This has been argued to death already, and people have their own opinions, but any advice on tyres for a 2009 Diesel VRS. The ones on the front at the moment are cheapos and the grip is terrible. 

Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance come in reasonably priced and the reviews are very good.

Just stuck some Conti Sport Contact 5's on the front of my 10 month old Blackline, thing ate the OEM Sport Contact 2's after 9k miles which was disappointing, no more than 3mm across (so debateably may have seen me through another 1-2k legally) dont hammer the car either.

Was thinking Eagle F1 assymetric 2's or Michelin PS3's but dont really like mixing brands; bit anal like that.

Highly recommend Best Buy Tyres on line; fuss free and saved me a good 65/70 quid saving on what my usual place were able to do them for.

I put Goodyear efficient grip performance after the SC2 needed replacing after 12k. Had them for about 4k now and road noise is better and fuel is slightly better. However handling is not as good. I guess you can't have noise, economy, durability and handling all improve at the same time.

Hankook ventus 12 evo or whatever.  Low noise, good grip and feel.

Previous set lasted 35,000.  A puncture, with a couple of mm to go, went for new set as winter is looming.

£90 each fitted for 225/45x17 94Y.

Trying Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance right now so can't speak for longevity. MPG is definitely up a little, noise is down quite a bit.

 

Grippy but lack bite on the road, hard to describe but a bit squishier than the previosu Maxxis MAV1 I had which gripped and dug in like the devil but were as loud as a loud thing.

Looked at best buy tyres. Will probably go there as theyre cheaper than etyres who I've used the last 2/3 tyre changes.

As I've said in other threads, my original Conti SC2's lasted for 31k (for the first two) and 43k for the second 2.

I now have SC5's all around. On top of offering excellent grip & low road noise they are wearing at a similar rate. So the first 2 I got were on the back for 12k miles and are now on the front and have so much tread left.

For those reason I only use and recommend Conti's.

The European tyre label doesn't have a grip rating. I suspect you are thinking of the wet braking rating? A rather different thing...

Correct, well spotted. Silly assumption to think that wet braking and general grip are related!

That's a ridiculous difference. Unless ChrisRs only drives on the Nurburgring. 

More than likely one is petrol the other is diesel. Diesels eat front tyres. My last set i tried Pirelli, which have lasted 13000. Now under 2mm and at a loss of what to put on next???

Ended up with Michelin PS3s on. Really happy with them so far. Grip on hill starts in the wet is phenomenal.

I replaced my Contis with Michelin PS3s........but my car is petrol, be interesting to see how many miles you get out of them!!! I used to get about 18,000miles out of a set of Michelins on my Mondeo ST TDCI (same size tyre as the Octy).......but I've seen many other threads where is seems the diesel vrS is much harder on tyres, especially the fronts for obvious reasons!

I've done 6300 miles since replacing my Conti 5s & they are on the wear bars in the center of both tyres. I wouldn't have noticed if the garage hadn't told me... I don't generally drive my car hard, though I do tend to pull away relatively quickly sometimes. Even so, just over 6k miles for a set of tyres is pretty crappy IMO. 

 

Interested to hear how the Eagle F1s or PS3s are performing for those with a CR vRS. I can't imagine they'd be any worse than the Contis!

Probably done 7 to 8k on my ps3 and I drive fairly hard down a roads, overtaking etc and I would say they're half worn. They're a great tyre.

At tyre time next I'll be looking at either PS3s (again, currently on my summer set), Eagle F1 Assy2 or the Hankook V12 which is getting a rave review. If I am feeling flush I'll have some PIlot Supersport.

Just goes to show everybody's different Chris, whether it's journey type, mileage, driving style. I changed the (original) Continental Eco Contact on the back of my wife's Golf at 80+k miles and ONLY because they'd sawtoothed. There was still over 4mm left on them and she could still have had them on the car at 106k or whatever is on it now. All she really did with the car was drive 50 miles up the M1 and back down in the other direction every day.

In my experience, Goodyear F1 Assymetric 2's are the best tyres I've ever run.

 

On this motor, I have Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's, which are very poor in comparison. Noisy, and poor traction (very difficult to make brisk progress in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears on a even slightly damp road).

 

Goodyear EfficientGrip, whilst quite quiet and reasonably long-lasting, offered mediocre grip and absolutely the worst snow/ice performance I have ever experienced from a tyre in my life (yes, I know they aren't winter tyres).

 

Go for the F1 AS2 - they really are head and shoulders above the rest, even if you might end up paying a little more for them. Once you've bought them, most other road tyres will seem quite ordinary.

i'd suggest having your tracking etc looked at. Thats is terrible mileage. I got more than double from a set of falken 914's on my vrs derv. 

 

Fr0d - are you talking the efficient grip or efficient grip performance? Two completely different tyres

I swore blindly by goodyear eagle f1's for years, I went through 3 sets on my st and they were simply the best tyre ive ever came across for a car.

sadly they discontinued them

 

I tried the good year efficient grip and was left a bit disappointed

 

I thought id replace my tyres with ps3's I run Michelin on nearly all my bikes and cant speak highly enough of them for two wheels but they were bloody expensive

 

I then stumbled across verdiestein's or however the **** you spell it. fantastic tyres....

 

in the dry they are as good as goodyear eagle F1's in the wet they aren't as good but they were 30 quid a corner cheaper. there wasn't much in it

 

if money was no object id go for ps3's but personally id go for the tyre that is impossible to spell

I too need 4 new tyres, with a remap on my vrs its running at 300 pounds of torque and with my insistence that I cannot be doing with traction control I need a tyre that will last. can anyone recommend me a tyre that wont wear out like a rubber on the end of a pencil. if not il go with my vvviiersideten thingys

Anyone tried the Uniroyal Rainsport 3 yet? I have the Rainsport 2's on and they are pretty good but I don't drive with my brain out. I don't drive like miss daisy either though.

Conti SportContact 5, lasted nearly 15K, superb on wet and dry.

Michelin PS3s - I'm 10k in on my set and they are absolutely phenomenal. The improvement in grip, and particularly steering feel is excellent. I recently had to emergency stop in the wet and the braking grip is astonishing. If I'd had normal tyres on I would hit the car in front!
