They are completely different so it depends what you want out of the car.

One is older, more economical, has a big thump of torque that makes it feel quicker than it is and just generally is fun to drive.

The other is less economical, newer, has linear power delivery so is quick but doesn't feel it and has a DSG gearbox you you don't have to waggle the gear stick about plus is better in the corners.

They are also significantly different in price.

A decent diesel mk1 is under £6k, where as a decent petrol mk2 is over £10k generally.

Do what I did and buy both lol

As the fox man says, it's like comparing apples and bananas

I loved my apple

Still love my banana :giggle:

Im going for the older diesel version as i need something in my price range and with good economy! I also like the look of them except for the seat covers.

Wouldnt touch a 1.4tsi with a barge pole

VAG still can't make them right

If you have shares in mobil 1 then go for it

I'm on my second 1.4tsi 62000 faultless miles so far :P

And my second engine was fine and had barely used a drop of additional oil after 22,000 miles, so they are not all bad.

Moved on to an Octy dirty diesel now though :bandit:

fancy PMing me a review of your new octy Jerry?

Tried that.

Bought one version several times and had a lot of fun in it.

Sold the other after 4 days. :D

How old/how many miles were on the first before it needed replacing?

It was just shy of 27,000 miles. The most annoying thing, or perhaps the best thing for me was that I had literally only had the car serviced the day the engine went pop, having burnt out a valve. Plus I had already had an oil consumption done which resulted in a figure of 482 mls per 600 miles some 10 months earlier and I recorded all my oil additions. That first engine consumed over 12 litres of additional oil between services, the majority of which was between 10,000 miles and the time it failed.

Probably all from the CIA or GCHQ warning him. Again :giggle:

Didn't he get a few from Mossad last time as well? :bandit:

I've never driven a MkII as I prefer diesel but, the slug of torque you get from a diesel with a manual gearbox is quite addictive. I've alway preferred torque to power/ top speed though.

I'd suggest the second one, Dave :D

Why would they need so many pictures of cats?

Why would they need so many pictures of cats?

they did have a stray that needed a home so maybe they were searching for decats

Mk1 all day long.

Economical, nippy enough for normal public highway use, reliable, proper gearbox that you actually have to use manually, and look great (IMO)

Cheap to buy now IF you can find a standard unmolested one. Even high mileage wouldn't put me off providing it's been serviced properly.

Not may like that now though sadly.

Why would they need so many pictures of cats?

my cats have thumbs, the danger is unappreciated......
