Hi Everybody,

I have a 2002 Fabia 1.4 Estate and I whilst driving suddenly lots of beeping and ABS and TCS light came on. I was very close to work so I continued on for the 1/4 mile with the lights still showing although I couldn't really detect any problem (I seemed to stop OK). When I started at the end of the day there were no warnings at all. I don't see any noticeable drop in braking performance although the pedal seems a little lower but that could just be my imagination. Still plenty of brake fluid (I checked). Any thoughts from the forum?

Thanks,

Greg

System requires reliable readings from all ABS wheel sensors. Any issues with one and it'll have a seizure. It's a safety related system hence the warnings etc.

Could be wheel bearing related... Either a worn out one or a recently replaced one that's not seated fully.

Could be wiring or sensor related. These things stick in mucky parts of the car.... wheel wells.

Hopefully if you get the car scanned it'll show what sensor or area is complaining.

Hiyer,

Have you checked for any codes on the ABS controller?

Well.... I now have a code reader but don't know where the plug is or how to get to it. Going really well do far isn't it?

Drivers side, under the steering wheel to the right, there is a pull out flap, pull, then forcefully pull again (it's a 2 stage job) and there you go.

Thanks. I have three codes it seems.

16785 - exhaust gas recirculation

17851

18057

The last two weren't even on my list! Not sure I like the look of these...

I think 17851 is to do with the potentiometer exhaust gas recirculation i.e. related to the first one.

And a quick google for the last one says (taking from Ross-Tech Wiki)

18057/P1649/005705 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ABS Controller

Possible Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON

Possible Causes

  • Fault Code(s) stored in Brake Electronics (J104)
  • Communication Error with Brake Electronics (J104)

Possible Solutions

  • Check Brake Electronics (J104) for Fault Codes
  • Check Communication with Brake Electronics (J104)
    • See Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)

And your first code from Ross-Tech wiki gives the below:

16785/P0401/001025 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System: Insufficient Flow Detected

Possible Symptoms
  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
  • Reduced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
  • Reduced Power Output/Engine running rough
  • Increased Emissions
Possible Causes
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow restricted/clogged
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve stuck closed/leaking/faulty
  • Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve faulty
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Check/Clean Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System
  • Check/Replace Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
  • Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
