Likelyhood of a replacement 170 engine soon?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Long time lurker. First time poster.

I am seriously contemplating ordering a 170 DSG Elegance, but was wondering if Skoda might be upgrading the engine anytime soon to a more efficient one?

I think I read somewhere the 150 and 184hp Octavia engines don't fit in the Yeti?

If it was going to happen it would have been done with the facelift, so there's no point waiting for a better engine.

Well, the FL was the obvious opportunity to do so and it hasn't happened. The next likely opportunity would be the MY2015 and 2016 changes, but MY2015 seems improbable - why would you only wait 6-7 months after the FL launch to update the engine line-up? But stranger things have happened I dare say.

I'm no expert, but that sounds a bit unlikely (other than in certain details like pipe and manifold runs, which presumably often need to be adjusted anyway when much the same engine is used in different models). I though that eg the 180 engine was 'simply' an uprated version of the previous type. But open to correction.

Possibly to do with whether the engine is transverse mounted or t'other way round?

The 170 hp TDI is already the most efficient in the TDI line-up for the Yeti, so why mess with something that really works well? The extra ratings for the same engine in the sister brands is most likely a samll tweek in the mapping, or maybe even just a "paper" adjustment of the actual performance.

After 65,000 miles plus over four years with the 170 TDI, I can find no faults with it. Plenty of performance, totally reliable, no oil consumption to speak of (1 litre or so between 20,000 mile oil changes), quiet, better than 40 mpg average over all kinds of driving, no DPF difficulties with even a preponderance of short journeys.

My Take: go with what is proven to work and forget about the relative small incremental spec improvements.

Small problem, though: After four years, one does get a hankering after new wheels. Problem is I cannot find a vehicle I'd rather have. Space, comfort, handling and practicality fits me perfectly. Th FL does not really offer any improvement warranting the added cost. Two desired improvements, though -move taht bloody rear view mirror out of my line of sight and add 8 inches to the boot space.

Thanks for this detailed assessment. Thats my mind made up. I will book a test drive to make sure I like it. Then go from there.

As far as I can see this vehicle ticks all the boxes for for my next set of wheels.

I think I read somewhere that the rear view mirror is mounted higher if you spec the heated windscreen?

I seem to recall that the very first 2 litre diesel Yetis had the PDI engine not the CR tdi. I may be wrong but I think it was changed a few months after launch.

I did wonder if the Yeti would get the revised engines at half model year change.

Of course my memory may be totally wrong and senility is fast catching up with the dicky hip and ankle.

I think the mirror position  is different not because of heated screen ( I now have the heated screen and it is the same as was on my elegance which didn't have it) I think it comes with the auto lights and wipers both of which rely on sensors behind the mirror.

Makes sense. Thats probably what I read on another thread.

My 170 elegance is everything I thought bit would be and a lot more. The performance / economy balance is excellent, ride and handling are superb. Things that I'd tweak would be:

Make the middle seat sliding

Make the sunglasses holder big enough to accommodate something other than an automotive engineers specs (see Eddie Jordan)

DAB should be standard.

Needs some sort of piped drain in the rear number plate housing to take away water when loading the car. I've twice had a Yeti Shower.

Boot light is woefully dim. A headlining mounted light and tailgate lights would be great (like the superb).

The engine /drivetrain if leave well alone.

It's senility! :giggle:

Thanks Graham...consistently straight to the point. I will spend a few minutes in Bobdog's corner in penance.

Perhaps it was the Superb that did an early engine swap.....as I desperately try to dig myself out of the hole"..........

Digging only makes the hole deeper! :giggle:

The latest EA288 TDIs (150/184) are currenly only been used in vehicles based on the new MQB platform.

Audi have recently adopted a 150 Ps in a4 and q5, but this is a tuned 140/170 rather than the new EA288

So I wouldn't expect the latest engines in the Yeti for a whole, although they may use the 177..

No PDI engines in Yeti as far as I know - and mine is an early version from 2009
