Biggest and strongest battery for a PD140?

Featured Replies

I've tried a search to no avail.

Our 5 year old Octavia Scout TDi PD140 only just caught this morning after a heavy frost signalling that the battery is about done.

I remember reading that Skoda went through a period of fitting lower spec batteries to their cars as a bit of a cost saving exercice.

As a result the battery is quite a bit smaller than the space allocated for it.

I'd like to fit the biggest battery I can.

Does anyone have any advice on a high spec battery that will fill the available space?

Something like the Bosch S5 if you want to go high-end - 77Ah and 780A CCA.

Battery plate will take upto 278mm & width 175mm IIRC.

OEM spec should be 70Ah and 570A cold crank, again IIRC. They do tend to differ from car-to-car though - seems to depend what the factory had at build time!

Hope that helps. FWIW, I have the mid-range Halfords one in mine and it's been absolutely spot-on.

I have a Varta battery which is a decent make and gives good cranking power. :)

I have the Bosch S5 096 780A 77a/h battery in my VRS CR. Fits fine and plenty cranking power. It was £80 from www.justcarbatteries.co.uk

Stick with it, Ive had a few poor starts on the Scout & a new battery made no difference, only does it occasionally so until more frequent I wont worry but you might just have the same. It starts quite quickly but the starter revs seem to fall away just before it fires

That's interesting.

I have the exact same symptoms you describe.

The starter motor sounds as though it is just about to stall at the exact same point the engine fires up.

Almost as though if the engine didn't fire at that point then the starter motor would simply stall and click.

I just assumed that the battery was on its way out, with it being 5 years old now.

I'm very particular with the electrical load on my cars (almost an OCD) to the point I never turn on any electrical load (lights, radio, climate etc.) until the engine is running (auto lights turned off), and everything is turned off before the engine is cut.

My 12 year old diesel Peugeot 306 still had the original battery on it when I sold it so I was suprised the other morning when the Scout seemed to be struggling...

I put a Bosch S5 in mine and it cured all starting issues. It was also nearly 5 years old.

My battery was 3.5 years old which wasn't good but as car was over 80,000 miles I assumed it was reosnable, as I said made no difference

Best just wait & see, Ive had once every 2-3 weeks for about 6 months, temperature seems to make no difference, the last few frosty mornings have been fine

I'll monitor it for a few more days then.

I'm on paternity leave until Wednesday next week, after that the wife will be using the Scout to ferry our two kids around so reliability is my number one priority here.

The last thing I want is to discover she's stuck somewhere with a dead battery.

It seems that eurocarparts ship out the same day so if I do need one then I can make the decision early next week, in which case an S5 will be on the list!

Just out of curiosity, what do I do with the old battery?

Am I able to take it to the local tip to be recycled?

They usually have a special area for batteries. Batteries are well worth recycling so they're usually keen to get them.

If you have a local scrappie you may get a couple of quid for it

I've just had a Varta E44 77ah 780A 12v from eBay for £76.98 delivered and it comes with a 5yr warranty, the car starts like a dream first crank bang it's off!

My old man also got me £7.50 for the old one at the scrappy, so the new battery has only cost me £69.48 in theory!

I purchased this the other week and it fits perfectly, is slightly higher Amps than the standard one and made a large difference in starting than with old original job.

Wow, £200!?

I had around £100 in my head so to discover the Bosch S5 which is a higher spec than OEM could be had for £80 I was quite suprised.

I don't know why but £200 seems too much of a stretch, but then if it lasts twice as long it could prove to be a worthwhile investment...

i've spent the cash because im running audio and compete nationaly.

But, unlike a lot of batteries they do last longer than the cheaper batteries. These are a different technology to the cheaper batteries too.

As I said, look at Odesy and Banner aswell. Banner are budget of the higher end batteries people use for audio and the top spec battery for the Octavia is around £150

Mine still has it's original battery, 2006 and 606,000kms.

Hi Silver,

did you get sorted with a battery. The scout keeps giving the low battery boing if I leave the boot lid open for a few mins.

The Varta E44 type 096 is £68.75 delivered from JCB. Im a bit wary or ordering online after carparts4less sent me a battery that was too big for the SLK. I had a nightmare trying to return it.

Hi Mark,

I decided to leave it, now the weather has warmed up the car starts absolutely fine.

I think I might be in the same position as Stuart in post #5?

I don't get the 'low battery' bong though so I suspect your battery may well be on it's way out?

One thing is for sure I've read nothing but good things on the Bosch S5 so will likely head down this route when winter comes back around.

I got the Varta E38, 74Ah - 750 start power.

My 2010 2.0L CR diesel Scout is coming up for its 4th birthday.  It spends the majority of its life doing short journeys.  I've noticed over the past few weeks that the car cranks slowly for its first start of the day, but it's still 100% reliable and always starts within a couple of seconds.  However, it's quite disconcerting, as the crank speed is sufficiently slow that I think it's not going to start.  This morning, I noticed the same slow cranking behaviour, but this time the glow plug light came back on for about 3 or 4 seconds after the car started, then went out.  The car ran fine and it started happily an hour later, with normal speed cranking and without the glow plug symptom.

Any ideas on what these symptoms suggest, before I go and throw NZ$200 at a replacement battery?

Low battery voltage will cause errors & weird happenings at start up.

Do a voltage test when you start - IIRC it's about 11.2V.  If you scan with VCDS you'll find you have a truckload of "low volt" error codes.

Buy a 780cca Bosch or Varta (same battery).

If you were up near Tauranga I could send you to a mate.  He's a wheel alignment specialist but does batteries as well I think.

Just to update this thread, I never replaced the battery in the end.

The issue still persists though. One quite hot day the other week I turned off the engine and then attempted to restart it a few minutes later. The start motor turned for a second then stopped completely for another second, then began turning again and the car started.

On cold starts the starter motor turns fine then the cranking speed drops right away and the engine catches.

The car always starts, it's just a little disconcerting because it really sounds as though it won't. It's been like this for over a year now so I'm fairly certain it's not the battery.

Are the starter motors under-specced as with the batteries on some Octavia's?
