TDI Hot Starting Question

Featured Replies

Today is the first day I've usd my Octavia since buying it.

When stating from cold it starts straight away.

but after the engine is up to temp and I restart it, its takes slightly longer, it turns over for approx 2-3 seconds longer before starting.

It always starts just turns over slightly longer before it does.

Is this normal?

My car is a 1998 Octavia 1.9TDI which has done approx 164.000 miles

  • When you know it will be bad to start, try jumping the car from another battery....

  • Look for a replacement from a scrappy? As for VCDS, look in VCDS forum on here there is a thread with a list of people who have it. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk

Coolant temp sensor failure is one of the most common failures on VAG cars causing the symptom you describe. Replace with genuine VAG revised green CTS only. Buy cheap & buy twice.

Cheers mate, have you or anyone got a link or part number for the coolant temp sensor?

VAG part number 059919501A

Another possibility is the engine isnt being cranked quick enough which is normally either the battery or starter motor- its a safety feature that prevents the fuel being injected into the cylinders when the engine is hot if the engine isnt turning at a minimum speed but isnt used when the engine is cold so yours could be on the limit?

Cheers mate, and that is a direct replacement for the CTS in my Octavia?

What would be the cause of that mate? Starter motor, battery?

Either. The engine has to be doing 250rpm before fuel is injected, so a poor battery or lazy starter can both give the same result.

How old is the battery?

Check all crimped cable ends, as even if the starter motor and battery are fine, then they could reduce the cranking speed.

Also worth checking that the anti-shudder butterfly valve in the EGR pipework isn't slightly sticky....

+1

This is almost certainly the cause. It's unlikely to be the CTS with these symptoms.

But he's saying it starts fine when cold, but not when up to temp. If his crank speed was low surely it would be hard to start from cold.

When cold it starts injecting fuel straightaway regardless of the cranking speed.

A new battery fixed this on mine :-)

Cheers for all the help and help.

I've got no idea how old the battery is, it look newish, I've had a look but the no date or anything on it.

Is there anyway of checking the battery and starter motor as I dont want to be buying part to see if it will sort it. I would soon find the problem and get the part that wil sort it??

Anyone know of any way of checking the battery and starter motor to see if they are the fault?

Been doing abit to looking on the net about this, seen people saying it could be the battery being the wrong rating. Where could I find the correct battery rating for my car?

What does it say on the battery in the car?

That's the original OE battery. It has never been replaced.

70Ah in a diesel?  I am sure that I have a much larger battery in my 110...

IIRC, your 110 started life with a 72Ah.

Pretty sure that's what my old car had.

So as the battery could be the one it left the factory with, and as its a 70ah one could that be the reason I am having the warm stating issue?
