Uprated timing belt?

Featured Replies

Is there such a thing?

The teeth on the Dayco one on my car seems to have delaminated or something. Its only 3k miles old!

About a 3" strip where there are teeth missing. Lucky i caught it really!!

Take it back to whoever fitted the belt. Were the tensioners etc replaced or just the belt? The belt might not be at fault, but was not fitted correctly.

There isn't an 'uprated' belt as such, just go for a good quality complete kit.

Just buy a genuine one or a gates automaster one, they tend not to fall apart unlike the cheapy dayco or conti ones.

can you post up a picture of the belt?

Initially a friend of mine fited the belt, then after a few issues it wad re-timed at darkside along with a new tensioner.

I am thinking it was damaged when initially fitted if anytime, as the tensioner was also damaged hence replacing it.

Any recommendations as to a new kit?

Ill see if i can get my camera in :)

Teeth missing from the belt is a very bad thing indeed, are you quite sure that there hasn't been an interference issue?

Was going to suggest ~Gates as well, i think they stand over the engine if the belt breaks in a certain time.

I put a gates kit on with water pump for £102. Probably gates who make the kits for vag anyway

I have used genuine ones with no trouble at my level of power.  I am not aware of uprated ones, but I would say anything "genuine" is uprated to most pattern parts from Eurocarparts and similar (in my view only)

I assumed that most people would not have an issue. But as a general rule i like to upgrade rather than replace like for like :p

I know many tuning companies run standard belts so im not assuming its my power/torque level.

Ive asked for a gates kit :)

I know gates do a 'racing' timing belt for a 1.8T. It's blue and looks cool :)

Perhaps they make one for a 1.9 tdi too?

dayco are now oe on a lot of vw,s

get it changed then send pictures to dayco uk

nothing else looks damaged which is a good thing. just wondering what could have caused it.

Such damage is usually caused by oil or solvent contamination which softens the rubber, are you absolutely certain that the cam timing hasn't slipped?

i had an issue with it not starting. this was rectified by the moving the cam sprocket literally a fraction. this belt problem occured afterwards.

If this happened while the engine was running, did the engine stop as a result?

nope. i felt a small judder with the engine. got out, couldnt hear any knocking or anything unusual.

turned off the engine, had a quick peek around, tried to restart and it just turned over like before. too timing cover off and voila! teeth missing

Ok, fingers crossed that you haven't slightly bent a valve or two, good luck.

It turns fine by hand. Fingers crossed (y)

And thanks, im gonna need it aha

Christ almighty that's savage, you were lucky it didn't go pop tbh...

the thing with timing belts is that they are made from 2 seperate components, the teeth are made from a nitrile rubber compound, and the outer part is normally Kevlar. And the 2 pieces are bonded together. I have seen belts strip teeth like that before but it normally has in underlying cause, either a tensioner siezing (a toothed one) or also I've seen engines which haven't run for a long time with the bottom half of the timing belt cover full of water which leaked out the pump and the water seperates the bonding glue from the Kevlar backing...

with out inspecting the belt it's hard to say what would cause it, but I would definitely send it back to dayco so at least they can examine the belt.

**** me! Lucky you caught that, could have been a £ot £ot worse.

Needless to say, don't drive it anywhere until it's had a new cambelt. Another inch or two and it probably will slip.
