OSX Mavericks has been released

Featured Replies

For those interested, the latest version of OSX version 10.9 has been released by Apple.

The latest version is available from the Mac App Store, for the princely sum of £0, yes the latest OS is available FREE to everybody.

The download is 5.6GB in size, so it may take a while for the download to complete.

As always, make sure you have a backup before carrying out the update.

Also be aware that it can sit at 1 minute remaining for more than 40 mins depending on what you are upgrading from as it deletes a lot of redundant code during the install. I got almost 20GB back after the install had finished.

All installed an running on my 2013 Retina Macbook Pro.

Is it worth it?

Do you know if the OS X server app still works with the new OS or whether there is an update for that app?

I couldn't find anything last night when I was looking at the Mavericks update.

Downloaded and all is working fine

Installed it at work. Took several times longer to install than download.

Is it worth it? IMO, no. In hindsight, I wish I could role back to whatever it was before.

Seems pretty much the same, except now the top menu bar is in the way on both screens, and the dock still doesn't move around. :(

Also broke my VMs networking too. On the plus side, I've finally managed to make it bootcamp Windows, although I suspect this isn't due to Maverick, more persistence on my part.

I did a Back up on Time Machine before I updated, if you did can you not go back via Time Machine?

Now downloading, it's estimating another 5 hours yet...

Downloaded and installed on a MacBook Pro yesterday evening without problems. Parallels 8 and Windows 7 Ultimate seem unaffected by the update. I like it.

The dock does also move between screens, simply click on the second screen and move the mouse to the bottom of that screen and the dock will popup.

The entire OS is now full 64bit unlike Mountain Lion which still retained some 32bit code. The main desktop and dock make it look like nothing has changed, however the backend workings has been substantially rewritten, there are better graphics drivers and support for 4K video displays.

On my 2013 Retina Macbook Pro (Quad Core i7), there is a noticeable difference in performance, the OS now supports realtime memory compression so that even those users with small amounts of memory should notice a big improvement.

Agreed. Now I've just got to wait until the first of November for my Ipad Air then I can check out iOS7 which I have actually avoided due to breaking my old iPad :)

Isn't iWorks meant to be free on Mavericks as well? But when I check it out on the App Store it's still full price!

Pages, Numbers and Keynote now come preloaded for free on new Macs but existing owners still have to pay for them.

I am very disappointed to discover that I am unable to transfer my considerable collection of PDFs from iBooks to Books. There is lots of discussion about this on the Apple Forum but no fix.

Meh!

Meh!

It is pleasing to see a contribution - even if monosyllabic - from a completely satisfied Windows 8 user to this Apple users thread. ;)

Only real noticable changes are iMaps( which i wont be using as i would actually like to arrive at my requested destination & in 1 piece), ibooks useful if you want to read a book on your Mac but if you have an ipad cant see the point.

The most irritating thing that i really must work at getting used to is within Safari, right click popup to open link in new tab / window, they have swapped the location of these so that 'open in new tab' is now top of the list,  i was so used to it being 2nd that i keep opening a new window lol lol.

Thanks for reminding me about iworks, can't see it in my apps folder ( even though they did advertise its free - typical Apple).

I did have an imovie & iphoto update to add after installing Maverick.

So far so painless which is the way i hope it stays as it was the main reason for switching to a Mac, having had pc's for years.

Is that still not fixed? :o

Actually, I have the solution to that one......

iTunes finally got the rights to sell the Beatles back catalogue some time ago.

iMaps is the promotional material for Magical Mystery Tour! ;) ;)

It's killed my Facetime. Crashes everytime I try and launch it now...

Meh!

How do you know they are a Windows user??

Installed Mavericks on my 2009 iMac and works fine :)

Also upgraded the iPhone and iPad to iOS 7.03 :D

How do you know they are a Windows user??

Just a hunch .... and this ...

I upgraded on friday.. the upgrade process was easy and painless.

Not sure what all the fuss is about - given 15 mins to find my way round the new UI and its fine.

Its definitely faster then 7, and ive not run into any compatibility issues.

He MIGHT be talking about iOS7

Neo_VR, are you using Windows??

(this should sort out the confusion :giggle:)

In thread about Windows 8 which you also posted in? Further confirmation...

its growing on me... defo a learning curve, and the difference between metro and old-skool apps is a PITA (alt+tab and win+tab) will get worse before it gets better, but in general good stuff!

I seriously need to get an external drive so I can do a back up

Still running 10.7.5 :(

installed and running on Mac Book and iMac, one thing I have noticed is that this version does "phone home" a lot compared to the previous IOS.

I run little snitch and this is always flagging up outgoing things. This morning we have Submitdiaginfo, radar.submissions.apple.com,store agent, init.itunes.apple.com

And so on, I recommend little snitch to anybody who wants to keep there system safe and secure, also if you run CS6 from a gratis download.

Just discovered I'm going to have to update OS X server to version 3 after the upgrade.

Fair enough, but its another $20 download...

There are a few problems.

Been running since it was available for download on MacBook Pro 15" Retina 2012 quad core i7.

Have you tried to do a 3 finger swipe backwards or forwards in finder using a trackpad? Or even a 2 finger swipe? No can do. It worked fine in 10.8.

In Safari the swiping backwards and forwards has now changed direction. To go back a page you swipe to the right. To go forwards a page, you swipe to the left....

There is now no list of open including minimised documents when you right click (or 2 finger tap) on the word or excel icons in the doc. you have to click open all docs and then chose the one you want. A right royal pain in the a$$.

Overall it is great, and multiple screen handling is fantastic. I currently have Safari running full screen on both monitors, with different websites open. Amazing.  About time too.

Western Digital is warning customers of an unfortunate interaction between its storage management software and Apple's latest OS X release, 10.9 'Mavericks,' which can result in permanent data loss.

If you have any Western Digital External drives DO NOT upgrade to Mavericks. Just do a web search for "western digital mavericks" to see all the issues.
