New battery

Featured Replies

Well, the new battery arrived this week and, having unwrapped it today, I was surprised to see how much shorter (i.e. less long rather than less high) it is. As far as I can tell it's the right one for my 1.6 FSi - Varta D15 (027).

Anyway, I had a hand written note in the box with the battery saying 'remove vent plugs'. The only part of the battery that looks removeable is a panel that runs the length of the battery and, one imagines. would reveal six holes for topping up. However, I had assumed that topping up batteries was a practice that had died out and that modern batteries were sealed for life units. Taking this panel off the battery just seems wrong. Certainly, there's no mention of this in Varta's installation guide.

I'll contact the outfit that sold it to me tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else had any ideas.

Cheers.

Are there any small round vent plugs on the side of the battery top. In some applications these have a little tube attached to vent any gasses away from the battery.

Thanks Radders. I know what you mean but no there aren't. However, whilst examining the battery for these I realised that what I had previously taken to be small round mouldings on either end of the panel mentioned above were actually removeable plugs!

So, happy days, I can get on and fit it

It would appear my celebrations were a little premature :rain:

The battery is fitted and the car starts; the radio is fine as is the alarm; and, I've reset the one-touch window operation. Also, set the clock to the correct time!

However, the warning lights for the airbag; tyre pressure monitoring system and the ESP system all remain lit. I've tried pressing the ESP button and the TPM button to no avail.

Any ideas? I just disconnected and reconnected within about 5 minutes. All the cables previously attached to the battery still are.

Just found a useful tip elsewhere on this site. Going out for a quick spin should fix it. Now where'd I put the key....

Er, happys days are here again

you sure 027 is correct size?

When I bought a new battery I was looking for a 093 battery but at the end of the day I just looked for the correct measurements rather than just what certain sites recommend, they are often wrong

The system needs a couple of rotations of the wheels to reset the sensors on each wheel, as abs, esp and tpms all use the same sensors that is why they all light up

Well I certainly hope its right! I see no reason for multiple sites to list the wrong type (although I suppose they could be sharing the same data). A local retailer was going to sell me the same item so...

On checking the handbook it does refer to the warning light issue.

Yes those are what I meant. Sometime it hard to describe when cannot actually see the item.
