Quick headlight question

Featured Replies

Hi all

I just have a quick question about the low beam on the FL octavia.

I was messing around with VCDS and a new headlight switch today to try and activate automatic lights, but now I've noticed that the sidelights come on when I select low beam. I haven't really given the headlights too much attention before but I don't think the sidelights came on with the low beam before.
If anyone could let me know if this is normal or not it would be much appreciated.

I would have thought that they'd be on with all the light variations.

Perfectly normal.

Side lights are always on with dipped headlights and main beam (excluding the flash function).

Btw... for automatic lights you also need to fit a new wire unless you already have it.

If all the pins have wires on the back of the switch then you're good to go. If not then you need to put one in going down to the central convenience unit.

Also a single repair wire is a bit short, you're better off getting two and joining them together, or splicing in an extra length of wire in the middle.

Thanks for all the information.

I did try to see if I had all the wires but I couldn't get the connector open.

I've tried pushing in the tab at the side (I think its meant to slide out when the tab is depressed) but this doesn't seem to help at all. Do you have any tips on how to open it?

Have you cut the zip tie off? The middle of the connector slides out sideways, I.e. at right angles to the wires.

Yep, I cut it off.
I haven't been using too much force in case I break one of the wires, but I have tried pulling it out whilst keeping the tab depressed.
Thanks for the advice, I'll try again tomorrow.

Can I ask where you got an auto light switch?

Did you have to buy a new one as I am struggle to find a used one.

I bought a cheap VW one from eBay to see it would work, but then I found this link on an old thread: http://skodateile.cz/index.php?pg=product∏=172&menu=%C5%A0koda|Octavia%20II(A5)|Sv%C4%9Btla%20a%20%C5%BE%C3%A1rovky&img_b=IMG_2517.JPG&album_adr=/album&album_start=0

If I can get mine to work, I'll probably buy a Skoda one from that link.

Oooh. Thanks for the link.

I didn't know you could get a Skoda one with "Auto" instead of the weird tunnel symbol.

From memory I thought you had to lift up the lug on the side then the inner part of the connector slides downwards. You may need to put a screwdriver in above the connection pins to prise the two bits apart.

Aren't the VW ones illuminated red rather than green?

Correct.

He did say if it worked then he would eventually buy a Skoda one.

Tempted to buy one myself if I could figure out how to register and buy from skodateile.cz! lol

Thanks for your help :)

I finally managed to get it open and I am indeed missing a wire from pin 2.

I would either buy two of the repair wires and splice together or extend one with a suitable length of wire. One repair wire is only just long enough.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well this thread inspired me to look for a switch again.

Got a Skoda tunnel light switch off ebay for £18.

Fitted the extra wire, enabled in VCDS and jobs a good 'un.
