Skoda Rapid's

Featured Replies

Anyone here owned one? If so what are they like? Wouldnt mind one. Were the old skodas poorly built as offen said?

mid enginered and rear wheel drive, the best combination!

There was a purple one with centre line spilt rims years ago in max power with a intergrale hf engine with nos, anyone remember?

My brother in law had one. White with a red stripe. You couldn't hear yourself thinking sitting in the back :D.

I remember pics of white ones with bodykits. Real beauty's yeah! Do they come with a back box for the exhaust as i remember someone saying there is a vent in the rear side of the car.

John Stopani has 2, one of which has a turbo conversion :D

I think Rapids are rear engined i.e. engine behind rear axle as opposed mid engined when it's infront (or above?), like Porker 911.

Doesn't Big K have one as well?

I think he does, I also think its not entirely standard.

Big K, is yours road legal? (I have a cunning plan if it is ;) )

Skodas have always been well engineered, if not made with the same design emphasis as others. Problems came about through service schedules not being kept by the skinflints who bought them... :D

My problem when I've searched for a Rapid (and you might find this too), is that for the sort of insurance cost I will be quoted on any car, it is only really cost effective to insure a car that's actually worth something...

Rob.

Hi DayTripper,

I rallied a GrpA 130LE saloon for a short while - it was my last rally car!

The engine is very prone to failure from over revving (as I found out to my cost!) due to using a wet liner for the cylinder bores and the handling being rear engined is interesting!

is this John a member on here? is the turbo a factory option?

What was the spec of the rally car? Was rallying the skoda an expensive hobby? If i had the money I wouldnt mind having ago, like talbot sunbeams too.

Yeah, John's username is stopanij.

There are a few "rally" versions kicking about on the web somewhere....can't remember where I saw them, but they were about

If youre looking at rallying a Skoda (specifically) then they rallied the Estelles and Rapids, the favorit and the felicia up until recently and obviously the fabia atm.

A friend of mine has a bright pink with spots Estelle, lovingly called Ermintrude! Try the Team Bouncing Czech website at http://freespace.virgin.net/skoda.chap/tbc/tbc.htm for rallying skodas.

My dealer has a Favorit that hes repreparing to rally again - nice solid shell and needs finishing. I keep trying to get him to allow the customers to drive it! (ie me!).

Paul..

Andy Corner has 4 or 5 of them!

This one has a 1600 Ford X-flow in it, it certainly goes well we won our class on the Heart of England Stage Championship in 2000, in Jersey and got 3rd in class on that year's Dukeries too :D {It's not as quick as the 205 though......}

"jimspeed" in ludlow runs one too ~ can't remeber his full name

Also when was the last time skoda won the wrx and what car was it with?

was the rapid successful at ralling?

Erik do you have a genuine rally spec 6r4? or is it a converted mg metro turbo. Arent the rally spec ones worth around

Yey its my car

The turbo charged 136 Skoda Rapid 1989 I have was not a Skoda or dealer ship option but was being considered as one. It was converted from new for a freind of mine through a main Skoda Dealership by Sword conversions in Somerset, They did a few cars as well as a Turbo charged Favorit. There was a couple of Turbo conversion companies at the time the other being based in Skotland who lowered the compresssion by a thick head gasket plate. Sword lowered the compression by machining the piston crowns the conversion is carried out using a Garret t2 turbo charger and Solex carburation based on the Renalt 5 GT Turbo, the conversion added adjustable shocks and shortened springs with additional cooling fro the front discs, cooling vents were added in the rear side wings as well as a oil coler and intercooler. The car was been on BBC's top gear and in one of the popualr car mags a few years ago.

Skoda UK did sell a 130 and I think 136 Rapid/Estelle sport as well as a Cabriole version, converted by a UK company but could be bouught at UK dealers were great cars in there day.

I remember the soft top rapids.

What are the performance specs of the turbo rapid?

is the engine a 1.3? are there are good sites about these cars?

The 6R4 is a genuine ex-works car with a 2.8ltr n/a engine.

Yep it's worth about 40-45k, if it was the 2.5 it'd be worth about

  • Author

How fast is it??? How come the 2.5 is worth more? Rarer? How many were produced and are there werent any road versions like the rs200 did?

Do you have any wallpaper size pics?

Approximately 200 were produced, although production figures are rather different to sales figures

The 2.5s have around 70bhp more and rev to 11k or more, that's why they're worth more. They don't have as much torque though so on some venues the 2.8 is a better option.

