Pouring warm/hot water over frozen windscreen

Featured Replies

I was told by a windscreen fitter never to pour hot water onto a frozen screen as it can damage it, i just scrape off and wait for the engine heat to clear the screen.

He was probably refering to boiling water...Its perfectly safe with warm water

But heyho......its your choice...Spend ages scraping and messing about with crappy de ice products or do it in seconds safely

I'll stick to my method thanks

I use warm water, never boiling and never had a problem yet. Usually its the water thats in the kettle that had boiled 2 hours previous when I made a cup of coffee, of if thats not enough I get it from the hot tap whilst its running luke warm.

You can't beat having a pair of large jugs to hand :)

Tepid water and a squeegee is much faster than a scraper, and doesn't leave the smears of de-icer

I hate using de-icer mists up on the inside :(

I would like to try that pre-icer tho sounds pretty cool

Pre- icer and ive been covering front windscreen with a blanket. Not had to de ice yet and been leaving at 6am most days. Not known of anyone who pours hot water on to their windows so don't know if it is bad but I'd never risk the chances just incase it did happen :)

I put a bath towel over the night before.. I have used lukewarm water before, did the job..

Watched a neighbour try and be smart once, came out with a freshly boiled kettle, straight on the the windscreen of his Sierra.

They do go bang somewhat. ;)

Never really in a rush, so engine on, front and back demist on, remove excess snow/ice, spray windows with concentrated screen wash (the -25 degrees one), squeegee, repeat if needed. Job done, in car, stereo on whilst the de-mist finishes.

I use water from a hose pipe. It melts the ice suprisingly quickly

Works with cold water, as even cold water is hotter than ice so it'll melt it.

Personally I just mix in de-icer to my washer fluid and scoosh them on for a few seconds and the wipers do the "scraping"

Or at least I use to until I bought a Ford. Woo heated front window!

I think I am paranoid about wasting fuel, so my engine isn't started until the car is ready to go. :)   Plus I think the car warms up more efficiently on the move too.

Cars do heat up quicker if driven straight away but I doubt the effects would be notable on modern engines. Taxis and vans especially as they're sitting on idle quite often

The nightshift staff do it all the time at my work, nip out 10mins before day staff come in and turn the cars on to heat them up for going home. When coming in, even f the cars have been sitting for 10mins you can still see the smoke out of the exhausts, unlike if you drive for 10mins the exhaust gases tend to become alot less visible.

Have been using lukewarm water from the tap for 30 years, I have never had a problem.....don't do scraping!

-2*oC here just now,

if it is -5*oC or lower in the morning then pouring warm water might or might not be OK.

If the Ambient temp was to stay below freezing for the whole day, then you need to consider if Water Pouring is the best way to de-ice.

Night Before Sprayed on windows, a wipe over with a gloved hand and you are fit to go.

Flask of Warm water in the vehicle incase it is needed on days where slush is being thrown up,

and you are in a possibly in better or safer position, or just to clean the glass when it warms up later, if it does.

(Or just for coming home again later when things are freezing again maybe..

Freezing Doors Seals might need warm water to get your doors open again if they are wet from your mornings Warm Water.)

EDIT,  22nd,  6.10am  -4*oC

I'm sick of having scratched screens from using ice scrapers so now just use a jug of luke warm water and not had a problem apart from when i did it to my little corsa and it put 3 big cracks in it but it had had a roof tile drop on screen so it was knackered and i was actually taking it to work to have a new screen fitted

I use luke warm water here too. Defrosts the outside and the ****ing inside seeing as I have a Fabia!

Lock mine in the garage at night. No ice issues!

If I have to though I'll use warm water. Done this for 9 years and never cracked a screen.

I've always used slightly warm water and never had any issues.

Although now the LEAF pre-heats and the other half's car lives in the garage.

What with the heated screen on the Yeti I've not had the hassle for a few years.

I'd never start the car and warm it up before driving though, they warm up noticably faster on the move.

Tepid/warm water every time, although I now have a garage, it's her problem now!

Tepid water here

Watched my friend make his rear window explode on his cossie by spraying it with cold water in summer once, only time I've seen a window break using water lol

Should be fine with a decent scraper.

I've used the warm water technique as cold as -12c. It still worked perfectly.

However there would come a point where refreezing would become a problem when pouring warm water......I imagine at -20c and below the warm water technique would not work.

Should be fine with a decent scraper.

i use a stanley knife blade to scrape mine off, never scratched any glass yet to date, automotive glass is a lot tougher than people give it credit for..

on the felicia its quite common to get frozen locks so you cant even get in the damned thing too.  a good spray of wd40 in the locks helps, normally stick the can in a bowl of hot water for 5 mins first to heat it

Park it in the garage. Simples ;)

Park it in the garage. Simples ;)

Most people don't have that option

BUT

Do have access to warm water

Booke23,

i will tell you when refreezing can be a problem,

the likes of this morning @ 5 am as i watched a neighbour using warm water @ -4.5 *oC

She did it yesterday morning as well, practice for today because she has never owned a car before, and wanted to know if

it was OK, she was told the De-icer was nasty.

then she never went anyplace or drove the car yesterday, and the temp stayed around freezing all day,

Thawed a little in the sun, then froze hard again last night.

I helped them out with my deicer to get the nice fresh ice off the windows, and get the doors & lock unfrozen.

The inside was taking quite  a while to get the ice of the windscreen, so i did what sometimes needs doing,

sprayed de-icer on it, to get things moving. (she will clean and polish the inside glass later.)

Temp now at 9.am is still -3*oC

Use warm water, use wipers, use the heater,  and drive away, probably not a problem.

Park where it is not going to be at freezing all day in the shade etc.

Get the car dry inside before you park up again, A/C on while driving if it works,

remove wet mats, cloths, windscreen pads & clothing,

put in a small container of salt, with a pierced lid,  or a Moisture absorbing pack, & the worlds is wonderful.

I have also used warm water at very low temperatures, often below -10*0c,  often because that was all that was available.

but then driving off and then into even colder temperatures can be a problem,

and several applications in a day, several days, or weeks can cause issues if the temp is always staying below 0*oC.

as a quick fix, if it works do it.

If temps are not staying low for the rest of the day, then there is less if no problems.

But sometimes peoples brain need switched into action.
