is the roomster for the chop

Featured Replies

I've been doing a bit of personal research on this & found the following out;-

1. The Roomster IS for the chop as it is, due to poor sales (%) & the fact it has two different platforms to make (front end Fabia, back axle Octavia/Golf).

2. Read on various newspaper/web articles of interviews with Skoda/VW top brass, & they all say that for Skoda that in the long term a small MPV & a big MPV, as well as a bigger SUV will be needed in the range.

3. VW already has a small SUV & a large SUV, & it has 3 MPVs (Golf Plus, Touran, Sharan). Skoda has Roomster, & Yeti, however an extended seven seater Yeti was launched at a recent China car show.

4. VW has just put on sale the new Golf Plus, which is rebadged the SV (Sport Van), which is based on the Golf MKVII, but is 5 inches longer than the Golf Plus it replaces!

Conclusion:- I think that VW will ditch the Touran & just have the new Golf SV, & a New Sharan, then re-badge those for Skoda. Or it might rebadge the Commercial based Caddy-Life?, which is a bit basic on the suspension!

The Caddy is long overdue for replacement.. I believe the new Roomster will be twinned with a replacement for the Caddy and will be built in Poland along with the VW version.

Bit of a shame the Roomster will lose it's uniqueness but it should mean the new Roomster will have a more powerful engine range and possibly a 4wd option,

An updated Caddy with Roomster's varioflex seats and a 1.0 or 1.2TSI engine?

Bring it on!

The Roomster will be bigger & longer than it already is!!!

The Caddy is made in short & long wheel base, short is 4.406m, with long (Maxi) 4.876m long!!

The Caddy is made in Domestic (Life) trim in short & long, but only available in the long (Maxi) version in the UK!

The VW Golf SV is only 4.338m long which is nearer to the Roomsters 4.214m length.

By the way the Caddy is only available in UK in Diesel engines (all variants), with 4Motion being a current UK option.

Unless they do a Polo van replacement, I think that the next "Roomster" will be bigger, with the Yeti filling the small size, then the Roomster, followed by the new bigger SUV (Toureg based) & finaly a big MPV (Sharan based?)

Found this out which is where I think other people have been finding out info from:-

Basically they state that the new Roomster will be based on & made at the Polish Poznan plant which makes the VW Caddy. The new Roomster will be made as from May 2015. The new Roomster will be bigger & more expensive, & could carry over features from the Caddy such as sliding rear doors, & 4wd! As they state that the Roomster is the least demanded model, expect to see just a re-badge job!

However................the Caddy is based on the VW Touran platform with VW Golf MKV front suspension.

There are two wheelbase lengths, Short = 4.406m long, Maxi = 4.876m long! The height is also big at 1.831m!!

Currently a Roomster is 4.214m long by 1.607m,

the Yeti is 4.222m long by 1.645m high

& the new VW Golf SV is 4.338m long by 1.578m high.

The Caddy is made in the Domestic trims such as Comfort line, Highline, etc. etc. & in both short & long wheelbases & with 4wd, but only the Maxi life is available over here with none of the short wheelbase versions!

Here is a prototype VW Polo 'van':

If they could design the Roomster a little like this without sacrifying any space, keepthe varioflex seating, fit that new frugal 1.0TSi engine (<100g/l CO2) that's going in the new 2014 Polo and add a little refinement to the cabin and ride, they'd be onto a winner, IMO.

One of the big selling points for the Roomster is that it is light and airy with pretty good all round visibility.  Oh, and it's DIFFERENT.  Why would we want to dumb it down to the same kind of euro box that everybody else makes?  As for engines, the last thing I want is a miniscule petrol engine you have to rev the guts out of.  You can't beat a good big diesel.

I agree with you, interesting car design is a good thing, this is bourne out by the Yeti whom most would describe as 'Quirky' 'Fun' and thus appealing. The trouble is most people tend to describe the Roomster as 'Ugly' - it's subjective of course. I've no problem with buying a dull car, or a quirky car, but if I consider it ugly I'd think again. I think this is what has held back Roomster sales as otherwise it's a great package.

Don't discount the new small petrols. My Yeti has a 1.2TSi and it is an incredible engine - very flexible, smooth, frugal and very quite. It doesn't need heavy reving to keep up the pace, but if you do rev it you'd be very surprised to know it's just 1.2litres under the bonnet. A great engine. It only lacks the low down torque you may require if you were needing to tow a horse box or whatever. If the new VW 1.0TSi is similar to the 1.2TSi it'll be a perfect match for a car the size of the Roomster - we'll have to wait and see what it's like when it arrives in the Polo later in the year.

If they do update the Roomster I hope it doesn't grow in size and thus needing bigger engines, bigger tyres and therefore bigger costs...

Much as we love the Roomster, we have to acknowledge we are in a minority.

Skoda is a mass producer of cars and needs to make Euro Boxes that appeal to everybody else in order to stay in business.

You can't beat a good big diesel.

Agreed.  IMO the last good, big diesel was the Euro4 (non-DPF) 1.9TDI.  But with the arrival of Euro5 and DPFs, diesels have become complicated and not suited to predominantly urban use.

On the other hand, the 1.2TSI is a cracker of an engine with diesel-like power delivery.  And of course, it doesn't have a DPF.  So after 20 years of diesel ownership, my next car will be petrol.

Oh, and whatever they come up with the number 1 requirement is it can take the internal bike holder so two bikes can fit inside, standing upright, without having to faff about lowering saddles etc. The Yeti and Roomster and perfect in this respect. :)  The Fabia and Octavia still accept the bike holder but are less useful as the roof is too low and you have to drop saddle :(

Actually, that is the most important thing in any car ever :D

Will be good if the new Roomster is slightly longer and then it won't be such a squeeze..

I don't find looks sell me a car over practicability. I owned an ugly bug Multipla until I chopped it in for the Roomie 15 months ago. My wife and I went into a Skoda dealers to buy a Yeti and came out buying the Roomie - it seemed more spacious inside and very airy with the panoramic roof. I made the right choice and have never regretted it although I do yearn for the Multipla for the sixth seat.

Just spoken to someone in the know (in the trade) and Skoda have sadly not given any indication that they are replacing the Roomster. Doesnt appear to be a replacement on the horizon, at this time...Seem to be placing the emphasis on the 7 seater Yeti thats coming later this year..Know what you mean about the Multipla, odd looking but very comfortable, raised driving position and a full 6 seater...Fiat like Skoda seemed embarrassed by it an it died a death...but was loved by many

I recently took ownership of my second Roomster as well.

I was forced to change my Roomster (manual) for a car with automatic transmission due to an old knee injury.  I, too looked  at all the options before settling for a second Roomster - for exactly the same reasons as AllyMo.

As I've said in other threads, I consider the Roomster by some margin the best car I have ever owned.
