Admit lure of the vRS is obvious but have you considered an Elegance 2.0 TDi?

The vRS crew will probably lynch me for saying it (I have a 2013 Mk2 vRS Blackline at the moment....but not for long) but the 2.0 TDi is barely any slower real world than the 184 vRS, there abput 10hp/tonne difference in power to weight as the vRS weighs alot more, its comfortable, v well equipped and will be cheaper i am sure.

The difference in weights between the 150 and 184 diesel Octavia's doesn't make much sense, especially when compared to other similar VW group cars:

Octavia hatch: 140kg difference

Octavia estate: 135kg difference

Seat Leon 5dr: 40kg difference

Audi A3 S/B: 10kg difference

No direct Golf comparison as the 184 is only in the GTD and there is no 150 version.

My guess is this is another Skoda marketing dept. error. In the same brochure it says that the vRS has 17" front disc brakes

Dont agree sorry.

The 184 lump is probably heavier (get the impression the two lumps differ a bit mechanically and its not just state of tune), as is the multilink suspension. Add in the different body kit, wheels, seats etc and it does make sense.

A 150 TDi Golf (which there is a derivative in UK SE and GT spec) weighs approx 1350kg vs an Octavia estates 1272 id bet mostly on account of the multilink rear setup....Octavia probably carries less sound proofing etc.

My current MK2 vRS weighs about 1420kg and the 150 TDi felt massively lighter.

Also the vRS does roughly speaking have 17" front brakes as it has the same rotors as on the Golf GT performance pack. The 312's originally fitted being 16's....i cant work out the mm to inch sizes in my head bit if they arent quite right its probably Skoda speak for "fits behind 16, 17" wheels" if i had to guess.

Yes, I see now that it's the suspension that accounts for virtually all of the variation in weight. The 150 Leon also gets the multi-link set-up whereas the Octavia doesn't and all A3's (I think) get the multilink rear suspension. That makes the Octavia the lightest of all 4 in 150 diesel format.

17" = 431.8 mm's and there's no way the discs are that diameter! 312 mm's = 12.28" diameter.

Absolutely, interestingly the Golf gets multilink from power outputs 140hp and higher, so the 1.4 TSi Golf also has multilink rears, its just the 1.2 TSi's and 1.6 TDi's that dont get it. Not sure if thats the same for the Leon, not sure at all about the A3.

Funny because the 1.4 TSi Octavia hatch in manual form doesnt even weigh 1200kgs.....basically its even lighter than a Fabia vRS estate despite its size, god knows how theyve achieved it with such a big car.

People have said the lack of multilink on the non vRS Octavias is a bit of a shame but for me I think it could almost be considered a good thing. The real world difference in handling characteristics between the two arent poles apart and in 1.4 TSi and 150 TDi form you get a car with MK2 vRS TDi levels of power to weight ratio; given the engine itself is better despite its lower output goes along way tp explain why its practically as fast on paper and in my opinion at least faster in practice.

Agree RE disc sizes and think its more about what size wheels fit over the calipers than actual rotor sizes, strange but the two do marry up.

On the A3, the 2.0 TDI 150 gets proper suspension.
