Argh - Unsecured Loads!!

Featured Replies

Coming onto the motorway slip road this morning off the roundabout I move over to go round the outside (two lanes) of a dropside leyland truck....

As I do so, the pile of boxes on the back topples and scatters on the road in front of me, I swerve to avoid but hit one or two with a really nasty bang under the wheels etc.

I pull over, hazards a flashing, as does he to recover his load.

My first thought was what the hell was in the boxes - but as I look back I realise why they made such a noise - they were not cardboard boxes but sandstone blocks!!

Can't see any damage at the moment, but spoke with him and got all details anyway, will check it out properly later.

****! Luckily not through the windscreen.

Had a similar incident on the A34 a few years back; following a lorry and suddenly see something come off the back.....bang, clunk, clunk under the car.

Was a piece of RSJ!! Nice L shape gouge in front bumper, no damage under car.

Lorry drive.....oblivious to it all. At least your stopped and you've got some details.

Hope alls well.

Cheers.

Adrian.

It's scary. I was once following an artic' down the A1 and it's rear doors flew open and a ladder fell out!

Luckily I managed to avoid and get the driver's attention, but I nearly poo'd my pants...

Regards,

Mark

Ian next time you go out to the car look underneath for any fluid leaks just in case. Sorry if that's teaching Granny to suck eggs ...... :)

I'd get it straight round to a KwikFit/similar that does a free tracking check and only charges for adjustment. That way you can get it up on the ramps for nothing.

Not at all - the car will go up on the jacks tonight and I'll have a good look underneath, see if it has gouged anything \ belted anything.

Good plan - the fluid check was intended to ensure you can get home safely though ....

Must be the day for it...had enough potential energy today to push a STUPID Yaris driver sideways for a good few metres and still she pulls out on the roundabout...still when she sees my now slewing estate next to her door (ABS firing away) one would expect her to be surprised, OMG she's used to this sight I thought and round I went for a second attempt at my exit.

I tel you this now, in the last week I have been driving like a granny to conserve my tyres for the RPM tour. They have been the most nerve racking few days in a long time...glad your okay Ian, good job your still on stilts!

They all drive like that round here, number of times I've had to use my brakes going round a roundabout is shocking! I'll pull onto a roundabout, make eye contact with the person waiting on the junction to my left, they'll look back at me then pull out. Even cyclists do it!

Maybe they *want* to have an accident so they can get my details... ;)

Rob.

Don't they p*ss you off right royally those gimps in little, slow cars who insist they can get onto the roundabout in front of you when you're having a bit of fun trying to up your previous exit speed record by a couple of mph - and when you only get one shot at a particular roundabout in a day that's a long time to wait for another opportunity ... :p

There also seems to be some kind of inverse relationship between the size of the car in these driver's minds, and the size of it in the real world - they take 3 bloody hours to crawl up 6 floors in a multi-storey, and another 4 to crookedly wedge their matchbox across 2 spaces... :cussing:

Does really annoy me on roundabouts too, especially when you've managed to get it going sideways... ;)

Rob.

Ah - but sideways is not necessarily quicker - didn't you read that stuff on Corner Carvers ...

Yeah, I read it with interest but not concern... ;)

If I was really that bothered with being quick I wouldn't have a 1.6... :D

Rob.

Me neither - it's always hard to take bigoted fools seriously, even when some of what they say makes sense ... :D

My wife drives a Yaris and she doesn't drive it slowly; imagine my grip prints in the front passenger seat and me franticly pressing imaginery brake pedal.;)

Acceleration above 30mph not great but then it's only a 1litre. Can stay at 80mph all day though......once you get there.

Makes me really appreciate how quick the my car really is.

We will assume, charitably, that Mrs SkodiRS doesn't make a habit of pulling out onto roundabouts in the path of oncoming sideways Octavias ... since she presumably knows what the nutters are like who drive them :D

Oh yes! She knows (and tells me)!:D

I wasn't sideways...untill she pulled out! And no it's not a slur on all yaris drivers. I want Mrs CD to have one, or forever speak Micra shall I.

Never said you were, your honour - twas that young shaver Rob I was referring to :D

Assume you were saving the tyres then ... ? :p

ROUNDABOUTS ! ROUNDABOUTS ? DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT ROUNDABOUTS - I LIVE IN MILTON KEYNES, ROUNDABOUT CAPITAL OF THE WESTERN WORLD.

Rant over for now but there are now so many people moving into Milton Keynes from abroad at the moment that have NEVER driven on a roundabout before in their lives. I'm serious.

This means that the faster-approached roundabouts (MK is mainly 70mph dual carriageway, remember) are becoming like a very dangerous game of chicken

All I can hope is that the side airbags and ESP can get me out of trouble if and when it happens. :drive1:

Ah but Nick lives near the immortal Magic Round-about!

I cannot stand roundabouts! I have 2 large roundabouts with lights near a shopping centre that attracts a number of visitors who 1. cannot take a roundabout period 2. do not understand traffic lights on them and 3 Don't concentrate! I have had to stop behind people who have pulled up at the green lights! I also nearly got hit sideways on by people who have crashed the lights, due to the fact that the lights go green one way as soon as they have just flicked to red the otherway there is no time delay at all! I also have a pet hate of people using a right indicator to go straight on, or not signalling at all. A few drivers got caught out last night by a driver that flicked round the roundabout without indicating and every lane stopped on the inside lane of the roundabout!

Maybe I am wrong but I have always been taught that if you take the first exit you signal left, 2nd you don't indicate, 3rd an beyond right indicator. You should always signal left after you have passed the last exit before the one you are going to take. It works most of the time except on those roundabouts with 6 exits!

Not too many in Exeter. There is one amusing one on my commute which is sausage shaped... :D Really long and tight bends at each end... Also, don't have too much trouble with them either, perhaps because I know how and when to accelerate out onto a roundabout in relatively heavy traffic???

gone round the roundabout and now back on topic!

glad you're ok ian, that's the main thing.
