Kenwood Music Keg - Aka Phatnoise

Featured Replies

Now I've got the wheels, exhaust & remap out of the way - I am looking to what comes next ?

I.C.E of course,so started looking at what's around -- saw that Kenwood have an mp3 unit called the Music Keg -- anyone got any experience of this unit ??

Audi of america offer the "Phatnoise" system as an option -- it look's identical and plugs straight in to the head units -- wonder if the keg would plug straight in ??

Anyway got plenty of time to look -- will be sometime before I'm "Allowed" to purchase anything else

I did the whole upgrade; HU, Speakers, Amp, Autochanger and subwoofer. All uing Kenwood, the HU is the Z838W and plays MP3 & WMA, even in a folder structure. The display is great, shows the track listing etc, fancey graphic's, I spotted one down Halfords the other days so it could be a good chance to check out quaility

That's interesting, but I won't be keeping the standard head unit-- like the sound of Steve's(lloydee) setup -- I have had Kenwood stuff before -- always found it to be good.

Anyway plenty of time to work through the options -- gotta build the bank balance again - has took a fairly hefty hit just recently(other than car)

I've got a nice Kenwood "Mask" Single CD HU gathering dust myself. I was planning to put it in the Octavia, but i'd lose the Autochanger....

Which would mean getting a new changer and throwing a new bus cable in to connect to the head unit...

Hmmm decisions decisions......

Thin end of the wedge, slippery slope etc :D

Tell me about it !! -- I was perfectly happy with my standard vRS untill I read all the threads about Jabba and exhaust's and wheels and and and and and -- now it looks like the ICE will be getting the atttention --- I dunno -- it's a never ending cycle -- it'll be suspension or tints or fmic or some other equelly exepensive thing next !!

Oh yes.....that slope is very slippery!;)

Dave,

Apple iPod....you know it makes sense!

 260 quid!

Good if you want to keep the standard look I'll admit, but considering how weak the head unit is anyway, I think there are better ways of investing the money... :D

If you're Kenwood head unit will drive a CD changer, it would probably accept an MP3 changer - think Kenwood do a 10 disc one for around the 200 pound mark...

Rob.

Yeah, they do - but I'm considering the Keg too, but also a bit further down the road, just as Dave is. But just in case he's first - I'd like to know all about it! :D

Currently using a Kenwood M9021 HU, which is MP3-compatible (spared a few quid on WMA compatibility) and has that nice anti-theft automatic switchback front panel. I don't much like the look of it, but that switchback front was the clincher.

Just reading somewhere the Keg connects to a Kenwood HU just like a Kenwood CD changer - so if you're got a single slot CD head unit, then connecting the Keg would give you a job lot of MP3 storage, and the ability to still play the odd CD if you fancied it...and it wouldn't be a complicated install!

Go on, someone buy one and tell us all about it... :D

Rob.

Yeah, Dave - stop checking out the market, just buy one and give us a review!

(Preferably/hopefully a positive one.)

Seriously though -- I'm looking at head unit (in region of

I got a Blaupunkt Los Angeles MP72 which plays MP3 via MMC (or from CD). Plan to get the 1G Microdrive at some point; 80hours of music - that must be enough for anyone.

Normally retails around

Forgot to mention the pioneer unit has a 10Gb hard drive built in - also reads from memory cards.

Blaupunkt due the woodstock which is a mp3 compat with MMC card slot but no drive for

30G iPod, has to be the only 'serious' choice!!! :D :D

quite like the idea of iPod -- but from what I can see it's not easy to connect up -- plus it means keeping standard head unit - which is crap.

Don't say that, we just made Shugz upgrade his HU to one with a proper line in! :D

Think the Apple way of connecting it is via the tape adapter or FM modulation...

Rob.

how much does the keg hold? is it more than the alpine single cd mp3 + 6 disc with 7x 800mb 99 minute discs in? the alpine setup is lovely.. im sure rob will agree...

  • Author

oh no -- not more peeps that do mp3 changers / hard drives -- the "short" list is becoming anything but!!!

Can get 10Gb and 20Gb cartridge for the keg. The Alpine stuff sounds fantastic, but the 6 disc changer wouldn't hold as much as the Keg. However, there are other issues to consider than just raw storage size - one of mine was "how many MP3s do I actually have anyway?"... :D

Rob.

i have my collection heading for 2 discs now...

You'll have to fit the changer soon! :D

Rob.

was going to do it last night... but forgot
