TCS lights on, the car does not start

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

After replacing my battery, my wife started to see a problem that we have not seen before.  Whenever we wanted to start the car and turn the key on, if we saw the TCS light coming on and remained on, the car would not start.  This happened randomly, but one day the car did not turned on anymore.  It seems like outside hot temperature made things worse.  The mechanic that has been checking the car for the last 5 days is giving up on it.

When I could not fire the car, waited 30 seconds, if the TCS light was off, no problems at all to turn it on.

The mechanic has been checking all relays and fuses, I tthink that he has already changed a couple of relays with no definitive results.

My car is a 2007 Octavia 1.9 tdi BJB engine code.

Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance....

Desperate owner,

Hi ivangs944,

I am having similar trouble, but mine doesn't seem heat related as I am in Ireland, also in an Octavia 1.9 tdi 2008.

The car has an internittent issue (never know when its going to happen) where the traction control warning light comes on, and either it will not start, or if running we loose all power and the car will just stop. if you leave the car for 10 - 15 min, it will usually start again, but may cut out again in next 5 min or next few days, just never know when. If trying to start, engine turning over fine, but obviously being prevented from firing.  Like yourself, if no TCS light on, no problem.

This problem has been happening over the last 2 weeks.  My guess root cause happened when my wife was driving through a slightly flooded road and a truck came the otherway and drenched the car. The problems started the day after that. Likewise, my mechanic has looked at fuses, tried getting fault codes, no obvious issues he can find. His thoughts seem to be turing towards an ECU problem - possibly need replacing - not cheap!

If anyone can advise, would be much appreciated.

Hello Jock,

the main difference I see in our problem is that the issue can happen to you while you drive.  It does not happen to me at all.

Mechanic advised me to buy a new cockpit, I did.  Did not work!  Now, he wants me to buy the BUS CAN Gateway.  The part is not available in Ecuador new.  I could get one on ebay fromt the US or Europe.  But I am fearing to end up buying all the electrical components one by one.....

Hope someone can gives us a hint!

Similar problem with a 1.8 FL Octavia - engine turns over but won't fire, the MFD says 'TCS Error'. Intermittent, leave it 10 secs. and it starts ok, and the rest of the day its fine.

I think the problem is lack of use of the car and a depleted battery upsetting the TCS - which is strange because it turns over OK. However I've had the battery on charge for a couple of hours and, touch wood, I appear to have sorted the problem.  I'm not sure how long it will take to fully recharge the 60AH battery, but I'll give it a run every day for awhile.

Well folks any update. Same problem here on a 2011 2.0 d octavia. Any help as to how you resolved would be highly appreciated.

In the end I replaced the battery and, touch wood, the problem hasn't come back. Note that the Electronic Control Module did a couple of funnies after the battery had been disconnected and the new battery inserted - one of the dash board warning lights came on (can't remember which), but eventually went off by itself. The electric windows needed coercing to work properly. Fortunately it's all covered in the user manual and they are 'design features'. The new battery also took a couple of days to get upto full charge (I would have expected it to be fully charged on delivery, but it appears not), so I did once get the TCS Error the day after the new battery went it, but never since.

Well avi4tor, you a true gent for replying. I'll try a battery and let you know how it goes. It's literally just after doing it 3 times before it started. Thank you m.

New battery 2 weeks now, problem remains. Just ran diagnostics and this is what I get. I'm going to post this in a new thread (if needed) and see if I can get any help. Thank you for you replies.
