octavia vrs 2 loud noise

Featured Replies

Hi folks. Looking for some advice please. I have a skoda octavia vrs 2. 3.5 years old. Its first MOT was in April when I had to get a service just filters/ oil and 4 new tyres and also front discs and pads with wheel allignment on completion. Due to the expense of all this I had no option but to purchase cheap tyres to keep me legal. After all the work was done I had to drive 500 miles to glasgow for work. About 5 miles in once I got up to speed I became aware of a loud droning noise. From about 40mph upwards. This noise was present with the clutch dipped and neutral selected. The noise is even more apperent at 70+. With it being a sunday back in april I could not nip back to the garage so with my little mechanical experience I jacked up the car to check the wheel bearings for any movement for which there was none. A few phone calls later and all the advice forced me to believe it was the cheap tyres. I have put up with this noise from april until saturday 15000 mls when I finally purchased new tyres. Guess what noise is still there with wheel bearing movement checked again and is correct. Hopefully someone on here can point me in the right direction. Any and all advice would be appreciated as im stuck. :-)

Could be the garage made a mess of the alignment!

I was almost certain it was going to be tyre noise, but now..................

Get that alignment checked as Anderton suggests. Got to be that now surely, either that or you are just plain damned unlucky again.?

On saying that, what was the wear pattern on the cheapo tyres?

You purchased a well known brand this time?

Hey guys thanks for the comments. The centre of both the tyres were worn with possibly slightly more on the outside of the passengers tyre. But overall I would think that it was a pretty even and acceptable wear. Can the tracking be out tyrewear be even? :-)

Still what you would class as bidget tyres again this time but they are a completely different tread pattern.

Got the car booked in for friday. Will update on completion. :-)

I ended buying Goodyear Efficiency Performance tyres pretty much on the basis that they were quiet earlier this year. Previous tyres were upper budget and gave great grip but were really noisy.

Just put the wheels off my mates A4 on the car and noise is just the same. Is there any chance that back in april when the front disks were changed that it could of upset anything. Maybe even the bearings? Can bearings me making that noise for 15k mls and still show no signs of movement in the front wheel.

As I said the car is going into the garage on friday but really dont want him to play guess the part.

Any help or past experiences would be greatly appreciated folks. :-)

Ok folks. Car been in the garage and they said the best bet would be drivers front wheel bearing. Im struggling to understand why and how it can of been making this noise for 15k mls and not destroyed itsself. Hope someone else has experienced this before I spend the money to get this changed. Any and all ideas would be extremely helpful folks. :-)

Modern bearings don't 'wobble' when shot and don't normally disintegrate like in th olden days!

my front wheel bearing went after 3'Yrs on both my mk1 and mk2
