  • U can drive like a saint, or like a getaway bankrobber, end of the day, if ur tyres pressures r off & the wheel alignment wrong - u get horrible mileage, regardless of the brand.

My contis hit 3mm at 7K miles. I have thrashed the car to be fair. To get 31K out of them i'd need to topping out at 40 everywhere!

So, is if fair to say from this thread that the SC5s are worth a look? Does anyone know what the new Audi S3 comes with?

Thank god it's not just me that ends up more confused then!

I know I don't do a massive mileage, but I'll soon be the only Blackline owner around here still running the original tyres at this rate. I'll have to get my little measuring stick out to them tomorrow, but they don't look too bad (that said they've only done 7k).

I bet you only have 4mm on the fronts.

From checking today I have to ask if you were round my house measuring the depth last night? O/S is just over 4mm but the N/S is just under, so not very impressive really.

Best start looking at potential replacements as they'll need swapping before the really bad weather comes - although I don't bother with winter tyres I refuse to struggle through slush & snow with worn summers on.

LOL no im not stalking I just new that the tyre wear would be the same. Its the Conti's they are soft. Don't know how the guy above made them last so long its nothing to do with driving style my gear changes and approaches to junctions and launches are silky smooth.

If you continue with that wear rate you wont be far off 12000 miles by the legal limit. 7-8 mm on a new tyre 7000 wearing 3/4mm off so another 5000 for another 3/4mm sorted. mine have worn out just at the right time as the weather is getting worse would not fancy driving in heavy rain and snow with only a few mm left though.

So - is it still the Diesel's that are eating through the Conti tyres then?

Not everyone puts what they have in their profile - just wonder if we've found a petrol one yet that has eaten through the SC2's at a fast rate.

Checked mine earlier today. I'm down to 2.0mm (hence the reason I'm replacing them) however that's after 31k on the rear and now 12k on the front.

Just checked my fronts and currently at 5.5mm after almost 10k. Conti sport contact 5

Mine came with Dunlop RT Maxx's, I got 36000 miles out of them I have just replaced them with 3mm left all round (I swapped front for rears at about 20K) I have replaced them with the Dunlop GT Maxx's as they seemed to have a decent review when fitted to the VRS from Black Circles reviews...so far so good, they are a bit quitter than the RT's, the car seems to vibrate more than it used to but that might just be the new tyres showing up how badly buckled the alloys are thanks to the state of the roads   :'(

That's why I tend use the tyre test reviews collated at http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/. NOT the reviews from the public, but those from motoring bodies and magazines.

I just had my car's (Blackline estate) first annual service, was told the fronts are 80% worn, after 9.5k miles. Contis, as you'll probably have guessed :-)

I'm trying to decide what to replace them with. Thinking of the Goodyear F1 asymmetrics (Camskill currently selling them for just under £100), seem to be good in wet and reasonably quiet, and bit harder wearing than Contis. Anyone here with experience of these ?

Surely we should be able to get some money back from the Conti 2's as they seam to break the sale of goods act. I would say that general consensus is that they wear far to quickly and i'd even go as far as to say the ones they supply skoda are probably less durable than the ones they sell publicly. A bit like when you get a new printer from HP or Epson and the cartridges are only half full. Im not saying they are dangerous and ultimately its driver responsibility to check tyre wear on a frequent basis. But im sure longevity is a feature of the sale of goods act and it may be vague but goods have a perceived life span especially when comparing against other brands. I wonder how many Blackline owners are affected and if an email full of signatures is justified to skoda hq. Or am i overreacting, is getting to the wear indicator before 10k miles acceptable?

I'm torn between Falken 912's (my tyre local stockist has them) or Nexen N6000's for my wifes car. I had the Nexens on my old car and they certainly did the mileage (27k). Both about the same price any Opinions?

I have nexens n8000 on the scout  and my daughters fiesta, and they come with a free damage and puncture insurance, which has been used on the fiesta.

9k from my SC2 on a TSi VRS. 3mm left on the fronts so will be swapped on the next week or two.

The rears look brand new but as I don't like having odd tyres on the front and back, all four are being swapped. Might try to sell the rears on eBay.

Glad I can source tyres at cost, £72 for Michelin PR3.

Well after trying to find some replacement Falken Ziex 912's for my VRS i have found that these have been replaced by 914's which oddly have less favourable reviews and are working out £100 more than what i paid for my 4 X 912's in 2010.

