Frustrating Starting issues

Featured Replies

If I use my Superb daily it starts fine , don't use for four days or so not enough power to start, Skoda uk / Rac checked it twice no problems found , no drain on battery, My local dealer had it for twenty four hours all good no drain on battery, local battery company checked all good, had not used the car this week for four days would not start ,going back to dealer on Monday. In term of usage in winter it is the same as my previous Octavia, never had a problem, if their is a drain on the battery any ideas as to why it cannot be traced ? very frustrating had four Skoda's first issue of this kind.

As someone (post 20, I think) said, the test instrument isn't that accurate.   When mine was passing/failing tests earlier in the week, the open circuit terminal voltage was 11.9v (it wouldn't hold

Probably needs a new battery. Skoda often use batteries that aren't really man enough for the job, for instance the battery on my Octy TDi has 360CCA whilst my mates Mondeo diesel with same size engine is 780CCA - big difference for what is basically a very similar car. I have heard of batteries on diesel Octy's giving up in under 3 years.

I would be more than happy to buy a new battery if it would solve the issues, but after every four electrical tests have been completed am assured that the battery is ok , The dealer is reluctant to tell me to fit a new battery as if it is a discharge problem and the new battery acts in the way apx one hundred pounds would be wasted . I will see what they suggest on Monday.

Buy a new battery - I had exactly the same problems with my Superb a month ago and took it to a local garage for the battery to be checked on their conditioning machine, which suggested all was OK. Two days later the battery was dead again so I bought a new Bosch 77ah battery and all is well now, with the car starting much better than it has done for ages despite the cold weather at the moment.

Thanks when the battery was checked Tuesday they said it was 68% charged I am sure the RAC mechanic said it was 68% could be a clue.

Try using a ctek charger on your existing battery. It will desulphurise, and gently charge the battery up to max level - something that is difficult for the car to do using alternator alone. If you choose the right ctek charger it will also test and tell you if your battery is able to hold its charge.

If you find that you do need a new battery, then as others have said above: it's all about the CCA.

dealer has refused to change my battery which refuses a charge above 12.1v though their equipment measured it at 12.45 straight after two hours of charging.lol

as if 12.45 is acceptable for a full charge.

battery is factory fitted and just one year old.

new battery will cure your problems and its up to you if you want to complain to skoda uk.

you need to get your own multi-meter to check the voltage on your battery as anything below 12,4v will mean it's failing to charge properly, a good battery should be reading betweeen 12.5-12.7v at rest.

your car will probably be fine after a run and just charging above 12.4v so everything looks fine even after the night after but give it a few days it will drop below 12.4v hence your difficulty to start.

had a similar problem with a old vw tdi, changed temp sensor, glow plugs and still didn't solve the problem and then did checked the battery and discovered it was just charging over 12.4v.  Replaced the battery and stared up first time.

Hi, I have had the same problem with my battery. It was replaced under warranty. Having a chat with them they have had a few superbs with the same issue. And the new battery is a higher ampage output to the old one.

Same problem about February (Superb Estate 170 DSG Elegance). Went through all the battery tests at local dealer. They said battery checked out ok, but when I left car with them for 2 days it had to be jump started when I went to collect it. Went to Halfords to get a Bosch battery and the tech. there tested my battery and found it to be at 52% capacity despite me having just driven there from dealers (20 miles, 30 min). Took new bosch battery back to the dealers, showed them the reading from Halfords and got them to fit the new battery for me.

They couldnt pay for the battery as it was a non Skoda item, but replaced dsg oil a couple of months later free of charge instead.

New battery was without a doubt the answer! My Superb starts better and easier than it has ever did. Convinced that the standard battery is just not up to the job and doesn't last!

Battery I fitted was Bosch S5 096. Exactly same size. Mine came from Halfords but I believe can be got cheaper elsewhere.

I had similar issues on my Octavia mk2 with the battery. I had cold cranking issues and odd electrical gremlins.

Replaced with a Bosch S5 (with 5yr warranty) at the largest Ah I could get in the engine bay (74 or 78Ah) and it cranked first time every time there after

Think this post's talked me into checking my battery too. 2012 combi, mornings colder than 3-4deg, let glow plug light go out and it takes a couple of laboured cranks to fire up. Reminds me of a knackered old fiesta I once had.

