6 speed over 5 speed gearbox benefits?

Featured Replies

Interesting that the overall gearing on a Yeti with a 6-speed box in 6th is the same as 5th on a 5-speeder (post #4). I'm less bothered my 2WD 110 has just the 5-speed manual now! 110 with 5 cog box is fine, but does sometimes give the feeling it could do with an overdrive ratio at motorway speeds. Sounds like the 6-speed box wouldn't change that? Fine when SWMBO is driving as she often forgets 6th exists when she's driving one!

Just for interest, on my BMW E46 (330d), those with a 6-speed box have a 10% higher overall ratio compared to those with a 5-speed. I.E. 10% lower engine revs for a given road speed. Along with an extra 20bhp at the flywheel.

I have the six speed manual box. I can assure you that for the first two or three months I was changing up to a non-existent 7th. I am used to it now; but know exactly what you mean. (I am certain BossFox feels the same; except when on track!)

Yes, done that. :)

Once I remember the noise is because it's a diesel and not too many revs you adjust to it.

Most new 6-speed Transmissions have a higher 6th ratio, compared to their previous 5th ratio, to reduce rpm at cruse, plus fuel saving.

Achieving max speed in 5th (in a 6-speed box) is down to Power vs Air resistance or drag.

The move towards 8, 9 or even 10 speed Autos is interesting, but another topic......

2 wheel drive v 4 x4, 110bhp v 140bhp, 5 gears v 6 gears - these are the choices we all face. At the end of the day it comes down to what use your beastie is to be put to and how deep your pockets are. Had price not been a consideration I would have opted for the 4x4 140 but settled for the 2 Wheel drive 110 Adventure.

The 110 5 speed does require that you maintain a speed of at least 45mph before engaging 5th gear as in top 1000rpm relates to 35mph.

As previously mentioned horses for courses.

Hi All,

Just popping my "first post cherry".

I have a Octy 2 1.4 TSI which has 6-gears, and am in the process of changing it for a new shape 2.0 TDI 4x4 Elegance also with a 6-speed manual.

Last weekend I test drove a 6-speed Yeti Adventure. I took it out for an hour and a bit (just my wife and I). We drove about 10-miles on the M20, then back on the A20 and then (mwhahahaha) took it for a bit of impromptu green laning on the North Downs on some rather muddy 25-33% hills (previous car was a Landy and I know most of the green lanes in this area) - well, you gotta try before you buy, huh?

Anyway, my point being is that driving in this manner, I found the 6-speed box more than capable in all these scenarios, however! I think I preferred the opton of having the 6th gear as I have found it to be more like an overdrive gear on my Octy and made the Adventure drive and respond in a similar way to my current car.

Not sure of the gear ratios on either the 5 or 6 speed boxes, but thought I'd let you know my comparisons between a road car and an on / off road car.

Cheers,

Faffers.

P.S. No Yeti was hurt in the green laning, it just got VERY dirty - and the look on the salesman's face when we took it back, just wish I had a camera!

... just wish I had a camera!

So do we!

Hello, by the way, and welcome :hi:

Welcome +1 ...  anyhoo how come you left it so long to pop your cherry then! I know what you mean regarding the 6th gear in the 1.4 TSI as I had one too.

I wasn't aware Yeti's were supposed to go off the black stuff (gets coat) :giggle:
