Completed 1000 miles - Pros and Cons

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have just completed 1000 miles on my lovely Octy 1.2 TSI and honestly speaking i have never loved any car as this one. However, I still have some questions to ask about it. So let me start with the PROS first.

Pros:

- Long Term MPGs - 52.1

- Drove non stop for 3 hours and didnt even feel like anything

- 4 adults on board with half boot and no issues with the pickup and overtaking

- So quiet and smooth engine

- Great sound and temperature insulation

Cons:

- Over head wallet/glasses storage compartment doesn't shut at all, keeps on dropping. Dealer has ordered a new console and waiting for it to come

- My handbrake used to be so smooth and no noise however, suddenly it started to make a strange noise and feels so rough while pulling or releasing the lever. So grainy, feels like the cable is hitting metal or something. It is still doing the job though, no issues with the grip.

- From day 1 I hear a strange noise while turning the steering wheel (starting off, reversing, idling). First I thought its just hydraulics however it has started to annoy me. It is like humming or whining noise while turning the wheel. No knocking or clicks. IS IT NORMAL?? As all my other car steering wheels are quiet and have never experienced such noise. Steering does feel light and no vibrations.

Would love your thoughts.

S

I bet your love will last even with this minor issues  :)

I would get that handbrake thing checked out together with power steering.

That 'humming' you're hearing could be any of this things:

- everything is normal and you're just not used to it

- power steering fluid level is low (I would imagine this could only be if there is a leak somewhere since the car is new)

- fluid pump is bad (faulty from the factory)

- belt possibly loose (again probably not since the car is new)

The power steering is electric so no pump, fluid, or belt.

Are electric steering suppose to make little noises?? Or they should be dead quiet?

S

The power steering is electric so no pump, fluid, or belt.

Oh didn't realize it's electric now. I would get it checked out just to be sure it's fine - it is in warranty after all so...

The power steering is electric so no pump, fluid, or belt.

No... the power steering is driven by an electric pump so no belt but still has fluid.

A slight whine is normal when you turn the wheel as the pump only runs when required. So as you turn the wheel the electric pump runs.

Umm, no... You'd have a pump if you want to move a fluid through some pipes to achieve work. That would be a hydraulic system, which this isn't. You have an electric motor that is used to help you turn the steering wheel. And being electric, it gives rise to the modern systems of Lane Assist, Park Assist etc. Because it can be electrically controlled by the ECU.

To answer your question, no it shouldn't make any noises. Maybe you should be able to hear it in a completely noiseless environment. But in an urban environment, you shouldn't. Have the dealer take a look.

Could it be a possible airlock?

No... the power steering is driven by an electric pump so no belt but still has fluid.

No, it's electric so no pump or fluid.

Take the proverbial as much as you like, but if a pump & fluid is involved then there's the possibility of a airlock or bubbles.

Ah right.

Apologies. I wasn't aware they had gone to an all electric system. Thought they were still using the hydraulic system powered by an electric pump.

The steering noise isnt that prominent in the video however it moght still give you an idea if its normal or not.

While recording the video i realised that at a full stering lock (right or left) its making a strange knocking or clicking noise (starting off).

Thanks

And here is the video for noisy handbrake....

Not sure about the steering noise but the handbrake does not sound right to me at all.  It does sound like the mechanism is catching on something.

Sorry I just got dizzy watching the steering wheel go round........

Can't hear anything on the steering but you are holding it on full lock which any power steering would make that noise.

Cheers mate..

Did you see the handbrake??

The steering just sounds like mine does when I go lock to lock. Are you sure the handbrake noise isn't when the gaiter is compressed?

No, it makes that noise every time I lift and release the lever. It never did in the first week though!!!

Cheers mate..

Yes I would get that seen to as something is catching. PAS no problem though :)
