HELP ! misfiring on my 1.8t vrs

Featured Replies

Experts,

I have misfiring problem for the past couple of days. There is huge drop in rpm and loss of power but whats intriguing to me is there is no Check engine light. I somehow deleted error codes and ross tech is not seeing any fault code again. i drove 250 kms yet it does not see error code. how do i make sure if its coil pack issue or some other thing ?

Thanks

It's worth asking your dealership if your car has had the could pack recal as it's free if not and may well resolve the problem

Thanks Essexocty but you did not notice my location i believe. Re-call almost never happens in India.

If you have a consistent miss firing you could remove or disconnect one coil pack at a time. And the one you disconnect which makes no difference to the running is the faulty one.
Also it is common not to get a engine check code for coilpack issues.

Its not just consistent but continuous too. I'll try your suggestion. Is it recommended to change the spark plugs while we change the coil pack ? Also , am i ok to change just terhe faulty pack and not all the 4 . coilpacks have been failing notoriously back here with my friends. just want to ensure i do whats recommended

Hi Buddy

If you have never replaced the spark plugs or don't know history then i would suggest yes replace then as you are making life easier with the coil packs removed.

Spark Plug to use are

NGK PFR6Q (platinum) (std skoda recommended)

or

NGK BKR7E.(copper and cheaper)

or denso Ik20s if you have lot's of money as these are iridum

All those plugs should be gapped to .032" or 0.8mm

For your coil packs read the part number on the coil pack and you should replace them all if they are not part number 06A 905 115 D or 06A 905 115 R as these are latest revision and more reliable.

Any other revision are classed as suspect so not worth risking keeping them installed.

hope this helps.

It helps ? Man, i can't thank you enough but I need you some more advice here. I think plugs and coil packs have never been touched by previous owner. I would like to change them to have peace of mind. Could you validate if these are right fit ? since i have to ship them to india, buying from US is a lot cheaper. am able to get 4 coil packs and 4 plugs at about 100$+shipping.

On the gaping, how do you ensure the gaping is so precise in mm ? wont these come with the right gaping from the factory ?

cheers

Those parts are correct my friend good price too.

On the gapping the plugs are not always gapped for a specific car as they are a generic plug so gapping is needed for optimal running. You gap them using a feeler gauge and a gapping tool or like me a careful flat screwdriver to open up gap or a slight tap of electrode onto a hard flat surface to bring gap down if too wide. You may find plug gaps are ok but I have never seen this and always had to alter mine.

Gaping the bkr7e is straightforward using the tap or lever method as they are a standard copper core plug, the iridiums can be damaged if you don't use a proper gap adjuster.

Thank you Bowders & Karlbar. I have ordered a feeler gauge as well. will do the gaping as recommended and update the thread.

Bowders, I'm sure you wont call these expensive. http://www.amazon.com/DENSO-Iridium-Spark-Plugs-5304/dp/B0032YA4PW/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AM36U8UAVEWII . Would you suggest me to buy these ?

My coilpacks and ngk plugs are in transit. However, i would like to mention this which i over looked earlier. My clutch is in terrible shape. Slot it into reverse and there is violent jerk which is scary. rest of gearing is hard to engage. I begin to wonder if the whole thing was clutch related for the reasons 1) ross tech vag com didn't throw any error and no engine light 2) Idling is not harsh and no vibrations felt. 3) loss of power under sudden acceleration. The reason i suspected ignition is the day when i sensed drop in power clutch was not all that bad but soon became unusable. Your thoughts ?
