Possible to fit towbar to Citigo?

Featured Replies

Actually it might have nothing to do with cutting the rear panel.

VAG might take a VW & a Skoda, same Engine, same gearbox, same brakes and suspension, almost the same unladen weight,

maybe the VW a ticky heavier,

They submit Towing weight for the VW and it can tow,

& the Skoda gets no weights submitted and has no type approval for towing.

Good thing with your Mog on a tractor licence is you can trundle about with your orange beacon on.

I think the point is being missed. Yes a towbar can be fitted, for example the Fabia vRS could have one fitted and IIRC was able to in some EU countries. The difference is it's not been approved for the UK.

So yes fit one its possible, but you risk breaking the law, invalidating your insurance and possible warranty.

Or atleast this is how I've understood this.

simple question

if a vehicle is not type approved for towing, is there a process like SVA / IVA from vosa that would allow use of a towbar

just a thought

Yes this was also looked at in the fabia forum many years ago IIRC and I'm sure its quite expensive. This is becuase it has to be tested to get an approval.

Although I could be wrong but this is how I've understood it.

I thought type approval was an EU thing not specifically the UK?

Saw a nifty product today which is a tow bar box. In essence it fits where your tow bar bike rack would be.

So it's a small hard box on the back of the car. Clearly designed for camper vans etc. Like the OP I enjoy camping etc, I just pack a really small tent and less ;)

It's great.

I  had a tow bar fitted to my VW Up BT now sold and will fit the same bar to my new Citigo this is only for a bike rack the bar is produced by Westfalia and has a TUV type approval it does not invalidate my insurance in Germany .It is towing that causes the problems as they are not type approved in any land for this use it is clearly stated in all EU handbooks and logbooks.

I seem to remember the boot capacity on the Citigo is the same as the Fabia 1, its actually not to bad.

After all it is a 'Citi' car.

It would be interesting to see if a Citigo with a towbar failed its MOT as towbars are now a part of the checks on MOT's (ASAIK) well the electric's are at least.

You do not need the electrics if you are just using it for simple bike rack

I have visions of those cars you wind up with a penny on the back and they go around doing wheelies!

A Toyota iQ can not be fitted with a towbar, due to no Type Approval,

but there are plenty with Bars fitted for Bike Racks,

and some with 3 bike racks with a carry box on it.

(the steering or front traction can go light, that would be effecting braking as well,

but only if you overloaded.)

toyota iq rear carry rack.

If an MOT is a concern, even though it is fitted as a Bar for carrying a Rack,

then be sure to remove the Ball before the MOT.

I know this is dragging this thread up from the dark ages, but has anyone actually fitted a bar to a citigo?

I was looking at the wiring installation instructions on the westfalia site and it looks pretty complicated.

Nice to know it has been done.

It is frustrating that the car can't legally tow (I'd only want it for the cycle carrier) especially as I have the perfect small trailer to tow behind it. Seems like my motorbike will be my primary towing vehicle

Hi,

Is it possible to fit a tow bar to a Citigo ?

Secondly, has any one done this?

Thanks,

Hugh

No, but I want to, so I can carry two bikes with my thule carrier. I was quoted over £400.00 by a fitter. Seems a lot? Could I do it myself? I once fitted one on a polo. Same purpose.

@stefanjo

You are only going to know if you can by getting a tow bar & fitting it.

How much is the Tow Bar and wiring kit & who from?
