Which FMIC? Weighing up the options, custom?

Featured Replies

Hey.

I've got a hybrid turbo on the way next week that is good for 215bhp.

I had my clutch replaced 1000 miles ago along with a SMF so now i'm looking at what intercooler to buy.

The TX one is cheap, but not sure how well it would be at over 200bhp, i've heard that it can limitate the power due to all the bends and the fact it goes back around the oil sump which isn't ideal.

What other options are there and how much do they cost?

The Airtec looks great at £495.

The seat sport intercooler from darkside dev or with forge hard piping?

I'm wanting to replace basically all the boost pipes, which I'm not sure the forge ones do?

Anyone who has made their own, what did you do and how much did it cost and what power are you running?

Really not sure what to get, and which is the best value for money.

Thank you for any replies :)

Daniel

Not much help here, but when I get round to buying one early next year, I'll be going for a Seat Sport type from Darkside, along with their pipework setup. The setup is extremely neat and tidy, and avoids all those messy hose connections. It's expensive though - if you've a BLT with a standard/hybrid turbo then you're looking at about £400 just for the pipework!!!

I had the original Forge FMIC from when it was first designed. IMO, the biggest plus was it's plug and play aspect. You only changed the bare minimum pipes keeping the work to a minimum. It also fits in front of rad / behind crash bar without any angle grinding or hacksawing required. On the downside, it's smaller so will have less of an effect than the Seat Sport one or the Airtec one which are both quite a lot bigger.

The downside of the Airtec one and possibly the SS one is that some cutting is required of the crash bar (not completely but some) to get it to fit.

I think Jason has / had the Allard one which arguably had the best direct, solid pipework but IIRC, required going wide mouth and removing a section of the crash bar.

Thank you for the replies.

Is there any chance I could pay around £300 for hard pipe and a decent intercooler set up?

I might know of an old style forge cooler which might come up for sale soon!

Have you got Instagram??

I do. It's dann2707

If you get a ss or airtec try got hold of a ibiza crash bar you will only need cut a bit of the ends to get it fit instead of chopping away at the standard one. With both of them will need cut some plastic of your bumper to and also darkside pipe work replaces all the boost pipe but you do have do some more cutting of plastic under the headlight as even they say its a direct fit it's not

Iv tagged u in my intercooler pics on instagram. Cost me alot less than £300 + the cooler itself is bigger than all the ones uv mentioned + only cost £70 delivered ;)

**** mate that's awesome! Looks epic, I think I did send you a pm about it a while back but might not have sent properly?

I'm only in leeds too, did you get the work done locally? I'm reallllllly interested!

Interested in having the same thing done that is.

Bought the Cooler from ebay 57mm outlets.

Bought the 57mm pipes and flexis from Ash hoses. Were in Dewsbury think they are based in Hudds now.

Bought the MAP sensor pipe from forge

Got the ally pipes welded by Chris (crispy) in Horbury. His company is Crisp-tuning.co.uk.

Iv had to take it back a couple of times to uprate the ally brackets and change the design abit around the turbo. Will be taking it back hopefully next week to sort another bracket out but tbh the design hadnt been dun before with ally pipework ally welded so he was starting from scratch.

I also got a darkside turbo connector (bored out centre) but thats not essential really

Thank you for that, really appreciate it.

Where does the pipe go from on the inlet part of the intercooler? Does it feed back around the sump?

There is also the Pro Alloy item, which as far as I know does not require crash bar cutting and has discreet pipework. It ain't cheap mind.

My mate works at pro alloy might tap him up for a cooler :)

Thank you for that, really appreciate it.

Heres the thread i made when i 1st fitted it :)

The only bit changed is the bit coming off the turbo is now Ally + the bracket near the sump is re-enforced. The flexi sylicone is now at the front of the sump on the straight pipe.

Thanks a lot.

I'm definitely more wiser on the subject but i'm not sure how much I want to spend now. £495 for the airtec seems my best bet, but I just can't justify it! arghh

The Airtec looks really good, but until I here from someone who has it fitted and has pushed the car to its limits with it on i won't be buying one.

Just went to total the darkside devs intercooler and pipework up thinking if the discount code works still I might purchase tonight (Had a glass of wine and im not feeling so frugal)

Didn't realise the price listed excluded VAT, and the voucher didn't work haha.

Never mind then

That's what I did lol, added it to my basket then the VAT and delivery made me **** the bed!

You could make your own pipes rite? Surely it would b cheaper?

That's what i'd love to do. Just need to know every single pipe, dimensions and where to get them from like what Matt has said above.

I'd just want a twin pass rather than a single pass I think due to the extra pipe work that causes a lot of air turbulence especially at higher power.

And no doubt i'd come into problems with making it all fit = money = hassle

Well as long as you no the size of pipe u want and have someone to help you bend or weld (or if you can do it yourself) then you can just go for it

I can get the airtec kit with brackets and all pipework for £470 new.
