1980's touring cars

How many of you remember the 1980's touring cars, John Cleland, Tim Harvey and the likes, Sierra Cosworths, Peugeot 406 (a bit later) Vauxhall Vectra, Honda Accord and the BMW M3 not forgetting Nissans Primera.

Well, at the Gold Cup on bank holiday weekend the guys were invited to race at the Gold Cup, so for the older ones amongst us, here a few proper cars with a lot less electronics than we have now!

My earliest BTCC memory would be the Volvo 850 estate era, so probably early 90s?

I remember all the fuss when Volvo were considering entering an estate, and had been watching for a few years then.

Alfas. Nissan Primeras and so on.

Great stuff!

I was trying to get a shot of the Labatts Sierra spitting flames but the closest I got was in second from last picture you can see the smoke!

I went because I have a few friends who were competing, Barry Sewell in the lotus 41 F3 (or formula junior) Andy Jarvis in F2 and Dennis Welch in the big Healey 3000, HSCC is a good series to follow.

I go back to Andy Rouse in a Sierra

I can just about remember this- memories abound of Smokin Joe in the BMW, Tiff Needell in a Primera, Hoy in a Carina, Radisich in a Mondeo and Cleland in a Cavalier.

Saturday lunchtimes were pretty good IMHO!

God, I remember that, man I'm old :giggle:

I remember John Cleland driving this bad boy, I liked that car so much I had the photo blown up to this size.

I know John Cleland well and have bought a few cars from his dealership in the past.

When he first came to Peebles he was a Colt dealer (this marque later became Mitsibusi) and he rallied a Colt Lancer. He then took on and Opel dealership - his father, Bill, became team Principle of Dealer Opel Team and John did BTCC in and Ascona. Dealership later became Vauxhall and he raced Cavaliers then Vectra's. Bill was still head of DTV.

He later moved from Peebles to Galashiles and opened as a Volvo dealer and raced with them for a short time before retiring from the sport. He still has the Volvo franchise which he runs along side Jaguar. His son, Nicky, raced karts for a while but don't think he still races.

I've got a BTCC programme dated 13th/14th Oct 2007, rounds 28/29/30, the last races of the season, and it has Jamie Cleland entered by Cleland Motorsport, racing in the ELF Renault Clio Cup at Thruxton.(Not as good as his Dad). The battle for the Touring Car  tiitle was between Fabrizio Giovanardi (Vectra) & Jason Plato (SEAT Leon).

Cavaliers and Sierras...

I can go a bit further back than that.

How about Jaguar XJS, Rover SDi, BMW 635CSi and 2.8 Capri's.

1970's and these were very first sight of motor racing in real life.

My dad took me to Silverstone and we stood on the banking on the outside of Woodcote.

Oh those were the days ;)

John was happy to speak to people in the paddock and I also spotted him signing programmes and having his photo taken with the admiring fans.

He must run a vauxhall dealership as his trailer was all logo'd with the dealership name.

He isn't the only one, if you go to Dolgellau in Wales, you can buy a Ford off Gwyndaf Evans and while you are there you can drool allover his rally Escorts.

H*11 yeah!!!

I go back to those days too. I did miss out on the Cologne Capris and the Mustangs (also illustrated, thanks) though.
