From Superb to VRS

Featured Replies

After having a fleet Superb for 4yrs I will be due a new car from Jan 14 and am considering a VRS either petrol or diesel (estate maybe). I currently have a Superb Elegance 2.0 CR TDI with:

Upgraded stereo, Park Assist, Tinted rear glass, IIRC, on 98k

Some questions I have: The upgraded audio is pants for anything that has any decent level of bass, and the tweeter setup in the door results in ear ringing at moderate volumes as they fire directly at your ears! - Does this occur with the Canton upgrade? Is the right tweeter aimed directly at your right ear? Can you play bass tracks without distortion at 25% volume?

Is the cruise control the new "distance" control or the bog standard speed set?

There seems to be no options for electric seats with the VRS - is this correct?

I like the idea of total park assist, having only used mine on a few occasions, as most of my parking is mainly bays, is this any good for tight spots?

What are the new sat navs like, I've not been that convinced with my columbus, especially at the option cost now - would i be better of with a high spec stand alone unit?

Also, do you need sat nav for the voice control to work? My current columbus has voice control ( replacement for faulty unit) but car was built before VC became standard hence no mic was installed.

That measly fuel tank!! what mileage are you getting from a tank of petrol and diesel? I currently average around 520 miles from mine doing 2k+ per month M25, M23, M2 london

I'm hoping that Skoda will still be on my list of suppliers, if not I may be looking at the golf GTI or GTD

Thanks

I have the petrol VRS and am getting about 345 miles to a tank (filling up when red light comes on)

Yes a short range, but only costs about £60 to fill.

No distortion with Canton, its a good system.

Fuel consumption with the diesel about 450 to a tank full, covered just over 1300 on three fills so far but when I fill and how much I can get in will vary.

There is no std cruise but you can spec traditional cruise or adaptive cruise as options £180 or £750.

Sat nav, personally I'd say get a decent standalone

I think VC is possible but not tried it

Don't know about the audio or parking, not part of my priorities.

Sadly no electric seats on the VRS. The cruise control you can pick either the conventional system, the automatic distance control option has been dropped due to supply issues.

Park assist is pretty awesome, it is also the only way to get front sensors which was a must for my wife!

Not sure about the voice control but I'm quietly confidant that you don't need the sat Nav.

With the amount of mileage you do I wouldn't buy the petrol, it's too thirsty for the type of journeys you do.

If you don't go for the octavia have a look at the Leon FR diesel rather than the golf.

Second Quiet nod for the Leon FR Diesel other than the golf (more kit, same components - about 5K less)

+1

I was pleasantly surprised after a test drive in the Leon. So much so, that I'm arranging a longer test drive to see if it really was as good as I first thought.

Of all the four Golf platform based cars, it is the one that's advanced the furthest from its previous incarnation (and by some margin) and it's great value too.

The Golf didn't quite do it for me, even in "tick every option" dealer principle spec. It doesn't look special enough inside to separate it from the Leon / Octavia. Only the A3 looks really classy inside, but then you start adding a few options (often standard on the others) and your past £30K before you know it.

If you need space then the Octavia easily wins, but if you don't then the Leon wins over the Golf (with the rider, "IMHO")

I have a Leon FR 184BHP due in 2 weeks. It fitted the bill perfect as the Octavia has got to damn big now

thanks for all your replies.

i was looking at the Leon, but I'm not sure Seat will be on our list.

I'm veering towards the petrol VRS with a few options on. I only pay for my private mileage, by pence per mile, so it will actually be cheaper than diesel currently. (business mileage on fuel card)

looking at the diesel VRS, why is it only 0.1sec faster 0-62 vs the 150 ps diesel engine? Seems odd for 20% more power?

One thing against the Leon - I don't think you can get a heated screen, unlike the diesel Octavias.

Yeah, I am going to miss that. Have it on my Mazda, but not the new Leon

I've never had it, but it's one of the more appealing features on the Octy.

As an aside, I found the Leon configurator to be pretty pants - I'll never complain about the Skoda one again....

It is superb. Switch on and drive off in 60secs in the depths of winter

One day last week I set off, turned a couple of corners and the windscreen steamed right up, just as the sun was in my eyes and I had to stop in the road as I couldn't see a thing!

why isn't heated screen an option with petrol?

Smaller Alternator is the reason I believe

Just wait until there is a small slit of clear glass and drive anyway...... It's known as the "tank commander" lol!

really?

It's not available on the Golf or the A3 either - which seems a bit odd.

You can get it on the GTD and GTI as part of the winter pack

Thats not hard tho, the last Leon was an awful, wretched thing! One of the most dull cars weve ever owned!

Seriously.... reconsider the Leon (or at least go drive it)

With the offers that they had on at the time, the Golf could'nt even come close price wise for equivalent kit (we are talking £100/mth difference)... When I was looking (Mid-sept), the Golf didnt even have the 184bhp engine!

However, be wary of clueless Seat dealers.... When the 184bhp version came out (Standard FR diesel was 150bhp) I asked SIX dealers what the differences were (was it just a remap? any other improvements? etc).... gormless responses from all six apart from a "probably" at one.

That said, I was painstakingly close to ordering one.... Octavia vRS in the same spec (White, 18" Alloys, Cruise, DAB, Nav, 184bhp diesel) won the day. Only annoyance was the Leon had cruise as standard, front parking sensors, and was about 1K cheaper with the same GMFV (PCP deal cancelled it out).

No, the winter pack only includes heated washer jets, not heated windscreen

According to VW website and the brochure I have the winter pack does include a heated windscreen ;)

The heated windscreen is available with the TSI VRS in other countries. I have it on my order and I've seen a TSI VRS delivered with the heated windscreen. It's just SUK patronizing you guys.

I stand corrected on this, though it's not part of the winter pack. It's sold separately as a Climate Windscreen (only in conjunction with advanced telephone connection) for £285 (plus £310 for the advanced telephone), so £595 for a heated screen on the Golf.

On the GTD the Winter pack contains heated front seats, heated windscreen washer jets and low washer fluid warning light only, all for a bargain £355!! Strangely they only charge £375 on S, SE & GT and you get headlamp washers as well - that's £20 for headlight washers!
