These LED DRL bulbs work without resistors

Featured Replies

I'm with Anzio on this: judging from the photos Johann has posted, in bright conditions the LEDs just look like internal reflections within the light housing whereas the standard DRLs are obviously illuminated and catch the eye.  Cars that have LED DRLs as original equipment don't seem to have this problem so there seems to be a big difference in effectiveness between LEDs behind a lens designed for a filament bulb, and LEDs in a purpose-designed housing.

  • I did think of doing this mod a while ago but dismissed it as too much agro with external resistors and scotch locks etc, but for £33 I'm still not going to bother.

  • Isn't 29W rather a lot for DRLs?  Using a fairly conservative LED-to-tungsten conversion factor, that works out at equivalent to a normal bulb of nearly 150W!  OTOH it says the light output is 800 lum

  • By their very nature DRLs do NOT have to have a focus or spread the light forward.  That is NOT what they are supposed to do.  All they do is create a spot of brightness on the surface of a moving veh

Reflector-type lights are designed around having a small, bright filament in an accurately defined position, such that the carefully-designed reflector aims the light where it's intended.

I guess with these LED lights, you no longer have that - instead you have a number of separate LEDs in different locations to where the original filament would have been, pointing in varying directions, so the reflector can't do its job properly. You then get light scattered in unwanted directions, and reduced intensity in the desired directions.

So while close up the LEDs probably look bright, from a distance in daylight they're not focused enough to be seen so well.

That's my theory anyway!

By their very nature DRLs do NOT have to have a focus or spread the light forward.  That is NOT what they are supposed to do.  All they do is create a spot of brightness on the surface of a moving vehicle to be seen by others. In no shape or form is any of the light focussed forward to spread light.  With your headlights yes you cannot use an LED bulb but with a DRL you can and to my eyes the LEDs are quite a fair bit brighter than the yellow originals.

I have the original LEDs i purchased from SuperSkoda early last year.

I agree with Johann they are brighter as they were advertised showing the difference.

Some sites only advertise led bulbs to fit but can not prove the difference
