Winter wheels and tyres on today

Featured Replies

My wife is complaining that her car (Citroen DS3) feels a little bouncy since I fitted the Winter wheels and tyres (Bridgestone Blizzak)

I have gone for 16" steels from 17" Alloys and Bridgestone Potenzas). with a pressure of 2.4 bar all round....recommended by the manufacturer

I am toying with the idea of reducing the pressure a little

Any thoughts on this?

Don't; the pressure is usually specified for the best tread wear and tread temperature, not for ride comfort.

I would be amazed if she could really tell the difference; it's probably like the old adage that cleaning a car makes it drive better.

  • I always find it amusing when any thread on winter tyres attracts the inevitable reply of   "I've never used winter tyres in my life and have absolutely not one iota of experience with them whatsoev

  • Those who don't understand Winter Tyres think they are ONLY for snow

  • The point of winter tyres is not to protect summer tyres. It is to protect your car (and it's occupants) by being safer in winter, along with enabling you to continue to drive when there is snow aroun

Been out in it this morning...Its not very bouncy...just different and clearly, the tyres still need bedding in

Thanks for your help..........The pressures will remain OEM

Hi,

What size wheels should i be looking for guys? The audi ones look good!

16" IMO...just like mine

Comfier ride...and cheaper too

I bought the Nokian WR D3 on price last year from Oponeo (even though it was about 2nd to 5th in all tests) - went  for  225/45 R17.

I agee it would be better to have 16s or even 15s but my 1.8 tsi was fitted with 17" wheels  when new so a direct swap was needed if I wasn't to buy an alloy wheel/tyre set which I didnt want to do at that stage.

Satisfaction with winter tyres is a rather negative thing because all I could say it felt the same coming up our estate road with 4 " of snow as it did on a dry road!! Can't say fairer than that.

Hope other purchasers  are just as negatively satisfied during the coming winter

Think I'm one of the few that keep the original 18" tyre size - can't bring myself to put small wheels or steel wheels on the vrs. Makes people wonder even more how I don't get stuck. Never got stuck last year and drove through some deep snow that I would never have imagined driving through previous to having winter tyres.

Winter tyres are very good, although the Dunlop Winter Sport 4D tyres I had on the BMW last year struggled when i stopped on a multi-storey car park ramp; the car did get going with a lot of ASC flashing and slippage.  I'd only stopped because the Corsa in front of me lost traction.  Having said that, the BMW was about the only RWD vehicle moving at all that morning.

So what is the general consensus on fitting H rated tyres to a vRS? I know they're still rated for 130mph and the manual says you can fit lower rated winter tyres, but does that mean going from Y to V?

I have Dunlop WinterSport 4D on mine with a rating of 91H.

Cheers for that.

I went for Nokian WR A3s specifically as they come V rated.

It's probably worth checking what the official minimum rating is, or you might find that you insurance won't be valid. Or ask your insurance company.

Did a dealer or insurer tell you that V were the ones to have?

My post was perhaps a bit confusing. I wasn't suggesting an insurance company would tell you what the minimum speed rating was.

When I phoned my insurer to enquire about fitting different sized winter wheels and tyres they were keen to establish that what I was planning to fit met the manufacturers specifications (in which case they didn't need notifying of the change). As I had no intention of fitting anything that didn't meet the official specificaiton I didn't ask what the situation would be for tyres that weren't up to spec. But if you are planning to fit tyres that don't meet the minimum spec. it would probably be prudent to ask your insurer about it, rather than finding out there is a problem in the unlikely event of a claim. But then others will probably say I'm just being overly cautious!

Edit: www.blackcircles.com do warn about the risk of tyres with too low a speed rating invalidating insurance though:

Thanks for the link Steve..I struggled getting some last year.

No worries, I've run into the same problem with Audi wheels on Skodas over the years :)

any chance you could pop the link up again please :) , I could really use some centres that would suit my winters, the ones from my Gigaro sit too proud.

Those look better.

Sorry if the link is earlier in the thread I couldn't spot it

H's will be fine for winter tyres.

Should be a 55mm cap, for the Gigaro. I might have some older Skoda caps in the garage; I can check if you like?

ChrisRS are your wheels from an Audi A4? I have old A4 wheels different to yours but I'm wondering if these are what I need. The hole in the centre seems to measure 57mm as far as I can tell?