Been in the dealers again have said do not use my Nova Picasso camera detector as they think it is a drain on Battery so it is unplugged, I told them I am investing in a new battery , they insist it is not the battery so don't buy one , if it does not start again I will get a Battery ,if the new one drains in 3/4 days car not being started I will know it is not the Battery, expensive away to find out if Rac/ dealer/ Ats are wrong and it is the Battery.

Just had Skoda assist out to a flat battery. Guy said battery absolutely dead, said it's either a duff battery or one of the convenience modules isn't switching off properly and continuing to drain charge once the car's off. Its only done short journeys for the last week or so the RAC guy said its unlikely to be a long term drain down because he'd still get a bit of residual charge. Just in time for the damn Christmas holidays too :-(

Big long drive yesterday and all seems well, fires up instantly. Need to get the wife to start walking the 3 miles to her work instead of taking the car! ;-)

Had to jump start mine this morning. Third time in 20 months of ownership. Always in winter and after a few short trips but still unexpected based on previous cars and usage patterns. I think this thread compounds my suspicions. After three occasions of deep discharge it's probably done some damage.

Be interesting if you have your battery checked and every thing came back 100% .

Will do. I've got a few minor things I want the dealer to look at (phantom seats, white worm badges, etc) so I'll be arranging to take it in in the new year. But I've also just ordered a CTEK MXS 5.0 and cigarette socket adapter, so I'll hold off running the recon cycle before Skoda have tested it.

After a very boring Xmas day at the mother-in-law's, I thought I'd share a summary of some of my learnings gleaned on batteries. The caveat being that anything you read on the internet is only worth what you've paid for it (this info was all free) and I've been drinking since 10.30am to ease the pain.

Firstly - there are several ways that you can test a battery's CCA and capacity but garages and battery specialists mostly can only test CCA to an accuracy of 70% and there's no reliable way to measure capacity without sending it to a lab, you can only really get an estimate using resistance. Therefore whatever load test a dealer/RAC can do is fairly unreliable. A battery can show a good CCA but actually have a poor capacity.

Second - sticking with CCA tests, the results rely on the technician punching the correct battery CCA into the test equipment (i.e. 600 CCA), therefore an unscrupulous auto-technician could plug in 900 CCA, test your battery in front of you and then show you a readout of 33% and recommend they sell you a new battery.

Third - there is a lot of scientists that don't think that desulphation can be fixed using pulse charging or chemical addicitves. Too complex and lengthy to do either 'for' or 'against' justice here, but lots of patents, court cases, advertising guidelines means that it's a really grey area. In retrospect, I note that CTEK word their claims carefully (though I'm happy that the one I've ordered remains an excellent all-round charger regardless).

Fourth - here's a really clear youtube guide to finding parasitic current drain. Some of it obvious plus some really good tips for the layman. There are lots of others but this seems to cover all the points very well.

Hope that helps any others going stir crazy with boredom or battery problems.

P.S. Merry Christmas

Update - long drive on Sunday and mostly short drives since. Started fine Sunday night and Monday, bit more sluggish on Tuesday but barely fired up thus morning, really labouring, took 4-5 cranks to get it going. Really cheesed off.

Also noticed that by coincidence, quite a few of the new topics over the last 6 months seem to happen to me shortly after so if we can start an "I've won the lottery" thread, just in case, I'd be grateful!

Merry Christmas. Chris.

hi,

I have just changed my battery to a tungstone (all I could get locally, today). Everything went ok as in all of the lights went off as a member described above, with the exemption of the yellow engine management light. I took it for a quick run and each light went off as expected as each item reset it self and I opened and closed the windows to reset them, but the yellow management light stays on.

Any idea's??

Have a ordered a Bosch S5 Battery 096 5 Year Guarantee after once again unable to start this morning in spite of continually being told that I do not need a new battery I really feel I have no option, dealer will fit , I have Skoda UK warranty the battery is not covered . Hoping my problems are battery !!!!

I thought the Skoda warranty includes the main battery, but not those in the keys or alarm which are listed in the exclusions. Is the real issue that the dealer claims the battery is ok?

Can't you leave the car over a frosty night with them, after making some short journeys? Then they might get the picture, after all you have bought the premium model.
