A question of cleanliness

Featured Replies

Hope nobody minds me resurrecting a thread that's a couple of years old elsewhere.

I have promised myself (no one else, of course :giggle: ) that I will keep the inside of my new Yeti somewhat cleaner than the Passat I had for so long.

I'm looking for a cordless re-chargeable vacuum cleaner for the interior of the car (something that gets into the Yeti's nooks and crannies) that I can hang on the inside wall of the garage and leave on-charge until I need it.

Any suggestions from experience?

Cheers, PB

The only thing I can think of that's close to what you're looking for is that Dyson cordless handheld.

They are brilliant just a bit pricey!!!

I like them too, but as you say, they are not cheap. :(

Aren't the Dyson's "big"? I thought that they'd be too large to fit in the nooks and crannies around the front seats?

I know that you suggested a cordless rechargeable but if you're willing to consider a bombproof corded cheap option, I have the last version of this Draper handheld, which is very effective. Some brush attachments are included and there is a simple cloth dust filter that is easy to clean. Under £30 from Fleabay. The only drawback (unless the cordless/rechargeable angle is a necessity for you) is that it is loud. And I mean jet engine loud :giggle:

I've put a new cordless vac on my xmas list!.

So far it looks as if it will be the dyson, or black & decker flexi vac. The latter has a hose which will make it easier for reaching under seats etc, and gets a good rating from Which.

(To cheesy tune)"You do the Flexi vac and put the freshness back......"

Apologies. 'Must go to bed now.

Thanks for all that - I'll have a look at both the Dyson (DC34?) and the Black & Decker (Pd1800el-GB) while I'm out to day. Not something I'd consider buying without seeing - and holding - in the flesh! There seems to be a wide range of cordless B&Ds, so it might prove cheaper than I anticipated.

Bit concerned about fastestlouigie's comment about the Dyson not being too capable around the front seats: that's where so much crud can accumulate over time!PB

I went the other route.

The Hoover the wife has been using inside, broke a belt and the handle fell off. Couldn't get spares so bought her a new one.

The old one is now for doing the cars as the belt and handle are not needed.

Still sucks like a goodun.

It will be interesting to see as to how you get on checking them out. I'm not sure which one to ask Santa to get for me :-) .

Well........... the Black & Decker won. Came with the necessary 'nooks and crannies' tools as part of the package rather than extras, and looked a lot more flexible than the Dyson. Two-thirds the price of the Dyson played a part too!!!.

Time will tell I guess. Will try and remember to post back when it arrives and I've used it. Thanks to DaveLees for the suggestion. PB

Well.............. used the Black & Decker twice now: today was the first for three weeks, so a good test!

Perfect for the job, but wouldn't want to clean the house with it! The main nozzle has a handy little retractable brush on it that makes cleaning hard surfaces a piece of cake, and the textile flooring with the brush retracted was no problem. The Pet brush also worked well (though I don't have a pet, other than SWMBO!), with the flexible stubbly end ideal for teasing out the few remaining ingrained and stubborn particles that the main nozzle left after a first going-over. The crevice nozzle fits perfectly down either side of the front seats , and I found it useful around the edges of the floor mats as well (too lazy to remove them just yet :giggle: !). First charge took just over three hours, and I'll probably run it flat before charging it again, and thereafter leave it on its charging plate permanently (has an automatic cut out when fully charged).

Being much lighter than a traditional vacuum cleaner, and cordless, it makes the job that much quicker too. Compact but seemingly well constructed, it lives on a charging plate about 22cm x 16cm. All in all, I'm delighted with it. Recommended.

Just bought one for the Mrs. to do the stairs and carpet edge and odd little jobs not worthy of getting the regular vac out but it works OK in the car (I've tried it).

Having said that, I prefer using a mains cylinder type vac (VAX etc) as they're more powerful...but concede you might not have a mains socket nearby.

Apologies for bypassing the Op's requirements of hanging on the wall  and leaving on charge but you might forgive me as the vac that I've just bought is a fine item indeed.  I looked at the obvious ones mentioned here but decided I wanted a good, reliable and trusted make combined with good performance and good battery life and one that would withstand getting knocked about and also had a good spares and service backup.

It's not cheap but is bombproof (it's essentially a workman's tool) and the battery life is excellent and it re-charges in 20 minutes max. (usually much less).

The round nozzle on the body is virtually all you need but it has a crevice nozzle and an extension tube.

Makita BCL180 Z (blue) or ZW (white)  BODY ONLY   Plus 18 volt Lithium battery (BL1830) and charger  (DC18RC) ....both sold separately.   OR get all three as a kit.

The battery and charger are part of Makita's interchangeable system which utilizes all sorts of power tools.

I paid £160 for the three items (the blue body, not the white)....you can pay more, and if you can get it cheaper you're doing well (I think Powertools UK are a bit cheaper (I recall it's £145 including postage).

Screwfix   http://www.screwfix.com/p/makita-bcl180z-cordless-vacuum-18v-bare/77934    do the body for £35 but they charge a fortune for the battery, so a bit of shopping around is required there.  I went to my local tool shop who gave me their best price.
