Cr overheating

Featured Replies

Hi,

recently purchased a Octavia 109000 on the clock, been looked after by previous owner, all services stamped & in very good condition. I bought this for long runs to and from work hoping i will get more miles. So far so good.

however first trip this morning -

Slowly the temp guage started to rise & hit the alarm. Pulled over and let it cool down as it was dark couldnt really see but managed to get to a garage and put water into header tank & carried on slowly. I had no more alarms but the guage bounced up & down throughout the whole trip.

Got to work -

  • Header tank empty so i filled up approx 4litres of coolant & is full. I understand may go down if trapped air.
  • Cant see any leaks under car or in the engine.
  • Oil is okay & hasnt mixed with coolant that i can see.
  • No funny smells or smoke coming from anywhere in the engine or exhaust i can see or smell.
  • When i unscrewed the header it hissed so i assume that it is pressurised.

I would like any ideas please. Or is it simply a case that the guy i bought it from didnt check this??? Windscreen fluid was also empty..

What engine?

Hi, its the 110bhp. I have spotted that it is leaking towards the back left side of the engine cover with drips. If that helps

back left of the engine cover.... the return pipe to the header/expansion tank?

Cheers for that. I am taking car back to garage to sort it out.

Is it an easy thing to find or could it be something else that leaks?? water pump?? Apologies if thats a silly question

when does it get hot? uphill? could be head gasket.

leaking water pump possibly

iirc it takes 4.5 litres to fill from empty so if youve put 4 litres in it must have only had 500ml of coolant in it.

now its full take it for a spin (up to temp) and then squeeze top and bottom rad  hoses, if they are pressurized it may suggest head gasket, if top is hot and bottom is cold may be water pump

I would like expect a leak from the water pump to come out at the bottom of the engine o. The drivers side. The water pump on the ASV engine sits just above and in front of the crank pulley, basically behind the air con compressor. Any leak around the pulley will be behind the timing belt cover.

I remember someone having a problem with the expansion vessel cracking at the back but coolant only leaked out when the system was under pressure.

Hi,

Seemed to gethot when on an incline. Filled coolant and drove home and everything okay until I went an incline and seems to cause temp to rise.

Stopped on inclined layby and could clearly see fluid dripping down from back left side as you look at car.i read a symptonof head gasket is smoke from exhaust and funny smells and mixed oild with coolant.??

Could you see where fluid was coming from? High or low on the engine?

With smells/smoke etc I think it's the case that you can get them rather than you will get them.

For smoke coolant needs to get into a cylinder. To get Oil in the coolant something has to connect the oil and coolant together

Culdnt see where leak was oming from but only where it was dripping from. I had a good look but couldn't see anything.

Only saw drips from underneqthdrivers side.

Had green flag tow me to garage. He said didn't think was a leak, thinks the fluidisawwas the overflow from header tank. thinks water wasn't working so hopefully it's that.

There have been a few TDi where the return pipe to the header tank has had a crack in causing it to leak.

Hi, Final reply...

Got my car back today after they said theyd repaired it. New water pump, new cam belt, new thermostat & system flushed. All tested with no issues.

However......driving back the temp again went up to reach the alarm again. So didnt appear to be fixed.

Reversed the deal & got my oldcar back as wasnt happy drivng the car.

Thanks for all peoples help & suggestions.
