed all of the different bulb types.

No, it's not legal in Norway. I think it was legal way back, but the fog light/no headlight combo has been illegal for many years now.

You're wrong, quote from the Norwegian Public roads administration:

"Tåkelys

Det er ikke tillatt å ha flere enn 2 tåkelys.

Det er ikke tillatt å bruke tåkelys i kombinasjon med nærlys.

Det er tillatt å bruke tåkelys som kjørelys i stedet for nærlys på dagtid.

Det er i utgangspunktet ikke tillatt å bruke tåkelys i kombinasjon med fjernlys. Unntaket er kurvekjøring i lav hastighet (10-20 km/t).

"

In English it basically says that it's allowed to use fog lights as DRLs during day time.

Anyone know what bulb type that are used in the foglights?

Hi has two per side... I think they are HB4? I will check tomorrow..

I can't understand why they just didn't put the drls where the fogs are like the mkll

Tell that to the amazing number of younger brainless morons who think it looks great to dazzle everyone by having them on all the time !!!!

I suspect it's because people think you've got your fog lights on and flash their lights at you.

Seriously? You get dazzled by foglights? For your enlightenment(!): The reason why fog lights aren't allowed during night time is not because it dazzles oncoming traffic. Rather, it's the potential of reducing the night vision of the driver that has the fog lights on. More light closer to the car will drastically reduce the human eye's capabilities of  seeing objects in the distance at night.

Most likely, your instrument panel will impair your night vision more than an oncoming car with only fog lights on. On the other hand, retards with aftermarket xenons in their fogs will dazzle everyone.

On the Octy 3? Are you sure you're not thinking of the O2 FL?

On my vRS, I have two per side - struggling to get one out at the moment though!  It's in the hole a bit tightly and it's rather wet outside :-(

Yep, I definitely have an Octy 3 too!

Ah - I see. Well, I guess the fogs on the VRS are different, as I'm quite sure there are only one bulb per side on the standard version. Don't get too wet though :-D

do the octy 3 headlghts or foglights come on when u unlock the car at night?

Headlights yes

wasnt sure as some cars its the fogs, would be another reason people may want to change to LEDs. thanks :)

Today I took the time to investigate what bulb type that goes into the fogs. For anyone who's interested, it's H8
