No no no no no! what I mean is why have the "M" button in the first place? Why would you want it not to be an M5 at any point when that is what you have bought. Why have the choice to make it semi skimmed instead of full cream?

what im kinda saying is that about 75% of the ppl that will by the M5 wont be able to handle that kind of power and also you wouldnt want all that power all the time too

(i must say at this point i did not see it last night as i was sleeping although will see it tuesday :o )

I was quite disappointed that they only got 6 turns out of a big roly-poly sierra estate.

That's a record that looks easy to beat with a furby.

My boss has the new M5... it's an amazing machine, but it sounds absolutely dreadful at idle. To get it singing, you need to be @4,000 rpm or more. The brakes are scary - you can feel all your body fluids rush forward when you smack the anchors.

From what I saw of the hot hatches, I too would vote for the golf.

An LSD would turn the VXR into an aR5e Focus, dreadful anywhere apart from super smooth tarmac!

weird, cos the people that own them and drive them every day say they are fine, even on dodgy cement "tracks"...

On the subject of hot hatches, I'd take the astra.

Only because it looks slightly unhinged, mind :)

I haven't driven one but going off all the road tests I've read about them says they try and snatch the wheel out of your hands and are awful on bumpy uneven roads!

Frickin' quick on a track though :)

The thing about the Astra is a typicall Vauxhall thing. The cars have a great engine, but rubbish chassi that can`t handle the power.

If i had to choose between the 3 they tested i would choose the Golf.

Ford aren't doing another RS - the ST will be the quickest Focus.

Vauxhall have always produced cracking engines and poor chassis - this is apparent right down to the 1.2 Corsas and up to the Elites.

Look at the old GTE - stonking engine, crap handling!

Aye those Red Top Valver units are summat else, Remember having a red mist moment with one in my old 8V MK2 Golf......It killed me on acceleration, but he tried to brake late for a R/A and the car tied itself in knots, nearly swapped ends  Think it scared the poo out of him 'cos he backed off after that :D

They also produced some corkers .... VX220 or Lotus Carlton anyone? ;) I guess it's down to the amount of involvement Lotus have in the mix!

LOL!

Just ordered a Renaultsport 5dr Megane with Cup chassis option.......bye bye Octy, hello Megane!

Don't suppose anyone has recorded this Top Gear as I totally missed the part with the VXR, Golf, Megane test in it? Will sort out any postage costs etc if you can help.

Cheers

Hugh

Very true. I'd love a Lotus Carlton - proper sleeper car

it should be repeated tonight at some stage.

Hi Fabia 12V,

Thanks for the info, just checked today's paper and it is indeed on tonight at 7pm.

Cheers

while it is true that the reviews say that the torque steer is a nightmare on the road' date=' the people that drive them day in day out say that to get any significant torquesteer you have to be [b']absolutely[/b] hammering it and be on a rough road! Otherwise it handles superbly.

heres hoping they will get the octy vRS and see how it performs :)

The press pics they showed of the new ST (have seen them before - have they been around for a bit) show the car in a pretty wild tangerine colour IIRC?

Is that going to be an available option? And are there any takers for it out there?

Guess the above post needed some pics!

Sorry if I'm going a bit off topic!

Its not like furby's/octavias have the best handling in the world.

I'd have the vauxhall for once :)

I actually really liked the VXR on TG - 2 seconds round the track quicker than the Golf so can't handle that badly!! Just that the limit is easier to find!!

I revert back to my Golf review I did and say it's not all that :thumbdwn:

Edit: Also it was above the Noble on the laptimes if you paid attention!

Yup - Golfs have become very bland - at least the Astra has that excitement that it might bite back - a challenge for the driver rather than a dull German shopping car with red badges on. Couldn't bring myself to contemplate one of those awful looking French beggars though :thumbdwn:

the megane was also quicker than the golf but very slightly slower than the VXR round the track... i was hoping they'd use the trophy for the megane as they did as the standard 225 is a bit pants by all accounts. according to EVO mag the
