Just bought a vRS, few problems though...

Featured Replies

Really hoping you guys can help, done a few searches on all of my problems but the answers are quite varied.

I've bought a 2006 Fabia vRS with 43,000 on the clock for just under 5k, it has full leather interior and CC fitted too.

The only bad thing I've found it that all four discs are down as corroded on the MOT advisory and it also pulls to the left and the steering wheel shakes at high speed (say 60mph +).

I got the car pretty cheap in my eyes knowing I'd need to get all the discs and pads changed, which I'm fine with.

But I've been to two garages today and have mentioned the pulling to the left problem and one mechanic shoved the front wheels with his feet and said that the suspension bushes are knackered and the second mechanic put it on a ramp and checked for "play" in these same bushes with a crowbar and said that the bushes AND arms need replacing.

I've seen that most people buy the Powerflex bushes, just wondering what fitting OEM bushes would be like and also how long you'd think a mechanic would take to replace, I was told £120 with me providing the parts (I estimated this to being 4 hours labour roughly).

Also, as all discs and pads are goosed, would this be a good time to get them done whilst the bushes are being replaced? (not sure if the wheels need to come off for the bushes to be replaced).

Are there any favourable discs or pads to buy? Or just what ever is cheapest on eBay at the time? I am planning on removing some wheels to measure the current sizes of the discs.

Cheers,

Alan

Where abouts are you located?

Where abouts are you located?

Burnley, Lancashire...

Just been quoted the same for front and rear front wishbone bushes with me supplying parts (powerflex) by a local vw specialist but got a mobile mechanic coming on Tuesday to do it for £95

A reasonable price for OEM quality disks and pads is around £100 for parts.

Suspension bushes are cheap, say £15-£25 for OEM or SEAT Ibiza Cupra solid bushes. Powerflex etc are more but easier for DIY fitting.

Hope you sort out the wheel wobble. 60MPH these days isn't very much at all.

Get a 4WA done or at least an alignment check. That might indicate where this pulling to the left is coming from.

Given where you are, I'd take the car into Awesome in Manchester (they're about 2 miles from the Trafford Centre). They KNOW these cars and they'll sort you out with the right bits and pieces. Maybe not the cheapest, but it'll only be £5-£10 per hour more than a smaller independent and I'd trust them to do it properly.

I would have been able to carry out work if you hadn't already sorted it.

Deffo worth an alignment

I did mine not too long back and was a bit annoyed about steering misalignment, slight directional steering. All went away with proper alignment.

They actually mentioned how much of a joy it was to work on too, the bolts weren't stuck etc lol

Wheels balanced too obviously

The 2nd garage are saying the arms and bushes need replaced as they are lazy

Its easier for them to fit complete new arms with bushes rather than removing the old bushes and puttinh new ones in the existing arms

Neither garage would give me any confidence

A lot of people think the brakes are not upto the job (I agree), so if you are sticking with standard discs I recommend spending a bit extra on some better pads.

I would have been able to carry out work if you hadn't already sorted it.

hi Phil, im having similar problems with a 52 plate octavia vrs.

Are you in the Lancashire area? could do without having my pants pulled down, ta Phil (another one).

I'm in the kendal area, but able to travel.. Preston is closer than places I've been for work before, so that would be fine.

Best bet would be to send me a message on here with what problems your having, and any questions.. And go from there?
