low fuel light

Featured Replies

Today I drove my 2.0l diesel for 7 miles with the range reading zero. I don't like doing it one little bit but I also hate overpaying for fuel. So Tescos beckoned.

I just managed to squeeze 45 litres in so that means there was 5 litres left presumably.

But would the fuel pick-up pick it up is the $64,000 question......

You will have a fair bit left, we used to play fuel roulette between three VAG cars at work, an A4, Seat Toledo and my Passat, I drove from Keele services to St Helens on 0 miles on the fuel range, a distance of 60ish miles, I pumped 62 litres into a 60 litre tank. No sign of missing or spluttering for lack of fuel either so I would say yes, the pick-up would pick up most of the fuel.

Did you watch Top Gear when he drove the diesel A8 from London to Edinburgh and back? They had a camera in the fuel tank that showed all the fuel had gone but the car was still driving for the last few miles, I guess there is a lot of fuel in the system.

When my 2L shows 0 miles the fill is pretty spit on at 50 L.

You drove for 7 miles to find a tescos petrol station, as you said to save money. So you've done an extra 14 miles, so you are actually out of pocket now by driving to tescos. The 2/4p a ltr you would have saved is well lost in the extra miles plus the extra wear and tear.

only if it was out of the way.  Maybe the servo was on the way to wherever he was going?

Recently went 20 miles beyond zero and then put 48.16 litres in, having tried pretty hard to get as much in as possible.  That made a record 637 miles out of a tank and a true 60.1mpg.

It's not just the fuel in the tank theres all the fuel in the lines. In NASCAR they limited the sizes of the tanks to increase the number of pitstops per race and they were building race cars with wide long fuel lines holding gallons

Yeah you guys are right. I haven't taken mine down to 0 miles range but the last time I filled up the light came on showing 40 miles range left. I only managed 41 litres in the tank to the brim. £45 ish! Got over 500 range out of that.

£54 sorry! Fuel isn't that cheap

Jumped right in with my size 11's. just had another read over the op post. Looks like I misread it ooop's.

No offence taken meta55b (curious moniker) I had deliberately avoided getting fuel earlier because I knew I was going past a particularly cheap tesco fuel station on my way to a job.

By the looks of things I didn't need to have driven with my heart in my mouth.

I shan't make a habit of it all the same.

The manual states there is a 7litre 'reserve', now i've always taken that as when the light comes on there's 7litres left which was the case on my mkII and previous other brands.  I've found in my mkIII that even though as soon as the light comes on when the needle hits the red it shows 40miles range left this is way off, i've ran mine right down to the bottom of the red with only 10 miles range showing and only got around 43 litres in when filling it up.

So the way I see it when the gauge shows the tank is totally empty there's roughly 7litres left...... Thoughts?

Seems so since so many of you are getting the same figures. I'm pretty sure this is not by design though judging from what the manual states. Would be interesting to hear what Skoda has to say about it.

Would be nice if it can be adjusted with VCDS.

Another thing i've spotted is after filling up it doesn't take many miles for the gauge to start dropping whereas on my mkII the needle wouldn't budge from full until i'd done about 80 miles.

Also despite the tank being only 5 litres smaller on the mkIII the range on a full tank is 100miles less than my mkII aswell.

I've read about this before but can't remember where. In my old Mk1 (just sold it yesterday btw) it was the same - only after some 100km or so the gauge showed first signs of change. Which is very common in other cars as well anyway. I would certainly trade this for having the correct reading of the fuel left if this two things are connected in any way.

Got a few days till collection of my Mk3 and I'll be certainly paying attention to how much fuel will go in.

You need to check out the What Diesel thread, I have just binned off Tesco and started to use Shell and my average mpg has shot up, the jury's still out but early signs are that using Shell will add approx 50 miles per tank, which even allowing for the difference in cost should save approx £5 per fill up!

Just filled up today, the needle on the fuel gauge was right at the bottom of the red, I'd driven about 3 miles with the range showing '0' and it took 45.54 litres to fill it......

Obviously the first thing I had to do after picking up my car on Wednesday was fill up the tank. Range was showing zero and the petrol station was only 2 miles away so no problem. A total of 47.21 litres went in it. Will see how soon I'll get the zero range reading now...

My findings:

I was able to get 43.18 litres in with the range showing 60km. My consumption for that fuel-up was 7.8 l/100km which means the range was pretty accurate - another 20-30km would be possible with the range showing '0'.

The second time 43.3 litres went in with the range showing 75km. Consumption was 7l/100km so again another 20-30km would be possible with the range showing '0'. Also the low-fuel alert went off at around 100km left which is also consistent with the manual (7l reserve).

Looks like I have around 2 litres or 25km of 'safety reserve' left. Fine by me.

Cars going to Slovenia seem to be built very different to those for the UK! We seem to have a much larger safety reserve over here. Like Neil, id be looking probably just over 5 litres when the gauge read zero. I got 42 litres in the tank with the range showing 18miles i think it was. Gauge was reading halfway between the first and second short line.

That's because Slovenia is so small we have a gas station around every corner so no need for a bigger reserve

No seriously IMO it might just be different programing...

Could be.

I think you should all count yourselves lucky.

my wife has a citigo, and as soon as it hits 1 qtr, she makes me go and fill it up (as it takes me a few days of arguing).

no, I am not under the thumb, she just cant work out how to get the filler cap off..............

My wife can't cope with the range in double figures so never spends much over £40 to brim fill. It infuriates me cos I let the range fall to zero before filling up. Plus side is I rarely have to pay for diesel!

I filled up with the gauge showing empty and 0 miles on the display and put 47.67ltrs in.
