Excited, enjoyed, endured, disappointed

After 31K the Yeti had to go. 4wd 2.0Tdi SE. Conceptually and practically a great car. Ultimately our experience of the car, the franchise dealership (even after it changed hands) and bits that broke - both fundamental and more cosmetic - have been far too much for a carefully looked after machine. Problems have been:

  1. Paintwork chips+++ and a bit of rust within 12 months (fight++ with dealer and SUK to get fixed
  2. (L) rear window mechanism failed (window stuck in down position; fixed after three visits to garage
  3. ® rear window mechanism failed (window stuck in down position; fixed after two visits to garage)
  4. Air conditioning matrix broke (actually fixed without fuss this time)
  5. ® rear coil spring failed whilst car parked! (warranty fix)
  6. On first MoT: ® rear drive shaft defect: "wear and tear", and explains where increasing and intractable shake at 60-65mph came from despite three wheel rebalances. Defect is integral / not due to part available separately. Photos from non-SUK franchise to and from SUK agreed with this as needing a new shaft, that the front ® is developing similar problem, and shaft alone is £1k!!! SUK also not prepared to do anything to help with fix as car one week outwith 36 month warranty. Franchise garage wanted to examine separately at cost of £86, which they would not shift on.

That was enough for us. I have never had such bad experience with a car from new or with a manufacturer. Despite its many plusses there have been too many key minuses. i would never recommend Skoda to a friend, and to all Yeti owners I'd suggest looking a bit past the hype. If you look at past owner's experience there is a developing trend of those who have had similar poor experiences. Good luck.

I am not questioning Northerner's story at all

With that made absolutely clear, could someone explain why he is credited with (currently) nine posts - but none are recorded in his profile?   I'm sure there's a perfectly simple explanation

What concerns me is the breadth of problems being reported on this forum although could be being over sensitive as problems will get reported.

I think Skoda dealers need to raise their game as product knowledge and attitude when approached with a problem is not their strong point in my experience.

Have mixed feelings about Skoda UK as again knowledge a bit shaky but polite and responsive but not

with the answer you are looking for.

All in all a 'put off' first Skoda customer.

Unheard of a Northerner who can't spell Northe(  r )n (LOL)!!

Kitten and I have owned Ivor for over three years, and have experienced NO major complaints/issues/problems whatsoever.

We have only had TWO VERY minor issues.

The internet headlamp switch had not been fitted correctly, and our rear Skoda badge suffered from the 'white worm' issue.  Both items were rectified under warranty.  :)

Appart from that he's been faultless.

The internet headlamp switch had not been fitted correctly...

I want one of those - presumably an aftermarket item fitted by the dealer? Could you post a link please? The Internet of Things is making progress more quickly than I imagined.

Its a typo error, I MEANT to say internal.  DOH!!!!

You can buy a car that's won every award, vote for reliability etc in the world and still be unlucky enough to get a duff one.  The key issue is how the dealer/manufacturer deals with it.  I think the OP should be prepared to name the dealer.

Not a major list really, not that I had that many problems with our old Octavia after 9 years and 145,000 miles. Had the dealer sorted without fuss, I would imagine the perception would be different.

The previous dealer I used went from great to poor after a service department staff member left. It's surprising how much difference one person can make (David Willis, you were star).

So there must be another 7 posts or topics around.

  1. Paintwork chips+++ and a bit of rust within 12 months (fight++ with dealer and SUK to get fixed HAPPENS TO LOTS OF CARS, NOT JUST SKODA.
  2. (L) rear window mechanism failed (window stuck in down position; fixed after three visits to garage POOR RESPONSE FROM DEALER, BUT ALSO ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS OTHERS, ESPECIALLY LAND ROVER FREELANDERS!
  3. ® rear window mechanism failed (window stuck in down position; fixed after two visits to garage) SEE ABOVE
  4. Air conditioning matrix broke (actually fixed without fuss this time) APPEARS TO BE A RARE FAILURE, BUT WE HAVEN'T BEEN TOLD WHY IT BROKE.
  5. ® rear coil spring failed whilst car parked! (warranty fix) VERY UNUSUAL AND NOT HEARD OF BEFORE
  6. On first MoT: ® rear drive shaft defect: "wear and tear", and explains where increasing and intractable shake at 60-65mph came from despite three wheel rebalances. ANOTHER VERY UNUSUAL FAULT AND ONE THAT I HAVE NEVER SEEN REPORTED IN ANY OF THE FORUMS

And to balance it all, I've now done 72k miles with no major problems, and I do now have a very good dealer, Sinclair Skoda in Swansea.

I think the only warranty items have been:

New DRL bulb

Foils fitted to rear doors and door resprayed

2 rear badges

1 front badge

1 headlightwasher unit, slight leak found.

Other than that it has just been servicing, tyres and new rear discs.

Thanks for that.  The answer, it appears, is that we haven't heard from our fellow Yetist for quite a while.  A Profile search gives this:

And sorry, I mis-spelled his name.

Drive shaft issues I can concur with but not on the Yeti. My previous Golf V 4motion ate two main prop shafts in my ownership; they went out of balance and caused vibration particularly in sixth gear.

However typical of most dealers these days, they fixed the symptom but didn't look for the cause, hence why two shafts failed.

Sold the car to a VW dealer to fund buying the first Yeti, so I've no idea if it wrecked any more prop shafts but it wouldn't surprise me if it did.

TP

Graham seeing RED again!!

And?

And?

I think Kibby was merely making a lighthearted jest at your red highlighted responses to an earlier post...no need for a sharp retort I feel.

sorry the OP has had such a poor experience but inevitable there will be the odd Friday afternoon car in any make - I came to Skoda from a Volvo, bought at 18 months from a franchised dealer, all the right stamps in the book etc. Went to Volvo based on a perceived reputation for reliability and safety. It was a nightmare and I don't think ever spent more than two months out of the garage. When you are on first name terms with the technicians you know too much time is being spent at the dealers!! After a few limp homes at around 5mph (no, not a typo) the final straw was a dual mass flywheel being replaced (and finding that repair still didn't stop the vibration).

Sorry!

Stood in the "No Beer" corner.

Yes lighthearted Graham...Sorry....

Car gave me absolutely no problems whilst in warranty, but now three and a half years old and have had a rear coil spring failure and a replacement engine due to timing chain stretching. Am beginning to wonder whether car components know when warranty time is up. I still love my car but ..............

Who paid for that then?

Who paid for that then?

Skoda paid 50% for the coil spring and 70% for the engine replacement. I am still demanding more towards the engine and hope to hear more favourable news tomorrow from Skoda.

Well, I have no idea.  Presumably from deleted threads, but then as a mod, I thought I'd be able to find them still.

Unlucky or you have not looked after your Yeti?

102k miles and only had new badges and a heated seat pad, what have you been doing with your Yeti?

As for paint chips, I have lots as I did on the BMW, Audi, VW and Mitsubishi before that. I will also say SUK have been more than helpful with the issues we have had with the Fabia.

Me thinks unlucky! Regularly serviced, driven carefully, and just about to get to 40000 miles.

Is it possible that editing a post can add to your post count? On the basis that each time you edit you are submitting a post.

Edit to test...

Nope, that doesn't do it.

I give up and going back to my beer.
