The Octy Wagon

Featured Replies

Thought it was about time I started a build thread as bolting bits onto my turbo charged skip doesn't seem to be showing any signs of ending...

Bit about the car - bought 3 years ago (almost to the day) for a silly cheap price. Pug dealership in Colne had taken it as px and wanted rid. Market value now, 3 years down the line seems to be roughly what I paid for it 3 years ago! Bought it to replace my Mondeo ST TDCI which I'd put mega miles on doing a 120 mile a day commute for a year so wanted something quick, pretty frugal and well built - the Octavia ticked a lot of boxes.

Anyway, for the first couple of years I just looked after it and then bought a set of new OEM vRS mats off eBay. And that kinda started the ball rolling. Currently the spec of the car is:

- 2006 Octavia vRS TFSI with 18" Zeniths, Jumbo Box, dual zone climate, electric windows all round and front and rear PDC

- lowered on AP coilovers

- grill plastidip'd which I'm not all keen on - going to get my spare grill dechromed and properly colour coded

- Polo/Sharan stubby aerial

- OEM vRS mats

- Skoda/Castrol 'bits' bag for spare bulbs etc

- full LED conversion for interior and number plate lights

- cruise control retrofit

- Columbus sat nav + upgraded CAN gateway

- VCDS tweaks (dual fogs, beep on lock and lock above 10mph)

- semi-debadged rear

As always, there a few things I still want to do to it:

- clean and add details to the engine bay (Porsche oil cap lurking in Halifax Post office somewhere for me to collect tomorrow)

- either refurb and space the wheels (thinking black or battleship grey!) or get something else with a decent offset

- 50% tint from the B pillar back

- fully debadge the rear and get the recess smoothed

- maxidot retrofit

- FL climate panel retrofit

- get the grill properly colour coded

So there you go. Keep thinking about getting rid and getting either a FL or a 330D Touring but this does everything we ask of it and as mentioned, we picked it up for such a good price that it hardly owes us anything now after 3 years!

Comments welcome!

Very nice fella

Unless your bored with it, I wouldn't even think of getting rid

Better the devil you know

Now...If your thinking of a mkIII VRS, thats a different story :)

I look at the mk3 vRS and whilst I like it, I think to myself for that kinda money I could get a B7 RS4/B8 S4 Avant with money to spare ;)

Running costs a bit different on the RS/S Audi's

Plus your dropping down to an Audi badge :D

True... Must admit I do keep having dirty thoughts about dropping the A3/R32 V6 lump into the Octavia... Maybe if I can find one cheap!

Engine swaps are pretty pricey unless your good with a spanner (or know a mate that is)

You dont mention it having a remap

If not, that might renew your interest in it for a while

I wouldn't bother. If you're considering spending that sort of money, just do a big turbo conversion.

I like this :)

1 lives around the corner ( not as funky or as low ) i keep thinking ooo that would be nice if ...... :D

Pipe dream really. For not much money can easily surpass the power of a V6. Just like the noise they make!

Not remapped - to be honest, I don't see the need at the moment. Few little exterior bits need sorting and the wheels obviously but focusing on getting the interior sorted like the FL climate panel and Maxidot.

its a great car though - karts me, the wife and 2 little kids all over the place, usually with at least 2 bikes/ surfboards or roofbox on.

Got some yellow laminx floating around too which i was going to do the fogs with but thinking I might just get some light smoke laminx now and do the fogs and wing mirror indicators. Need to look more into upgrading the CCM as well to enable cornering fogs, DRLs and maybe even a MFSW... Lots of plans...

There you go...

You've already decided to keep it :)

I'll keep going with it until the time comes to change it. Going with another Octy would mean I could pull most of the bits off like the coilovers/Columbus etc and shove it on the new one...

Wish I'd bought some bargain wheels the other week but after deciding the offsets wouldn't have worked, I think they probably would have. Doh!

Oh, and looking at the front end pic has made me realise I really need to get the bottom grill plastics coded as well... They look pants!

