First Sign Of Clutch Slip

Featured Replies

I was hoping this day would not come so soon however...

I bought the car 4 months ago at 84k and immediately had it remapped in Stockport by Rick at Unicorn deveopment. A sensible 165bhp (not sure of torque) but we agreed to start slow to preservce life of all the parts.

Drive it sensibly 80% of the time.

But never rag from cold, or launch or boot under 2.5k revs etc.. etc..

This morning coming onto the motorway, I had to floor it in 4th/5th in order to get in safely on a merging lane.

As i did so the revs started to go up at  different rate that the accleration.

It has not done it since even though I have actively tryed to make it happen again.

Done all the tests and seems fine.

On one hand im annoyed i was warned this would happen with a remap, so im sturggling between was it my fault or was it because the car has done quite a few miles.

And finally, if I change the clutch will it just happen over and over again... bought a diesel to save money not replacing parts.

My friend works at eurocar parts and can get a decent discount on a sachs cluth so if worst comes to worst ill go down that route.

Any sympathy advice wouldnt go a miss :bandit:

That's the trouble when you start to upgrade parts, others become less effective or wear quicker due to the increase in power, or simply can't cope with the change. No blame to be placed here IMO.

If you are going to replace the clutch anyway, I would look at a better than standard one as is will wear aagain, depending on how you continue to drive.

Mine started doing the same 3 years ago when I had it mapped at 86k.

It would slip occasionally, then a bit more often. A hard start would usually take a slight glaze off the surface of the clutch and all would be well again.

I learnt to drive around it by feeding the power in etc.

It's only now at 120k that it's got to the point that I'm changing it.

How old was your clutch when you got the remap?

And what is it on now?

My car is a 2003, so it would have been 7 years old at 86k in 2010.

It's now 10 years old at 120k and I'm changing it next week.

Don't worry about it until it does it more often. Then when it does, just stick a good standard clutch in it and don't drive in 6th everywhere, use the revs.

I think it'll go on for years yet anyway, it's got a good map on so I wouldn't panic yet.

Darkside have sent me an email to say this will do the job www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/sachs-1-9-tdi-6-speed-02m-dual-mass-flywheel-and-clutch-kit.html

How does this differ fron the original?

Cheers... can we split the cost ;)

Thats a standard clutch and flywheel, same as original.

They just emailed and said...

This will be more than enough for what you need

Bizarre

It will. Unless you're planning more power mods then just replace with a standard item.

Fair enough. Just get the impression that everyone one here thinks the standard one is useless.

Ill be scared to put my foot down with a new standard one in fear that it goes again lol !

Unless you're planning on doing lots of santa pod launches or burnouts then a good standard clutch is plenty for a nice smooth map like sharks. More than anything it's driving style that will kill a clutch.

Why did it slip after 4k miles on a map after 84k fine.

Seems ridiculous it would go after so soon. I drive it hard only rarely get nowhere near redline. How should I drive it. Always had petrols

Just luck of the draw I guess. Some guys on here have done 100k on a stock clutch with 80k being mapped. The main things I avoid to look after the clutch are not booting it below 2,000rpm in higher gears and not launching it of the lights too hard. Taking it up to the redline won't hurt the clutch/dmf but trying to floor it at 1500rpm in 6th will.

You could uprate the clutch but that'll be north of £600. Personally for everyday use I'd stick with a standard one.

Sorry to hijack,

But are you saying that a new standard clutch would be an ok replacement for a vRS that has had/will have a Shark map?

Just asking because I'm getting mine mapped at Shark soon. My clutch is fine at the moment but if I can be prepared for worst case scenario and put money aside for a new clutch, should I need it, I think it would be a wise move.

Yes, unless you're going down stage 2 route, their map for a Fabia vRS is designed for standard components.

The standard clutch should easily be able to handle that kind of power.

It's that sort of age/mileage I guess when the clutch would need replacing anyway even if you hadn't mapped it.

How much is a clutch fitted?

My std clutch was around 100k old and was good till I had a shark map on it. Soon as it was on the clutch slipped when booting it so I didnt go mad as it was only a daily and I didnt want to shell out till I was sure.

I changed it as over time it got worse and started slipping while there was me n wife in car soon as you moved to overtake which i deemed a tad not nice so had to be done.

Check another thread on my initial choice of clutch.

Am now back to a totally std clutch and its like a new car. Despite said company saying it wont last long. Only time will tell.

Std all the way from me mate amd even if it only lasts 50k its worth the saving as they are half the price Ish.

Gl mate

Fabia   estate  1.9  comfort 167k standard car as soon as I went to blacksmoke  map ok but now getting colder the slip mild to moderate as the car gets older  100 bhp to 140 lots of diffrence

would it be hard to fit your own clutch kit of mr clutch or some on like that?
