Vrs handling traits

Featured Replies

Hi,

Having my vrs for only a week I drove it for the first time to work this early morning in the rain. Went around a series if bends I've rounded thousands of time before in all my cars. This time I had a massive tank slapper (full lock on one side then other then backwards up an embankment) have never lost the back end like that before.

Is the vrs prone to rear end looseness? Or is it the cheapo rubber on the back tyres? All the under pinning a of the car were sound as I just got some bushes changed and was given a clean bull of health. Any input would be helpful. Thanks

Supa????

How cheapo are the tyres? Ive got budgets on mine and even driving like a willy the backend stays put

Vulture directional something or other. Fronts are hankook ventus I think

First off that's not a tank slapper, a tank slapper happens on a motorbike and it means the front wheel violently shakes left to right (bars 'slap' tank) and has nothing to do with the rear sliding.

What your car did was fishtailed.

I wouldn't say the VRS is prone to overseer anymore than any other big fwd car, but it will go if you let off the power whilst turning hard, and it's even more likely if you're left righting (Scandinavian flick effect)

An uprated rarb makes it more likely too but again only really when you lift off at the wrong time.

If your cars standard(no uprated rarb)you most have been driving far to fast around the corner, best thing you can do is drive steady and learn how your car behaves as you've only had it a week! Had mine nearly ten years and have never had anything like that happen no matter how much I come off power mid corner so mybe change tyres....and be careful

It'll be the tyres as people have said.  I had mine for nearly seven years and I never experienced what you described.  One thing to consider is the RARB, but even with one of those on, if you've got cheapo tyres on it won't help.  In fact, the ARB will only increase the oversteer and cause more issues.

I also have never lose my tail

So must be the tyres

This is my first FWD car in 7 years. the last one I had was an Impreza, the one before was a Merc C250 and before that was my Celica GT4. I may as suggested drive accordingly. But all of the cars I've had even the FWD ones on the same corner this the first one that has behaved this way. Thanks.

Even with the stock front anti roll bar and a mahoosive 28mm neuspeed rear anti roll bar i never lost it!

Possibly crappy tyres letting go far too early!

As standard you'll understeer rather than slap the tail out!

Possibly you 'let off' mid corner as you went in too hot! Thus transferring the weight and experienced 'lift off oversteer'

I've got a cheap ass tyre on my drivers rear and if I turn left real hard and it's a wee bit damp it steps out a little so I'd get some good tyres on it. But also I used to be able to get the back end out on my old pug 309 diesel by letting off mid round about so maybe adapt you driving style a little too.

Hmmm. Might have to re program my mind to drive wrong wheel drive and lift off oversteer as appose to power oversteer. But am going to rotate those vulture or whatever tyres to the front.

I've had mine let go on me.. Lifting off on a rather greasy roundabout.. Although I did provoke it and had already turned off asr to stop it fully turning round :)

The only handling problem I have with mine is it being slightly vague on long sweeping bends at motorway speeds.

Best idea, slow down, driving like a dickhead.

Not the greatest handling cars stock. :)

Did the traction control light flash whilst it happened?

It's the tyres, I tells ya. I lost mine recently on crap rears on a gentle bend (it just kept coming).

Before then, never even a hint of oversteer. Understeer like crazy normally.

Cheap tyres suck donkey balls.

Oversteer?!

I couldn't lose my tail if I tried - too busy battling understeer!

You can get them to go as Neo says, usually involves lifting off half way around a wet roundabout though.

Ah I see. I'm generally one for over-cautious driving at roundabouts - too many numpties round here think you give way to the left :wonder:

Did not have time to see!

I do believe its the tires. There does appear to be more than a little rear end slip on corners whether its a left turn or right turn. This morning on way to work there were no dramas but I still had yesterdays inicident in my head.....

Mine are even horrible on dual carriageways at speed. I have no confidence in them, despite having NO rear arb setup.

Really must refurb my spiders and get them back on the car...

sounds like a classic case of "oh sh!t im going to fast"  off the power , and out goes the back.

Had the tyres squeeling round a roundabout with no issues but I am wary of the back end going as there's not much weight over the back end and if it's standard the back end is quite a bit higher than the front if that makes a difference....

But the whole point is, that really doesn't happen with a standard vRS. At least, not when running all four boots the same.

Would be well worth sticking ones head under the back end though just to see if there is a bolt on anti roll bar fitted to the beam axle. That would make all the difference. A combination of that AND cheap tyres on the back could be lethal. Mine's bad enough just with old tired rubber on the back.

of course it will. No matter how good your tyres are at the back if you go too quick into a corner and suddenly take your foot of the throttle that is what happens. The tyres probably didnt help the situation.

A mate of mine owns a 306 gti with yokos all round (a car which doesnt lack grip). I had the pleasure of watching his talent run out once on a bend. "lift off oversteer".
