HiD Kit.... worth it?

Featured Replies

I got my new Pagid Discs from ECP, arrived yesterday, bang on time for the delivery estimate, well done...

In the box they stuck a mini catalogue, that im just after flicking through.

theres a H4 Ultra HiD Conversion Kit listed for 40quid.

it includes 2x 8000k Xenon bulbs and the balast units.

theres no brand name on it, that i can see,

Am i right in saying you'd also need to get auto levelling units for it, and replace the projectors?

I know thres been many a chat about conversion kits before,

but tbh this is the first time ive actually been looking at a kit, and its seem pretty inexpensive to do...

Perhaps a little too easy . . :wonder:

Its ok, he's from Ireland :)

But on topic, 8000s will be very blue and put out a lot less light than 4300 or 5000s. If I was going down that route, it would be to see better so I'd not go for them on that basis alone.

interesting point that id considered... Cheers Huskoda... Might stick with me Night Breaker Plus bulbs a while longer!

The kits are easy to install. I had 8000k on mine but have recently changed to 6000k as these light up the road better in wet conditions.

Basically yes, you need the projector units and whatnot as not road legal otherwise and may fail an MOT.

I found in the Fabia just putting a HID kit resulting in scattered light and glare. Fitted with some projectors and they are 100x better. I guess the Octavia will be the same having halogen headlights standard.

Definitely, they were never designed for HIDs

Any HID kit should give a nice pattern, whether fitted to projectors or standard headlamps. If they don't, they're faulty. In actual fact, they beam pattern should be more defined than a halogen bulb.

A lot of people think it'll fail the MOT unless you fit the projector headlamps. In actual fact, they will still fail, unless you install the auto level sensors, and headlamp washers. But who's bothered? They take like 5 minutes to plug a standard halogen back in when it comes to the MOT. Most older testers don't even know what HIDs are! Yes, they are classed as illegal, but who cares? The police have better things to do, and I have never heard of anyone getting pulled for HIDs, including myself. I've ran them on my previous car for 4 years.

As for the colour temperature, 4300K is the whitest you can get, and the brightest. The higher the colour temperature, the less lumens (brightness) they output. I personally prefer 6000K, they give a nice blue tinge to the light. I've also used 8000K, these are bluer, but not as good as lighting the road as 6000K.

At the end of the day, an HID kit will dramatically improve the light output, and kits can be bought for £40 or less these days. If you ask a local MOT garage to check/adjust your headlamp aim, you won't blind anyone.

But, if you trust everything you read on the internet, you'll burn the retinas of other drivers, people will crash, and you'll go to prison. Happy days

And the reason is projector headlamps are fitted is just for fun?

apparently not anymore.

auto level and headlight washers are no longer a requirement from what i read (something to do with ballasts/kits not being over a certain power)

also they don't need to be in a projector housing, there are some french cars out there iirc with reflector style setups.

the important thing is beam pattern and to stop glare

I agree with what you say, the police dont seem to car, there are loads of idiots out there with blue lights 8-10k who dont seem to get stopped.

I like 4300k, makes a nice oe light, and as said is the best light output

projectors focus the light pattern in a better way, but i have seen hids in reflector units that work well enough

Yeah I have this and I just lowered the hl level slightly to avoid blinding people but they work a treat, dipped and main beam

Some old lexus's have hid/zenons as standard and dont have projectors or washers iirc.

As there are many hid kits that do give glare, does anyone know of a kit that doesn't.

Try hids direct.com also have an eBay store, few guys on here have used them

Very very good

+1 hidsdirect

Never had issues

seen kits that have an 'r'.

they are meant to have a blanking piece over 1 side to stop the glare/angle of light to oncoming traffic.

My 2001 Audi has factory Bi Xenon headlights, in a standard reflector headlight. It does have fully functional washers though.

you can get retrofit bi xennon, infact the octy needs it as they are dual bulbs.
