Hi Folks,

 

I am in need of a replacement set of tyres for my Vrs Mk2. I have GY Eagle F1's on at the moment and these are fantastic for grip and they give great confidence. The only trouble is that they haven't lasted very long, 12 months to be precise, around 20k miles. I don't drive too hard and I have always had a lot more mile out of other cars (albeit not as powerful).

 

Is there another brand of tyre that gives the confidence of the Eagle F1's but lasts longer (more miles). I have looked at Michelin PS3's but I am not sure if they are worth the extra pennies if they are going to only last the same amount of time as the F1's.

 

Any thoughts?

+1 on the above. Seems the derv has a secret high running cost on tyres.

grrr, seems the derv likes to eat tyres! :)  Is there any cheaper alternatives that give the performance and mileage like the Eagle F1's?

Hankook V12 evo are a good allrounder.

I've had a similar wear problem with my Conti Sport 5's...Fronts only lasted 6000 miles!!

Worse than the Dunlop originals.....and far worse than the Toyo T-1R's I had on prior to the Conti's

I was going to get some F1's next....after the winter when I put the Neptune's back on.

I might reappraise that now...LOL

The best tyres I had , when it comes to how they wear, were the Michellin Pilot Primacy(which had quite a good grip I might add). Now I'm running on GY F1 Asymetric 2, which indeed, are way better as in grip and wet performance, but they do wear faster then the previous Michellin.

So where's the different question? ;)

I don't understand this high tyre wear.  My March 2012 vRS TDi DSG is on 14,500 miles and front tyres have 5mm tread and rears 6mm.  Tyres are Conti Contact 2.  Before anyone asks, I don't exactly hang around when driving the car.  

i also struggle to fathom the differences in tyre wear.

 

The factory fit Conti Sport Contact 2's on our Octavia did 21.5k before needing replaced.

 

Obvioulsy people use their cars differently but to only manage 6k is quite unbelievable! (especially at ~£250 for a pair of tyres!)

Thread title implied a unique question that hasn't been asked 30 times just this week ;)

Im currently looking at tyres too. I've narrowed it down to these:

 

Dunlop Sport Maxx RT

Conti Sport contact 5

Eagle F1 asy 2

 

Out of the 3 the dunlops are cheapest and rated best on the noise/fuel/wet grip levels. No idea how it relates to real life though

You can't have your cake and eat it.

 

If the Goodyear tyres offer you a level of grip that you like then this will be at the expense of longevity.

 

If you want a tyre that is going to last longer then you will have to sacrifice the softer (more grippy) compound for one that is harder (less sticky) but will ultimately last longer.

I know...That's why I'm contemplating Michelins next

I've heard Michelins offer a good balance between the two (grip and life) but never tried them myself.

Hmm I'm thinking more towards the michelins. May give them a try and see how they perform.

Michelin pilot sport 3's seem to get good overall reviews.

Road noise seems to let them down though, not sure that would be a good thing with my Octavia the road noise in the cabin is bad enough now.

But if it performs in wet/dry and gives decent wear then seems best of the bunch.

I hate choosing tyres, even after reading so many reviews there is no definitive tyre of choice.

The dunlops are horrendous for sawtoothing they were also very loud for roadnoise. I had them on from new and they were terrible. Tried Falken 452 and they were very good. Now on Uniroyal rainsport 2 and they are very good also if maybe very slightly noisier than the Falkens.

I've done about 26K km (16K miles) on Conti SC5 and still have left about 1mm front and 2mm back. I've put winters now but SC5 have been superb for last 2 years.

Front tyres appear to be prone to premature wear ONLY on the Diesel vRS/Octavia

Possibly engine weight

Also I might add that UK's asphalt is a disgrace, that sort of compound is not fit for Supermarket parking lots let alone motorways.

 

Many people have complained about stock Dunlop SP01 lasting less then 10K, and they lasted exactly 20K in my Scout, including regular rough mountain driving and all sort of silly push my Scout to the limit road driving, and were superb.

 

Also this how long a tired does last, is a non-starter question, that depends on many specific things, so all these answers should be taken with a pinch of salt, as it depends on how/where/etc drive your car.

I've got the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on mine, so far they have done ~17,000 and are down to 5 mm tread. Have been good for grip and feel in the warm, but I have found them to be lacking in the really cold and wet. It's the trade off you make for getting reasonable mileage out of them. 

I have Winter wheels and tyres for cold and wet....so will never be part of the equation with Summer Tyres
