Rather guttered :(

Featured Replies

Ok so put my fabia up on the ramps to find out what the hell is wrong. Had power steering light on dash, on and off. Heavy steering then fine again. Realy confused me so after getting a new battery, fliilling up power steering fluid (in a stupid place I may add) and a set of new bushes & tyres, checked sensor. Code reasy coming up with nothing. I now know what is wrong. Previous owner must have abused car as some how casing for pump is all cracked and broken some duck tape on it all wires split and a tiny but noticeable from underneath oil leak :( Not particularly a major job but having to strip it all back to replace it all I haven't got the time. Rather guttered.

Ah no, sorry to hear about this, amazing how some people just abuse their cars! I have always been taught that if you look after your car it will look after you!

Hope you get it sorted quickly and easily!

You seem to know your stuff with cars, what do you do for work?

Won't be getting sorted quickly. Have too much work on, 2 kids birthdays and xmas coming up. Looks like shes going to have to sit in the carport looking miserable till the new year at this rate. Found a same car as mine all ready damaged but might just buy it as a donor for parts. Fabia hospital!

Ok so Im a self employed dress maker........ but learnt a lot car wise from a very young age, my dad always wanted a boy but got 3 girls first haha. And also my fiancé works at a car breakers yard. So always got tools and ramps around.

She's had a new battery yesterday, but now reader is saying battery voltage is low. What now guys? Finding problem after problem

You sure it's the casing and not the jacket surrounding the pump that's been taped? The sensor swap is pretty straight forward and takes minutes.

Check the wiring from the alternator where passes over the gearbox, fairly common problem. I think it sensing wire which stops the battery from being charged.

Also an obdII reader won't necessarily pick up a fault.

Before starting, you should see the battery light illuminate on the dash cluster. if not, check alternator load(?) wire.

I think that's what I was blithering on about.

The Alternator load wire - is that the common fault where they break is visible from the nearside with the tray removed?

Mine didn't appear to be "split" but after a light tug it clearly disintegrated and thus the problem.

So its not always immediately obvious that its broken even if it in fact is ?

If it is extend it with some extra wire like I did and Robert is your mothers brother, if its that fault and the light should extinguish from the dash AFTER starting?

It is worth checking the battery with a tester both before and during it running, should read something like 12.x volts beforehand and probably something like 14.x while the car is running, no lights on etc? (confirming the aternator charging it?)

Not quiet sure duct tape all of the place didnt really want to take much away until have new parts as at the moment its still kind of doing its job cant do without this car at min. Previous owner definitely knew about it. Yes just looked and battery does illuminate on dash..? I'll have a check of alternator wiring if I can see at 5.30am when ill be up haha :(

Hiya

Sorry for causing any misunderstanding, the battery should come up on dash on start, but extinguishes as part of the starting procedure so all our cars do it.

If it stays on however then you have the same fault many of us have had.

https://www.google.co.uk/#q=skoda+fabia+alternator+load+signal+wire&safe=off

THIS may be the guide that can help IF its the same fault...its really not difficult and any moderately competent person can fix it....

...and the light that stays on is as mentioned there, traction/esp NOT battery.......but this is just to mislead you !

Checked it all. All wires are fine but found the clip that holds to the alternator is broken! Its been sitting where it should be not quite connected fully as clip doesn't lock in place. Need to find myself a new one now. Thank you guys :)

Has it got a special name haha or just scrap yard job because its only the connection. .. ?

You could try TPS in derby to see if you can get just the connector.
