Possible to fit towbar to Citigo?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Is it possible to fit a tow bar to a Citigo ?

Secondly, has any one done this?

Thanks,

Hugh

I like the Idea of a Citigo, but the small boot puts me off as I like Camping.

If I had a small trailer I could get all my camping gear in that.

There's always the roof rack/roofbox option as well

A lot of Europeans seem to tow small camping trailers in the summer. That could be because they have bicycles on their roofs!

Don't do it to the car, I mean it's not got a gutsy enough engine for all that extra weight.

Guessing if you need a trailer then all the rear load/seats area will be full as well.

I've had 4 up in mine plus luggage, whilst ok on the flat it does struggle a little on inclines, and is it really designed to attach an approved towbar to?

My owners manual says do not fit towbar to Citigo. Not even aftermarket towbar.

But you could use Citigo as a trailer: http://www.smart-tow.com/towframe.htm :giggle:

The Westfalia bar is not for towing only for Bike racks.

Does the Citigo, Up!, Mii have Type Approval and Unbraked or Braked Towing weights,

or simply like many vehicles  (including some from Skoda like mk2 Fabia vRS ) not allowed to tow and no EU approved tow bar available, or can be fitted & used to tow with, your insurance could be invalid ?

Thanks to George for the most sensible answer so far!

Look at the sticker, usually at the bottom of the drivers side B post. If the car is Type Approved then it will have towing weights on it. If there is nothing stated then it will be illegal to tow anything.

Ahem...How about my roof rack/roof box one :D

Meh - I've seen motorbikes towing small single wheeled camping trailers. And I bet there's no towing sticker on it either.

A lightweight ali trailer is not the same as pulling a caravan or yacht up a hill.

Motorbikes, Trikes & Quadracycles have their C&U rules.

The subject is cars and Citigos, it hardly matter what any one thinks, they can do what ever they like as long as they are prepared for the consequences.

If a car was not put forward for Type Approval with Permissable towing weights, then that is how it is.

If the MOT man, the Insurance or Crash Examiner, Police or VOSA are never looking or bothering, then it is hardly an issue in the UK.

'You Decide!'.

If the combination is for any reason checked, like going to the local tip with some garden rubbish,  ignorance of the rules, legislation or law hardly matters.

Professional Tow Bar fitters and those that sell towbars know where they stand by law.

Take your citigo with a trailer to Spain.

They will soon let you know if it is type approved.

Even the trailers have full technical/registration documents.

Get caught towing anything over there without the right paperwork and they will impound it.

Looking at the spec page there is no towing info;

Weight

Specification Description

Kerb weight - kg 857

Total weight - kg 1,290

Max payload - kg 433

Max roof load - kg TBC

Max towing weight - kg (unbraked/braked) N/A/N/A

Max nose weight - kg N/A

Boot space with seats up - litres 251

Boot space with seats down - litres 951

The Max Roof load is now given as 50 kg,

it is just that Skoda are not hot on accuracy or updating their websites.

Thank you.

That confirms that the Citigo is NOT Type Approved to tow.

You may wish to follow the advice of Staib and ignore the Law, but please note that if stopped for any reason you risk:

Prosecution for invalid insurance

Contravention of the Construction & Use Regulations

Contravention of the Towing Regulations.

The first can result in a large fine and points, the others can result in a large fine AND the loss of both the vehicle and the trailer.

Here is my Ford Ka.

The Ka is not type approved to tow anything but a Fiesta tow bar went straight on.

My Ka was built just before August 1998 when type approval for towbars was introduced.

Be sensible and small cars can tow well. Still this doesn't make it legal...

If you drive any vehicle without type approval for towing.

Your insurance will be 100% null & void if you are involved in any accident.

The thing with breaking towing laws is it's one of those things that you can get away with for years on end. But when they have a blitz in your area, and you're out on the wrong day, they properly throw the book at you.

A lot of these "towing" bars are in fact only for fitting bike racks and are not for towing.

Just to be crystal clear, I haven't actually advised anyone to 'ignore the Law' as mentioned by Llanigraham above, so please take his references to that with a generous pinch of salt.

He is of course correct in pointing out that all sorts of bad stuff can happen if you do break the law. But I'm sure that most of us never do that... ;)

Thank you.

I don't get it. If car manufacturer says NO for towbars, how could it be type approved.

I don't get it. If car manufacturer says NO for towbars, how could it be type approved.

The system is that when a manufacturer applies for Type Approval for a model they state whether they consider it fit for towing and the fitment of a tow bar. So if, as in the case of the Citgo, Skoda state it is not suitable then the Type Approval is not granted and no towing weights are stated on the relevant documention fixed to the car and in the Handbook.

The Type Approval can be on specific models within a range, or with complete ranges. so, for example, the Fabia Vrs is not Type Approved whereas some of the saloons are. Ditto the Ford S-Max Sport is not Approved but the standard one is. Jaguar do not Type Approved several of their models.

It is all down to the whim of the manufacturer.

And for those that think they will never get stopped, VOSA Check Points in tourist areas are often pulling inappropriate vehicles in the summer. They will and do prosecute and although often don't impound both car and trailer, often do impound the trailer only. Many end up being scrapped!!

When sportier models aren't approved, it's quite often just down to how much of the rear bumper would have to be cut to allow the bar to be fitted.

Think I'm going to buy a unimog, then I can drive it on my tractor licence (no weight restrictions, at all) and tow whatever I want