There were road versions built, there was one for sale last week in MN but they are still going to be a horrible road car. Don't forget the engine is seperated from the cabin by a thin wall of perspex {it gets very, very hot in there!} and the steering lock is pants on a good day {hence lots of front end damage at a hairpin last weekend :mad: }

I haven't got any wallpaper sorted out yet but I'll have a look at doing some.

There are a few more engine sizes floating about including a few bi-turbos but they're not rally legal, I'm seeing 3 customers who interested in getting rid of their Evos and getting 6R4s, the only draw back is that they are sooooo specialised there's a very limited amount of companies who supply parts. An engine re-build needs booking months (no joke) beforehand....

They're f00king quick though :D 0-60 is geared for around 3 seconds!!!! Top speed of the 2.8 isn't that good, 120 the 2.5s with the right gearing will go a lot quicker {at venues like MIRA etc they'll be on the limiter at tht speed :eek:}

If you get the chance come along to the TAL Stages there are 4 or 5 Metros out, if not I'll let you know when the next 'gathering' is.

  • Author

Do you know the spec of the road versions?

Do you remember the Tickford metro?

Whats your personal preference, evo's or the 6r4?

What or where are the tal stages?

How did the 6r4 fair tup to the t16's?

I cant seem to find any info about the road versions 6r4 on the net, anyone know of any sites?

I'm off to Jordan today to look after 3 Evos so when I get back I'll tell you wjat I really think ;) To be fair on fast straights and flowing corners a 6R4 is the business, on twisty and bumpy stages they're evil! Ironically the 6R4 is going to be sold and replaced by an Evo ~ you can do International events in an Evo.....

T16s, Delta S4s and Audi Q S1s were a lot better than the Metro but you can only use Metros now so I guess in the battle for survival the Metro won :D

I've got a bit of info on the road car that I'll post after my return. Don't know anything about the Tickford Metro.

TAL Stages are on the 13th September near Stafford.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I'm back!

The Evos from Jordan are quicker than the 6R4! They were full WRC spec with no restrictor :D :D :D our main customer is also running a 2.3ltr engine kit which gives power galore (there's no local rolling road so he has no idea how much it has.....)

  • 6 months later...

OK. The Skoda Estelle ended (in the UK, although some countries got 135 spec injected low comp all allloy units in Skoda 135Li form) with the 130 iron headed 5 port engine. The 130LR was the group B estelle that produced approx 130BHP, and was stripped of every ounce of extra weight. I featured a special 8 port iron head, twin dellorto or Weber (can't remember which) sidedraught carbs, a special long silencer wrap arround exhaust, raised compression and and lots of engine lightening and ballancing to rev through to about 8-9k, although power didn't eally start until about 4-5k. It also had rear disk brakes instead of the the more normal huge drums, using a modified set of the normal 130 spec front 4 pot calipers, with a hydaulic handbrake with Magnesium wheels. The 130LR was based on the 130GL rather than the 130LSE, which was hand assembled at the same production facility, instead of the production line that made the others. Most 130GL's came with a vinyl roof, so it can be hard to find a plain metal one to replica from.

The Rapid line was never officially rallied, it had the same 120 and 130 engine as the Estelle (Uk only name actually) plus the 135 (low comp) and 136 (high comp) alloy headed 8 port units with either carb or bendix fi which didn't work very well. 130 Estelle and 130 and better rapids all featured semi trailing arm instead of swing axle suspension at the back. the 135 and 136 engines bolt easily into the Estelle, and you can use Favorit engines or even if you wanted to, felicia, or 8v fabia engines. the best trick is an early but solid Favorit 136, with a felicia MPi head with a custom made Rapid intake manifold and twin sidedraughts, or 4 keihin or similar bike carbs. The 8 ports alloy heads also featured intake manifold warming as well through a water channel in the manifold.

Brakes on the 120 models was 2 pot calipers with large rear drums, while the 130 and better models got 4 pots up front with drums to the rear, in Czech you can get a rear disk conversion that uses a split caliper for a cable hand-brake.

This is what you get if you do a little research.

I want to drive a rapid to siberia! Would it make it???

Easily if the engine and mechanics have been kept in good nick.

Have a look at www.southcoastskoda.com

and http://www.skoda-owners-club.co.uk

The South Coast guys organise a run every year to CZ most people go in rear engined Skodas of one kind or another, with maybe the odd Favvy as a parts hauler for bringing back cheap parts.

Tue Pol Halverson from Denmark on the Skodalovers mailing list spends most of the year touring all over central and southern Europe in in his S110, with atleast 1 stop in CZ to get his regular garage to do any of the little jobs that need looking at, either on his way out, or on his way back to denmark.
