Front off-side brake squeak!

Featured Replies

I've had squeaky brakes when applying the pedal before on cars but in this case the brake squeaks in an embarrassing manner while travelling at <30 mph only when the pedal isn't pressed.  It was fine for the first 6-8 weeks of owning the car and happened on one long trip.

Obviously you'd initially expect some sort of caliper locking on/stiff but I've taken the calipers of both sides, removed any rust/gunk/dust and re-greased with copper brake grease which seemed to solve it for about a day.

I've also found;

No slider issues, no scoring on the discs or pads (which are almost new looking Ferodo ones) and the brakes work fine, you can easily spin either front wheel by hand and there's a little friction but nothing unusual for discs and pads.  There is light friction at a certain point round the rotation, but it's very little contact and it seems too light to create the ear piercing shrill - however, the only things I'm left with seem to be;

1. The Ferodo pads are just squeelers - change the pads

2. The NSF disc got slightly warped after this long trip (though I'm not a hard driver at all and there's no feedback through the pedal when braking)

3. The pads are too tight in the carriers - they are stiffer than any pads I've seen before but I don't know if this is normal on the Fabia brakes.  I had to knock them out with a mallet and even greased on the guides they were a tight hand fit going back - do I need to grind the mountings down a bit on these pads perhaps?

I'm personally thinking number 3 is the most likely but need feedback on how tight the fit normally is.  Having stripped and fettled one side, then the other in case I was hearing reflected sound I thought I'd better appeal for some advice!

I have this problem after a long trip of heavy braking it will keep squeezing really loud , I'm putting it down to discs and pads so I'm going to put you discs and pads along with a brake fluid change hopefully will fix it

I also have this problem, usually happens when I'm cornering (not hard) but when I touch the brake it stops, is pretty annoying

Take the pads outs. Get a hack saw and cut a groove from top to bottom in the pads then put a sloped edge on the front and back of the pad (braking surface)

Dont ask why but it sorts out loud pads 19 times in 20

Then rebuild with copper slip.

If your unsure what I mean just say and ill make some pictures up

Thanks fletch101, cutting the back of the pad changes the metal's resonant frequency iirc.  I'd forgotten about that trick, I thought it went out years ago!

The Ferodo 4037 pads come with chamfered edges front and back already, they actually look like a decent pad.

However, I think it's point 3 as I found on the Ferodo website itself a document about diagnosing noise;

http://legacy.ferodo.co.uk/ferodo_web/displaydocument.aspx?id=22

A couple of the points in that caught my eye;

Check that the brake pads fit freely and easily into the caliper
brackets.  Hmmm, not freely as in "knock these pads in with a hammer" then I'm guessing?

Clear burrs off the brake pad edges if required.  Oh right, so they're self assembly required!?
Note: If the pad is not moving freely inside brackets, there will be ongoing light contact
with the discs, causing squealing as well as resulting in tapered pads or uneven
wear within axle.  Ah yes, I'm familiar with the squealing, thanks for your efforts in quality control...   :giggle:

Next plan then, file/grind pads so they actually fit inside the brackets properly and see if that resolves it.  :wall:

Just an update to confirm that filing the lugs on either end of the pads solved the problem, they were just too tight fitting.

How much did I take off?  Well, quite a lot as it happens, I had to remove about 1mm from each end and about 0.5mm from the width of the lugs to get to the point where they were snug - (insert and remove by hand without feeling loose).  I also greased them with copper grease.

I've driven a bit since including a 3 hour run yesterday to make sure it stayed fixed and it has.
