Front assist... has it ever intervened?

Featured Replies

unfortunately it doesnt work on stationary objects so youll have lots of smashed poly!

Video evidence and Nick295 would prove otherwise....

It definitely does work well. I was driving down a street at 30 mph behind a white van with about 2 car lengths gap. A nice Ferrari went by and I followed it passing me in my side mirrors. It must have been a 2 second glance. The white van broke suddenly just as I had taken my eyes off the road ahead.

Before I knew what happened, a loud beep, big red car on the colour Maxidot and the car slammed on the anchors to a complete stop. I nearly sheeet myself. It stopped about 1 car length away from the white van.

Obviously all blame lies with me and taught me a  lesson - but Front Assist saved my bacon from a front end collision at 30mph. I owe the person that wrote the code for that technology a beer.

Did you ever see the video from Volvo when they put on a live "test" of their system infront of the press?

The Volvo ended up underneath a lorry....

Ah, some of you may laugh but at least the emergency windscreen wipers kicked in. who's laughing now eh! eh? :giggle:

No it won't actually. The system in that Up! (the one from the sister company) is different to what's available for the Octavia (lasers vs radar).

I tried testing it in real traffic against other cars already stopped at traffic lights and I got no warnings at all. So far, I've only got warnings against moving targets.

but thats a Citygo and as TudorM says is it the same system as in the Octy 3?  Ive never seen City Safe mentioned in any of the Octy literature whereas its plastered over the Citigo safety section on Skoda-auto.com

This was the vid that got me thinking of you having broken polystyrene.. its an audi at 20mph so may not be relevant as its 1 mph over but you get the jist

Bit more of an explanation form Thacham.

Near me there is a road that is downhill, bends and the road changes from one lane to two for the roundabout at the end. Often when (I am running late) I approach the roundabout and there will be a stopped car in the outer lane and I get the red warning sign as the car picks up the stopped car and then I move away into the empty lane.

The big thing (thankfully) about this technology (as said to Tiff Needell) the system brakes a lot later than an observant human has learnt to brake.

So this is now not available on the Octavia?

It never was. The Citigo uses lasers by the rear view mirror, the Octavia uses a radar in the bumper.

You can tell it's not the same system, as Tiff Needel says that it only works up to 19 mph, while the Octavia one works up to motorway speeds.

Sponsored by Asda maybe...

I had an interesting experience with it. Coming from so way back of the end of a queue of slow moving traffic I pulled out to overtake. As I did so, the Renault Clio in front of me must have seen me coming and instantly lifted off for no apparent reason. This had the effect of giving me a "brake test" as though the driver of the Clio wanted me to know that he disapproved of my overtaking (some drivers do for reasons I can't fathom). The red icon flashed up and the brakes came on mercifully briefly but completely unexpectedly. Bet the designers of the program hadn't thought of that scenario... Got past several cars though.

By the way, have you ever wondered why, when at the end of a queue of slow moving traffic behind say a tractor or, more usually a horse box, the car immediately behind the slow mover doesn't overtake so those of us further behind might get a chance too?

It baffles me. In the same way as why, when you're following a slower car at night, the driver in front doesnt put their high beams on? (So you cannot see any distance in front).

I've tried the intelligent (er, no...) light assist and given up with it. It's too dim-witted for words.

Have you tried switching it from late or medium to early in the settings?

Agree its not all that hot at picking up cars in front a way off or cars on a bend but it does seem to sharpen up its responses and makes it a bit more usable.

not sure id it actually makes the light sensor itself more sensitive as a consequence though.
