Citigo Greentech or Fabia 1.2 Greenline? Opinion?

Featured Replies

Good evening people.

My wife has a 1.2 Tsi Fabia Scout which she's definitely part-exing with local Dealership or selling. Either way it's going as she wants better mpg. It's a 50 mile round-trip with 10% A road and 90% motorway/dual carriageway. She's currently getting 44mpg.

I'm leaning towards the Citigo Greentech, whilst she's thinking 1.2tdi Greenline. I've had a huge read-up of the threads on here and opinion would appear to be divided?!

Does the Citigo, if driven carefully attain close to the Fabia or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Has anyone been in the same boat, chosen either and regretted it?!

Thoughts people - before I make the dealership buy it off her and she has my little Fab 1.2 htp!!!

:)

I'd get the Citigo if it's big enough. More modern car, cheaper fuel, quieter engine. My mum has one and averaged 64MPG on a recent 280 mile trip without trying.

Possibly get a biased opinion on this forum tbh...

I would say take both out for a test drive and decide that way.

Only way to be sure.

My 2p anyway, is get the Citigo, stacks better :D

we have both a citigo elegance 75 greentech and a fabia GLII estate

both have good and bad points and the driving for both to get best economy is different

I have got 92mpg out of my GLII on a 190 mile run, but around town on shorter runs the citigo can beat it fairly easily due to the GLII taking longer to warm up and the hit of the DPF on mpg, average tank on tank the GLII is about 62-65mpg, I have had it for 18 months and 24,000 miles

the citigo we have only had since 1st September and the best we have got over a tank is 57mpg, short runs it is great, warms up really quick, and is great around town, I have not tried it on the 190 mile run yet

driven more enthustically the GLII you have to go some to get less than 45-50mpg, the citigo is nearer 40mpg

driving I find the citigo more fun and easier to drive, the GLII I find feels more solid and planted on the road but the steering heavier

fabia has more space in the back and boot, but citigo seems lighter and more roomy in the front

both have a similar running cost of about 11p / mile, stop start makes a fair difference if in traffic but if you are dual carriageway / motorway not much

GLII economy is badly affected by speed over 65mph and hills, and also to  lesser extent tyre pressure

if as you appear to do more motorway work than town the GLII is the better choice from my experience, it has better pulling power on the motorway, BUT the engine is a lot noisier, also the GLII has more safety features for motorway work

problem is very few dealers have GLII for you to test drive ,so it will be difficult for you to compare the two

I've had both.

2010 Fabia GL2 and 2012 Citigo Elegance Greentec.

Priorities:

Fun = Citigo

Space/family = Fabia.

It's that simple in my opinion.

Running costs are pretty well matched.

Very little in it really. Initial purchase price (if buying new) probably puts overall cost of ownership in favour of the Citigo. The Fabia Greenline II is definitely the better car on the motorway as it has much more torque and cruise control as standard. The Citigo has very tidy handling, is more entertaining to drive and warms up extremely rapidly, whereas the Greenline takes ages so the Citigo is probably the better alrounder. You can have fun in the Greenline but you'll see the fuel economy plummet  The Fabia has a pretty decent equipment level as standard and has a better stereo

biggest minor annoyances with the citigo are

  • the number of switches etc not lit at night (door mirror control, light switches etc)
  • no single push up and down on the electric windows, you have to keep the button pushed to take the window right up/down
  • on 3 door the seat belts are a long way back
  • no boot light
  • no foot rest for you left foot
  • PID is 3-5mpg optimistic on mpg
  • tiny symbols on little lcd in speedo
  • no MDI (but made up for by PID)

pluses over GLII

  • heated seats
  • PID
  • handy little hooks in boot for carrier bags so shopping don't fall over in boot (sounds little but so useful)
  • lovely quiet engine, with fantastic noise over 4k rpm

44 mpg!!

Shocking. I'd get the Citigo :)

@bluecar1 the Fabia has the flip out hooks in the boot -I call them 'curry clips' (so the take away doesn't fall over).

My PID is pretty much sopt on. I'd agree about the other flaws though.

That said, in the citigo you can "enjoy yourself" and still get 50+mpg. Drive sensibly and the MPG shoots up.

Wow!  Thanks loads for all the replies people!  Loads of solid figures and food for thought.  I'm now feeling the Citigo and have called up on the 0% Finance deal only to find that my dealer can't supply a GreenTech Elegance until February next year!!!  Noooo!  On;y the Sports left available - which my wifey doesn't like the look of!

Question - is it worth me hanging out for the 75bhp for the motorway or will the 60bhp suffice?  I think I'd rather know there was something in the tank for evasive action?

If you don't rev the nuts off it both engines are the same.

Up to around 4,000-5,000rpm both are identical, then the 75ps reaches it's peak power in the red on the rev gauge.

Dont let engine variant be a deciding factor

Also the sport can be destickerred if that's what she doesn't like about them

@BossFox:My wife won't rev the nuts off it at all.

@Damo:  Didn't think of that fella!  :)

Shows how much more efficient the Rapid is than the Fabia; I'd get around 50mpg on a similar journey if I wasn't speeding.

No point in getting the 75PS and paying more for it then in my opinion.

The Rapid probably has better aerodynamics and unlike the Scout is not carting round a complete set of body cladding.

Before you even mention driving style.

Going a little OT here -isn't the Rapid lighter than the Fabia as well. One thing I cannot fathom is that the Octavia III gets better figures than the Rapid when both have the 1.6 TDI fitted, I have double checked this with Skoda and it is the same engine.

Welcome to my world!

I'm pretty tempted by the Sport though I have to say.  There doesn't seem to be enough of a benefit between the GreenTech 60 and 75 to warrant waiting!

There isn't a Greentech Sport though, is there?

Sorry my bad. I meant between the stock 60bhp and a 75bhp GreenTech. Be good if there was a GreenTech Sport though?! Although I think the only discernible difference is 5mpg and the Stop/Start function?

We have a 75 Greentech and I've also driven the 60ps Greentech extensively -there is very little in it, I wouldn't feel disappointed with the 60 at all.

If there is a difference id say weight and gear ratios.

Isnt the Octy on MQB while the Rapid is base on the "old" fabia chassis

Octavia is indeed MQB, but Rapid is on the same platform as the current VW and Seat Ibiza (not the Fabia which is older)

the delay of feb is probably optimistic, my daughter ordered a 60 greentech beginning of September, projected date for that is mid feb, you are 6 weeks later so I would say expect a late march delivery

there are also no cancelled orders in the system unlike the fabia's so little chance of getting one early, also if you have the sport you have no chance of adding any extra's if you want them, the entertainment pack with speaker upgrade is well worth it and the sport is missing some of the options in the elegance greentech

look at the spec then decide if a wait is a better idea to get exactly what you want
