Minor prang equals NCB potentiall shafted! -5yrs!

Featured Replies

Had a very minor prang on Monday night with light damage to both cars Third partys bumper just scuffed and broken fog light lens (09 Focus). I was at fault and i'm not claiming to fix my car.

I'v just had a claim go off my policy then i go and get this put one argh! I pay too much for insurance already being in Liverpool but now i fear that my renewal will become unrealistic as i decided to ring my insurer to see how much my NCB (currently 11 years) will be affected the answer by some very unsure admin guy back to Three years!

Is this the Norm and am i just ****ed now? One minor prang an im now shafted for the next five years.

Do you not pay the little extra for 'Protected NCB'.  ?

Annoyingly not this year.

It rather depends on how your insurance company awards its NCD. Many companies give you maximum discount after 5 years, so it would only take you 2 years to get back to that level. Regardless of the level of discount, your premium is very likely (almost certain) to go up. It might be best to work out what making a claim will cost you, in terms of reduced discount and the increase in premium over the next two years (or whatever the term will be) or paying for the 3rd party's repair out of your own pocket. Don't forget to included the cost of your excess in the calculation.

Thanks, even though its going through the insurance now can i still offer to pay for the repairs directly out of my own pocket?

Ill ring the insurance and find out, Worth a try.

I would have thought that, until such time as your insurance company pays out any money, you should still be in control and be able to change your mind. Be aware, though, that some, but not all, insurance companies will put up the premium anyway, simply because you've had an accident, regardless of whether it's cost them anything. I think the rationale is that you've shown yourself to represent an increased risk. I would avoid any company that takes this view, though.

I had a minor prang too on Wednesday, however I don't believe I was at fault. But luckily I pay for protected NCB so glad for this. As he's trying to claim it was me.

Who hit who?

Why not offer to sort it out of your own pocket? Then it's an accident but not a claim?

Paint repair people are pretty good and even a body shop is cheaper than a 5 year shafting.

" I was at Fault."  post #1

That is not me, but the OP.  I was not in this accident.

Problem is the 3rd Party can make a Claim, after agreeing not to.

& your Insurer says you did not let them know as they say you are required to.

You take your chances,

just as if someone hits you, says they will pay, do not claim, then just mess you about.

Correct i was at fault and have held my hands up saying so. The third party did say at the time he may sort it out away from the insurance but he claimed his wife was in the police (hmmmm) so he had to run it past her first. Anyway the morning after he'd made the decision so his insurer called me.

I have tried calling him and doing my best apologetic approach but he wants to keep it above board and did politely remind him that he will have a claim mark on his insurance for the next five years but hey this is how he wants to play it so fair enough i suppose who am i to argue.

It only lets you off one claim, and typically within 12-24 months.

That might be what your NCD protection is,

because that is not what mine is.  must be the benefit of being old. Or just a case of buying good Insurance maybe.

Even if some say that protected against 1 claim in 12 months or 2 in 3 years is not worth it and the extra cost of Premium

negates its worth.

When your Car Insurance is under £200 for any vehicle and that includes NCD Protection then why would someone not.

Then what is your NC protection George? Because none I've seen cover you for unlimited claims (windscreens excluded).

Its now pretty rare to have any that cover for 2 or 3 claims in a period.

My protected no claims only meant £20 over not protecting so a no brainer

Just having protection on NCD of the likes of 11 years + is enough for many,

just the possibility of making 1 claim can be enough to want to protect part of your NCD.

my NCD has been protected in 3 claims within 3 years, but i have Multicar Cover. Named Drivers & these were Not Driver at fault claims.

I will look at the small print and see just what it says on the Protection..

I also have Cover on vehicles that gains no NCD & uses no NCD & a claim on these did not effect the other Insurance policies as being a claim,

even though declared to the other insurers.

You weren't at fault which is why you didn't lose ncb.

Protected ncb typically also covers in progress non fault class as well so you don't suffer if a claim is still in progress at renewal.

The OP has alerted his insurance company of the accident.

Whether he claims through his insurance is irrelevant now as even if he doesn't it will be listed on his policy.

And declarable when seeking quotes

I haven't done any research into which companies offer multi-claim NCB protection, but the company I have a policy with, More>Than, offers multi-claim NCB protection for the life of the policy (subject to eligibility). Full details can be found on their web site.

There may well be others that do a similar deal, so it's always worth having a good search around.

I have Discovered it is possible to reinstate my NCB if i reimburse the insurer in full for the claim which will also have the added benefit of stating that the insurer paid nothing for the claim then but i'm not sure this works when obtaining a qoute as the potential insurer will still want to know how much the claim cost regardless.

The major downside of this is how much i would have to pay out to do this as insurance claims typically tend to be way higher than they should. As someone has already said it may only take two years to get back to full NCB discount so i'd have to weigh up whether or not its worth it.

The third party has decided to put through a completely unjustified whiplash claim against me now. Unfortunately i've had it on good authority from a solicitor neighbour that my insurer will more than likely pay out but i'm gonna argue it.

I'm fuming now from such bloody dishonesty and lies. But hey i'll get over it.

Do you have legal protection on the policy?

  • Author

On my extremely criptic and complicated cover doccument from the underwriter there it states financial services compensation scheme but ill have to double check with premiym choice in tge morning.

Its times like this junking off the £20 legal cover proves it's a false economy, as is going for the cheapest quote.  Sometimes an extra £50 can make all the difference between a good insurer that'll look after you, and a lazy one that's looking after themselves.

Yes i do have legal protection. Still boils my blood how there is this much corruption as the norm. At least they say theyre trying to clamp down on it.