So i have decided to try something else and after careful deliberation gone for Avon ZZ3's @ 54 Each + VAT.

Does anyone else have these fitted? I will post my findings as soon as i have had chance to do some spirited driving :bandit: . Although they have a V groove pattern which look good but from memory don't clear snow very well so might be a PITA come winter. One thing for sure they can't be as bad as the Conti's that came with my Blackline which are down to the wear indicator already after 10k steady miles 1 year of ownership. :swear: .

Yes, ZZ3's were the last tyres I had fitted to my vRS before I sold it, and in my experience were the best (although I couldn't judge long-term wear), with low noise, great handling and good wet road stopping. I peferred them to Conti SC2's (which were the original OEM's), but haven't tried the newer SC5's so can't make a realistic comparison. Inbetween I also had some Uniroyal Rainsport 2's which I also thought were very good, but not as good as the ZZ3's (they also seemed to wear quite quickly).

Im quickly coming to the same opinion. Only just been for a quick spin because i had the wheels sprayed back while the rubber was off which delayed the road test but first impressions are excellent much better road holding and wet weather grip over the sc2's and possibly a bit better than the falkens.

I doubt you'd have a prayer of claiming under the Sale of Goods Act for a wear and tear item like a tyre, unless you had a blowout due to an obvious fault

No disrespect, but every tyre kicker in creation would be screwing the @rse off their tyres, wearing them out in 3-4000 miles, then claiming they're not fit for purpose

All you can do is vote with your feet and not buy them again

What about if you have the data saved from the OBDII port overlaid on Google maps using torque pro or similar. That would prove safe driving it could include pitch, roll, Lateral G in the corners speed revs everything. Likewise the black boxes insurance companies are now fitting? Its food for thought. It would be no good for me I hardly drive like a saint. That said I can drive efficiently so I never had any lock ups or wheel spins in the dry which are the main abrasive reasons for excessive tyre wear. You can't vote with your feet if the manufacturers don't give you a tyre choice. This might be a more useful option in the list.although they would have to give you honest specs so you can make an informed choice.

22k on my OEM Conti SC3's, down to 2mm on fronts & 5mm on rears. Mine's a diesel DSG, mostly motorway miles but I'm pretty happy with that.

About to get SC5's fitted so will report back...

Even if I take the wife's car in at the same time as mine, we still don't have enough wheels to fit all of those!

You missed the Falken Zeis 912's which were the best allround value tyre for the Vrs.

Had 4 wheel alignment done on the red car after initial saw toothing on the back wheels and have our own air line with calibrated pressure readout. I don't rely on the pressure warning light and check the tyre pressures at lease once every two weeks. But to be fair to the conti's & falkens they haven't changed in pressure since we have had them aside from i got a leaky valve on the front right of the falkens on the red one just before i changed to these avon's. trust me im way more diligent than most and the Conti 2's are just a bad egg. I will reserve judgement on the CS5's but i probably wont ever try them as the CS2's leave such a bad taste in the mouth (metaphorically speaking, im not a tyre licker :bandit: )

The F1 Asymmetric 2 has just won the Evo Summer Tyre test (mind that was a couple of months ago and I've only just got round to reading it) the Conti SC5 came joint 4th in the test.

I'm down to 3mm on the front SC2s on my Petrol vRS at 18K miles - so not too bad.

I use Hankook tyres myself as I get a good deal due to the amount of Hankook tyres we buy for the trucks, I currently have V12 Evo's and find them excellent have 10k miles up on them already and there only about 50% gone. I had Pirelli PZero's and Goodyear Eagle F1s before and find the Hankook a better all rounder. They are as good as the above for grip but seem to be lasting longer as well.

I would stay away from Kumho's they came on 2 new vans we bought this year with the other 2 coming with Conti's 35k km is what we got on the Kumho's where the Continentals have still plenty of life left at that, looking at the tyres on the two vans you would think the Kumhos had twice the mileage on them not the same as the Conti's. Still find the Hankooks last way longer on the vans too as long as you track them regularly.

Could you recommend a fellow Irish Briskodian to your tyre supplier ??  I love Hankook tyres but they have got a bit pricey on the websites that I normally use. He could see me 3 times a year with the mileage that I clock up!!
