Hesitation

Featured Replies

Occasionally, on joining the motorway in 3rd, i put my foot down and there is a definate hesitation or slight jerking, followed by a boost of power and cloud of black smoke. The car is only accelerated spiritedly when it is up to temp. i have no DPF (or just a hollow one!), but have never really noticed smoke. I Don't get limp mode. Worry, or just a diesel characteristic? I have done 30,000 miles in the last 10 months and am up to 140000 now, but always serviced every 10,000.....

Sorry mate can't help until I have a few more details.

Such as what engine type (PD is presume) - if so has it had the injector recall. Does it drive normally on normal roads or is it the same. Has the injector wiring loom been changed at any time. When was the last time the EGR + turbo were cleaned. Last Air + fuel filter. Do you have VCDS

Sorry, forgot i posted this.

PD 170 with hollow DPF. yes, injector recall, yes new injector loom at some point in its life from reciepts. EGR Cleaned probably never, tried to remove to do, but failed, but elephant mod and restricted with an egr plate with a smaller hole about 20,000 miles ago. Turbo not cleaned, but forte turbo cleaner and wynns turbo cleaner both used in last 20,000.

Serviced every 10,000 on the dot (3 monthly for me). new Pipex panel filter 10,000 ago.

I did buy a VCDS from amazon that turned out to be dodgy, so i dont really use it in case i fry anything. I could get access to a real one i expect though if it would help.

I THINK it happens on a fill up from morrisons, but not shell. this could be complete coincidence though? I thought diesels were happy on any old crap. Not used morrisons for ages and it hasnt happened for a long while......

If you think it might be fuel related, you could run some Millers fuel additive through, to give the fuel system a clean through.

I tend to stick with Shell, I think it makes a difference. The PD tends to run smoother. The base diesel is obviously the same, produced to the required BS standard. It's the additive blend that will differ, between fuel brands.

Worth getting the car scanned by a local member with VCDS too, just so you can be sure there are no engine fault codes logged.

Could be a few things, poorly EGR valve, perhaps Intercooler pipe starting to split?

Wife had a 1.9 TDi 130 PD some years ago now and the pipe broke on that, woukd barely run and smoked like god knows what, could be an early indicator?

That said the injectors on these can be a bit problematic also, a few people have had rough/poor running issues following replacement injectors care of the VOSA recall, depends how well theyve been done, wouldnt rule that out either.

I would start by getting it scanned by VCDS. This is a good starting point. Cleaning the EGR is always worth while on this particular engine, I tend to do it as an addition to the 10,000 mile service on my mates motor. Once you have your scan results please re post and I will take a look.

If you have never cleaned the turbo, you may wish to consider this as they are known for accumulating carbon and seizing up the variable vanes.

Also the other advice you have been given by some wise members (i.e. split pipes / intercooler) can cause the symptoms you describe. I would have a good check of these as this will cost you nothing but your time.

Dual mass flywheel.......

Since posting, no probs. yesterday, problem again. Only difference is I filled up at morrisons. Convinced it only happens at morrisons with their fuel.....