Me likey

I've not really seen many MkII Octys in black. Makes a nice change from the usual blue / white / silver ones that I always see.

Nice wagon. :). Mine also has roof bars and Thule on most of the time at the moment.

I had a couple of ST TDCIs too in a previous life. Good car but I prefer my skoda to any current blue oval offerings.

Might be time to let it go. £5k'ish with all the mods (and original parts), £4k for the base car with the suspension, Columbus and all the other little bits removed.

Will get a proper ad done...

Another change of mind! Going to keep going with it and get some exterior bits tidied up especially since the wife nudged the bumper into a high kerb the other day. Get that sorted and the dink in the bonnet, Maybe fit some spacers and dial in the ride height a touch to bring the front down a bit more.

Then early in the new year, maybe sooner, rip all the mods off, pile them in a big corner and then its time for a facelift DSG hatchback in (common I know) blue and shove all the mods on that :D

Oh, and got my Porsche oil cap on now too but need to pull it apart and rejig the internals so it sits straight. Might get a coolant cap as well or maybe just get the plain black replacements to get rid of the blue ones on the coolant and washer.

My up and down changing of minds continues! Actually put a deposit down on a FL Scout on Friday. Then got cold feet and got the deposit back. Decided it was a great car but wrong time (Xmas coming up/wife on maternity leave etc). So definitely pushing on with the wagon now! Wife nudged a high kerb the other day so perfect excuse to get the bumper off and the whole (stone chipped to hell) thing sprayed. Also toying with getting the rear badged removed and smoothed.

In terms of actual mods, the Porsche cap fits perfect and looks pretty smart. Need to give the bay a good clean though and I've ordered black washer and coolant caps from AKS this morning which should help.

Also on the hunt for new wheels. Just missed some Audi OEM BBS CH028s which would have been perfect. So looking for something else with that kinda fitment.

Also keeping an eye open for a maxidot cluster and a FL climate panel.

And finally, I may treat myself on pay day with a set of GIT esque honeycomb upper and lower grills from superstore.

Will try and collate all these plans with some pics!!!

OK, few more changes in store.

Still waiting on my black washer and coolant caps from AKS. Crap service so far... no confirmation mail, no sign of them, nothing.

Anyway, some stuff arrived through the post:

My Porsche oil cap. As mentioned above, this has been on the car a while now but took it off tonight so I can pull it apart and rejig the internals so that when fitted, its level (out the box is sits at about 11:20).

Next up, some Eibach 15mm (each side) spacers. Need to source some longer bolts and lockers but think I'm going to wait on getting my wheels refurbed before I fit them...

And finally (thanks KBPhoto!), a Forge short shift kit which I'm going to get fitted this weekend...

Looking at LOADS of other stuff at the moment... still very much fancy some SuperSkoda grills and FL climatronic panel. Those are top of the the list next, along with getting the bumper sprayed and the wheels refurbed.

Boring update but more stuff arriving... AKS admitted a muck up at their side and these dropped through the post the following date - cheers Alex ;)

Preferred over a Porka coolant cap as I reckon the coolant caps are a bit OTT and would look out of place next to a normal style washer cap. Hoping to get these, the oil cap and the short shifter fitted this weekend. Not sure when the spacers are going on as I keep looking at different wheels...

Still looking out for a reasonably priced FL climate panel, maxidot cluster and I think I'm going to take the plunge and get a lower SuperSkoda honeycomb grill. Decided both are a bit OTT but the lower only with the slatted top grill looks pretty good (as per what Trevor tried with his old one).

Also need to get it booked into the bodyshop to get the bumper, grill surround and bonnet all re-done.

OO I want one of those washer bottle caps. Where did you get it from? Details?

The shifter fitted yet? Just the one bit or both?

Tempted by the kit myself

  • Author

Just gone for the main part (backwards and forwards). May add the side to side bit later... Not fitted yet - planning on doing it this weekend hopefully.

Keep us updated with the forge shifter, don't know if there be good results with TDI but interested to fit one on my Octy.
