V10 maps now freely available; got mine from here:  http://bit.ly/1hCRzSY  Loaded without a hitch, but - annoyingly - the map STILL has an open road near my brother's house as a dead-end.  Grrrrrr.

I installed a downloaded copy of V7 map a while back and the VW dealer which had just moved was back to there old premises even though on the V6 they were in the new location.

 

After that I only bought genuine maps

 

Even maps that show the correct number code were infact modified older maps

Can someone please remind me, is it the software which loads the languages, or the maps?

 

Someone messed with my Columbus at the weekend trying to find the secret menu, and ever since it has defaulted to German, and it won't load English  :(

Not quite - you must already own V10 maps legally to use these disks, as their terms clearly state...

Yeah, of COURSE I've got the original map; thank God I've now got this as a back-up.  Just a purely hypothetical query, though: what would happen if I DIDN'T have the original map?  Just asking because I've got a friend who bought one of these maps, and I SWEAR he hasn't got the original.  Will he go to jail, this friend of mine?

It is both. Language in firmware has to match the map.

If you stick to stock firmware and map you will always be safe.
